We get hungry just thinking about it.

And with outdoor grilling season comes a new round in the age-old debate among backyard cooks: Which is better, gas or charcoal?

Some say gas rules because of convenience and temperature control. Others contend that charcoal rocks because of the flavor that it gives to the food.

What do you say? Grillers, start your grill debate!

I cook with gas and I'll never go back to charcoal again. As long as you know what you are doing with what you are cooking, it doesn't matter what kind of grill you use.

Ron Lewis - because much of the world's forests are being cut down not for the actual trees, but for grazing land for the animals we eat.

but for when you choose to eat meat, charcoal will always rule.

Like others, we have both. Sure, charcoal tastes better, but I use gas mostly during the week to cut down on time. The weekends get the charcoal. To me, its never really been a big enough issue to worry or argue about.

Charcoal grill. Natural charcoal costs more but there is no petro taste plus their fire lasts longer. I always use a charcoal starter ($10-15 at home improvements stores)which only requires a sheet or two of newspaper, plus it works fast and no nasty lighter fluid taste. Love grilling on damp cedar planks (again from home improvement store using UNTREATED cedar shingles or shims cust to size and sanded smooth.) I don't think pine straw is a good idea to use for anything except maybe a bird's nest. It is too volatile/highly flammable and stinks. Female who's been grilling for 20+ years and can run with the big dogs. I will, however, give credit to a male friend who taught me the basics way back when.

Ok, I'll admit to being a bit of a novice with charcoal. Great with a gas grill. I'm wanting to do more with my charcoal grill though.
I'm reading a lot about natural charcoal/real charcoal.... maybe it's been a while, but can you buy that at the same places as the briquets??

Marinade is for beginners. Gas grills are for wimps. It's merely broiling outdoors.

We have a charcoal grill at home---I love it. Gas grills and I don't get along and I feel safer with a charcoal grill---the best thing to use with a charcoal grill is a charcoal starter---they are AWESOME!

We have a gas grill, a charcoal grill and an electric smoker. It's good to have a variety of cooking methods. If you get home late after a long day, it's good to have a gas grill. When we have more time on the weekends, we use the charcoal. I think charcoal tastes better (if you don't use lighter fluid-nasty!). Of course, I have never been allowed to use any of them because I am a woman-which is fine by me because I don't have to cook!!
