Practice squad's Dahl gets shot with first-team offense

The Falcons have regularly switched personnel along the offensive lines throughout the offseason.

The latest change has come at right guard, where three-year practice squad regular Harvey Dahl is getting his turn with the first-team offense.

"I have no pre-conceived notions," offensive line coach Paul Boudreau said. "Right now guys are on a clean slate. Whether you were the coach's favorite before. Whether you weren't the coach's favorite. Whether you were on the practice squad I don't really care. My favorite guys are the guys who do everything right, do it on time and do it physically."

Longtime starting guard Kynan Forney has worked behind Dahl. Boudreau wants to pair the nasty-temperamented Dahl — who has had his share of offseason on-field dustups with teammates — alongside the even nastier Tyson Clabo, the right tackle.

"They're smart and they're tough and we'll see how the work together," Boudreau said.

Dahl, who spent two seasons on San Francisco's practice squad before being picked up by Atlanta last season, has mostly played tackle. Boudreau has moved just about every lineman — except center Todd McClure — to different positions to evaluate their physical and mental versatility.

Dahl is being tested at the moment.

Boudreau said everything could change once the pads come on in training camp, especially because of Forney's experience and the possible return of Todd Weiner, who could replace Clabo at right tackle. Everything that's been tinkered with this offseason could be for naught — or could result in something special, Boudreau said.

"We're really looking for the best five," Boudreau said. "We're looking for seven to dress on Sunday and 10 to keep on the roster.

"If you're in a situation and you get beat physically I can maybe help you from a technique standpoint. If you get beat mentally I can't help you and usually it's a blowup. The quarterback is getting carried off or the running back is getting blown up."

Baker being watched

While Dahl is getting his shot, first-round draft pick Sam Baker is under Boudreau's microscope. The left tackle, who could emerge as the starter, is adapting well, Boudreau said, but there remains a large unknown element to his game.

"He's going to be the guy who it's going to be interesting when he gets the pads on," Boudreau said. "I asked [defensive end] John Abraham not to let up on him and give him some stuff and give him some things he's never seen before. He's picking it up. He's still getting used to the pace [of how] we practice."

Hunley helps

Ricky Hunley, who recently was fired as the Cincinnati linebacker's coach, worked with Atlanta's linebackers for three OTA sessions this week. Hunley, a former NFL player, is good friends with Falcons' head coach Mike Smith. He is the latest former player Smith has allowed to help the team during offseason drills. Ex-Falcons Chuck Smith and Terance Mathis have also worked with players.

"Ricky played in this league and any time you can expose your guys to former players it's important," Smith said. "They got to know what it's like and someone like Ricky can give them some insight with a player's and coach's point of view because he's done both in this league."

Brooking fund-raiser

Linebacker Keith Brooking will be joined by running back Michael Turner, Smith and several other players and coaches at his annual tailgate fund-raiser Saturday at the Newnan-Coweta county Airport. Proceeds benefit the programs sponsored and supplemented by the Keith Brooking Children's foundation.

The tailgate party, which will include music and other entertainment, is for adults aged 21 or older and registration begins at 5 p.m. There will be an autograph session from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the door, online at keithbrookingfoundation.org or via phone at 770-683-4377.
