Old vs. new

NEW YORK - I don’t know that I’ve ever heard the term “Sporty Couture”, but that’s the word used to describe designs by REYES, that’s Jose Ramon Reyes, not Brian Reyes (designer of America Ferrera’s Golden Globe gown) as I and some others in attendance initially thought.

The show, held Sunday at Bumble and Bumble, a hair salon in New York, had some of the more colorful looks I’ve seen so far, such as a scuba sheath dress in electric blue or a very cool ultraviolet hooded track jacket that reminded me of the Izod Windbreakers I coveted nearly 20 years ago. I read later, that Reyes really was paying homage to sporty looks of the mid-eighties…

It was Reyes’ first runway show, and I think there is something to be said for new designers. I actually find myself looking forward to whatever they send down the runway, mainly because they are still able to take chances…

Do you like established or emerging designers? Who are some of your favorite newbies?
