A day after his indictment on federal charges related to dogfighting, Michael Vick was getting little support in his home state of Virginia.

In Newport News, Vick's hometown, 74 percent of 354 respondents to a poll on the dailypress.com Web site predicted Vick would be suspended for at least part of the upcoming NFL season, while only 25.4 percent thought he would receive no suspension.

Do you think the media is blowing the Michael Vick case out of proportion?
  Yes. It's overkill.
No. I can't get enough of it.
It's still not to the Paris Hilton level.

Just across Hampton Roads, Virginian-Pilot columnist Bob Molinaro in Norfolk wrote, "Now that the indictment has been handed down, those of us who criticized Vick for his unprofessional demeanor and questionable conduct can be judged for what we are — not haters, but people who could see Vick's career and life dissolving into a series of incomplete passes."

Richmond Times-Dispatch columnist Bob Lipper began his Wednesday column with:

"He's done.

"Michael Vick's run as a megastar celebrity athlete officially ended yesterday. At best, his image has been battered beyond repair. At worst, he could be facing perp walks, orange jumpsuits and prison bars. Either way, he's essentially finished as an NFL poster child and cash cow. Either way, his razzle-dazzle time is over."

The Vick venom wasn't limited to his home state.

According to the "Sports Spotlight" blog on silive.com, the Staten Island Advance's Web site, "Nothing tugs at the heartstrings like an injured pooch, so 54 dogs having been found buried on property owned by Vick isn't going to put him in good stead with the heartland of America."

Sun-Sentinel.com blogger Ethan Skolnick, writing on the south Florida newspaper's Web site, said, "As my friends who own them know, I have little fondness for dogs. Yet, even I find the Michael Vick allegations vile."

According to ESPN.com columnist Lester Munson, "Vick is in real trouble. He is up against the might and majesty of the U.S. government with all of its agents, all of its investigative techniques, and all of its skilled prosecutors.

"If he has any doubts about the power and skill of the forces arrayed against him, he can call Scooter Libby, former chief of staff to Vice President Cheney, or he can call Lord Conrad Black, the disgraced media mogul now facing time in a federal penitentiary. If he still isn't convinced, he can call Jeff Skilling, the zillionaire Enron CEO who is now residing in a federal pen," Munson writes.

"All three thought they could explain their way out from under federal charges. And all three were convicted. Vick can, and probably will, hire some of America's best defense lawyers, but they will face a serious battle."
