Are we all April’s fools? Internet doubts viral giraffe is really pregnant

11:20 a.m. Saturday, April 1, 2017 National/World News

One giraffe in New York has turned into a viral sensation after a live stream of her pregnancy has attracted millions of viewers.

April, a giraffe at Animal Adventure Park in New York, is pregnant with her fourth calf. The 15-year-old giraffe was thought to have gotten pregnant in late 2015 with a 5-year-old male giraffe named Oliver. Giraffes have a 13-15 month gestation period, and zoo keepers have now said they must have been off slightly in their estimate on when April conceived.

Animal Adventure Park first published a live stream of April in her pen on February 10, saying they were anticipating a baby giraffe birth. At the time, the zoo said her estimated due date was anywhere between mid-January and mid-February.

Six weeks and millions of views later, April is not showing signs of labor, leading some people to speculate that the giraffe-mania is all just a ruse. Are we witnessing a giant April Fool’s Day prank in the making?

Disclaimer: Animal Adventure Park has maintained that April is pregnant. People still have jokes, though.

In Animal Adventure Park’s latest update on the giraffe, the zoo said April’s overnight behavior was “interesting” but that she appeared “relaxed.”
