What’s for dinner on Election Night?
History may require a long wait on Tuesday, so pass the time with fun and food
Thursday, October 30, 2008
Tuesday is promising to be a long day, whether you are standing in line waiting to vote or standing around waiting for the results to come in. Waiting always goes better with food. Here are some ideas for Election Night dining and snacking.

Feeling ambitious? While you wait, you might want to bake cookies. These political cookies with likenesses of Obama and McCain were made at Perfecto’s Caffe in Andover, Mass. Browse cookie recipes

For dessert: A red, white and blue parfait will hit the spot, plus add some patriotic color to your dinner table or Vote Watching party. Red White and Blue Parfait recipe

Food for your candidate
You might choose a menu that reminds you of the candidate you’re backing. For Barack Obama, how about a Midwestern chili, such as Turkey Chili or Cheesy Chili. For John McCain, maybe a Southwestern dish, such as Easy Enchiladas. For Joe Biden, you might choose an East Coast seafood dish like Potato Chip Crab Cakes. And for Sarah Palin, maybe something Alaskan, such as Grilled Maple Salmon.
Finger food
If you want something to nibble on, you can’t get more American than chicken wings. And with apologies to Chick-fil-A, you can, if you wish declare them either Right Wings or Left Wings, as you prefer. We’re partial to the Coca-Cola Glazed Wings ourselves.
Take yourself to a voting party
Whether your views run toward Blue or Red or Green, there are plenty of parties planned around town on Tuesday night. The AJC’s Social Butterfly, Jennifer Brett, has rounded up the best Election Night party spots (updated list as of Nov. 3). A watering hole in Mableton is offering red, white and blue martinis while you watch the returns.
Just desserts
We learned that the Ritz-Carlton Buckhead plans to offer dessert selections in a nonpartisan but partisan way for those who buy the Presidential Election package. Dessert selections for Democrats may include Hawaiian Ices, “Obama Brulee,” and Chicago Cupcakes; Delaware Diner Cake and Donkey cookies. “Republican” choices might include Arizona Punch, baked Alaska, Elephant cookies, and “Tax Free Chocolate Cake.” Or you can have your own dessert at home. May we suggest the Red White and Blue Parfait recipe?
State parties
Epicurious.com pulled together dueling menus for Election Night, an Arizona Party for Republicans and an Illinois Party for Democrats. The Epicurious menu, organized by Tanya Steel, includes Deep-Dish Pizza Margherita, Big Green Salad, Mojitos, and Red Velvet Cupcakes with Creamy Vanilla Icing for the Illinois Party; and Caramelized Onion Dip with Cilantro-Garlic Pita Crisps, Beef and Avocado Fajitas, Pineapple-Chile Margarita and Chile Brownies for the Arizona theme.
