Fall makeup: Behind the Scenes

New York — Atlanta is in the house (errrr, tent)! Thanks to Jono of Jono Productions, I found a fellow Atlantan (okay, former Atlantan) in the Fashion Week crowd.

Travis Culberson of Decatur is a free-lance makeup artist working the Ellen Tracy show for Nars. Five years ago, he quit his job in finance with the dream of becoming a makeup artist. “My experience has been great,” he said, “I’ve been working fashion week for four years.”

Culberson has worked with makeup artists such as Pat McGrath, designers Michael Kors and Donna Karan, and several top models. “It’s always exciting when you see the girls who are in all the magazines,” Culberson said.

James Boehmer, the lead makeup artist for Nars, sent a very distinctive look down the runway at Ellen Tracy. The makeup had to be aggressive to stand up to the predominantly black collection, he said. The look?: “Strong eyes and strong lips, which is usually not what we do, but we are changing it today,” Boehmer said. It was an 80’s Robert Plant effect, but without the glossy red pout. Lips were matted red with Nars Forbidden Red Velvet Matte Lip Pencil.

Eyes got smoky shades of taupe and black from Nars Duo Cream Eyeshadow in Madagascar (in stores in April) and Pandora. Cheeks got a subtle shimmer with Nars, The Multiple in Copacabana.
