Can’t Fugeddabout It? What’s the Sopranos Endgame?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Somewhere in that Great Gangland Slaying Boneyard in the sky, frustrated screenwriter J.T. Dolan (Tim Daly) is dying all over again. The reason? He just KNOWS he could write a better ending for “The Sopranos” than that hack David Chase!
We know how he feels. After eight years and six seasons, the way-more-than-a-Mobster drama is coming to an end next Sunday. And who doesn’t have a killer idea for how it should go out?
With a bang? (but for who?)
With a nice, long prison stretch? (but for who? and why?)
With an Extreme Makeover for Tony’s face, courtesy of the government plastic surgeons, and a new job selling aluminum siding in Scottsdale?
The Serf still wants Meadow to take over the family (I can see it now, male strippers at the Bada Bing!). Or for Junior to have been playing possum all along and to wreak his special revenge at the end. But I’m pretty sure none of that’s going to happen. So I turn to you, the way-smarter-than-the-average-Serf “Sopranos” blog posters. What did you think of tonight’s penultimte episode? How do you think it will all end? How do you think it SHOULD end? How much have your views on that changed since this season began? Or since the series began?
Some people think “The Sopranos” never lived up to its initial brilliance, others say it actually improved with age and subtlety (well, as subtle as characters who hang out in pork store can be). Still others think the growing criticism of the show is yet another example of America’s short attention span and constant desire to build things and people up only to shoot them down again (watch out baby panda Mei Lan, you’re next). But no matter which side of the debate you come down on, you gotta admit, it’s going to be weird not to be able to gripe anymore about how long it’s taking for the next “Sopranos” season to start.
Share your thoughts on these and other “Sopranos” matters here. And if it’s real fame and fortune you’re after, drop me an e-mail at jvejnoska@ajc.com so I can include your thoughts in an end-of-Sopranos story to run in the paper and online at the end of this week. We’d love to include you … especially since if we don’t hear from enough folks, we’re going to have to start having Paulie Walnuts knock on everyone’s door, heh, heh. (And I was only kidding about the “fortune” part)

They’re droping like flies now, yikes….look out Tony my man, they’re coming to get you. A part of me feels like the old code of honor where they don’t get the family of the ‘The Family’ may fall to the wayside. The NY guys may come after Carmello, Meadow and the wimpy son of Tony. Will Tony them all and run and hide? I don’t think so, I think it will all end in a blaze of bullets and we’ll let the TV Gods sort them out, who lives, who dies. Last night was a great show and I think the next one will be bigger and better.

Last night’s episode was EXCELLENT!!! I am so going to miss this show!!! I can’t even predict how it’s going to end, every prediction I’ve come up with thus far has been way off!
My only other thought is that Paulie is working from the inside & may turn on Tony next week. All of Tony’s closest allies are dead except Paulie.
but I really really hope that Phil RETARDO dies next week too he’s an azz!

Last night was the beginning of the end.Everyone is gone so Tony has no one to turn to or really trust anymore. He got bounced from therapy and he is on the run. So my prediction is the creator hits us with something out of the ordinary. I think Tony wakes up and realizes it was all a dream and that he actually is Kevin Finnerty from last season who was dreaming he was Tony Saprano. I know it has the smell of Bobby Ewing written all over it, but come on Tony being killed or witness protection is so expected that we need a weird twist to shake things up.

That is the way the final episodes should have started. All of the time wasted on A.J and Junior….bah humbug!!
The finale should be Tony killing Phil and having his FBI buddy arrest him for that.
Also, how can you wrap up all of what has happened in 1 hour. The finale should’ve been 2 hours long.

Remember, Chase has always said thats things don’t need to be tied up in a nice neat bow. He is going to leave a lot of things hanging, like Silvio in a coma and Tony hanging in the wind.
The best case is Tony goes undercover for the FBI to fight Terrorism….the worse case is he goes into Witness protection.
Ya gotta leave something for a movie.

Of all the beautiful (but sleezy) women that Tony has slept with, now he’s sleeping with an AK-47? Com’on. And why would Tony place such an important HIT as Phil, in the hands of a dumb adult book store owner? The relationship Tony had with Phil was too personal (remember the hospital). Tony should have done it himself. (it’s still not too late). You don’t get to be a respected mob boss by being soft. Show some guts. I hope the writers end the show with a bang. And I hope Phil and his little weasel side kick get it in the face!!!

It’s a TV show whats the big deal, everyone survived J.R. getting shot no one died when Dallas ended, I thought losing Howdie Doodie was a big deal, but I lived. Maybe now we can get off the sofa or recliner and actually do something, I think I can FUGEDABOUT IT.

I believe Tony will wake up and all these yeaars will be but a bad dream. His last scene last night was of him lying on the bed at the stake out house. David Chase ran out of material about 3 years ago. Then the next season was all about fowl language and senseless killiings and thugs nobody knew. Chase has admitted this was semi-autobiographial in Vanity Fair this year. He was probably Christopher to an extent with the frustrated writing and Livia was probably his mother and all the rest were relatives . Like Peggy Lee wondered, ” Is that all there is?”

Here’s my take on the Soprano’s finale: While serving a search warrant for an unrelated matter, the FBI notices evidence of dog fighting at the Soprano home. Tony turns “rat” and blames Carmela, who is arrested, tied and convicted; and ends up sharing a cell with Paris Hilton. In exchange for his testimony (the feds were really after Carmela, all along); Tony is given immunity. He leaves the family business and replaces Rosie O’Donnell on “The View.” And there you have it. It amazes me that American (Atlantans) are so interested in (and entertained) by TV show about a brutal, narcissistic sociopath. Has anyone ever stopped to think that David Chase is not attempting to chronicle the life of a Mafia boss? FYI, I am “Petey” (the former “Little Rascals” pit bull, and I want a piece of Mike Vick!

I think the war ends with Tony as the last man standing. He goes back to Melfi to try to reconcile, she’ll refuse and he’ll shoot her in a fit of rage (then take the steak recipe out of the magazine). Then Tony will go to his FBI buddy, work out a deal where he’ll rat out any survivors, go into witness protection somewhere in Arizona and change his name to Kevin Finnerty. Carmella, tired of all the mafia crap will refuse witness protection, leave Tony, and move to Italy to find the pony-tailed guy she fell in love with a few seasons ago. Meadow will marry her new sweetheart and move away from Jersey. A.J. will succeed in committing suicide. Junior will fall into a vegetative state drooling on himself. Janice will move the kids out to California. And the final scene will be Adrianna laying a rose on Christopher’s grave.

I suspect we’ll find out Paulie is now in cahoots with Phil (who explicitly told his guys to leave him out of the “decapitation”). AJ will either man up or wimp out spectacularly. And Tony either gets killed or goes into WPP thanks to his tip to the Feds re the terrorists.

I hope that Tony, hiding in Uncle Junior’s old house, has Paulie take care of Phil, and sadly he will probably die doing so, taking a last 1 for the “Skip”…Tony then flees to Fla. with Carm, leaving New Jersey and the mess behind, leaving everything open for a sequel, or a movie (I hope) I hated to see Sil get shot, Steven is excellent in that role…

The end? Whos is kidding who? Get ready for the big screen. Too much will be left hanging, no one will like the ending, and all involved or still alive will continue to make a fortune with The Sopranos on the big screen.

I’m with Jim Willoughby on Paulie!
My only question with that is - why did he stay at the safe house with Tony? I was thinking he was giving Tony up to Phil, but then I thought he would leave the safe house to be away from the oncoming carnage.

Carmella is going to find out that Tony had Adriana whacked - She will become enraged and kill Tony - Meadow takes on the family business - she is the one with the backbone - not AJ. AJ won’t last in anything he undertakes.

Great episode last night. If you sit back and look at things, Tony really has not been that great a boss. He’s made some bad calls all along the way, usually to appease NY. He killed his own cousin to shut Phil up (only it wasen’t enough for Phil). He killed Christopher for no good reason (bet he wishes he had him around now!) And they moved way too slow with this final thing. I would have had a contract out on Phil the minute he pulled that stunt at his house with Tony & Carmine. Then, even when he was tipped off by the fed, Tony took his sweet time going to the matresses, leading to the loss of Bobby & Sil. Fugget about the fact that he left this biggest hit of all hits at the hands of people that were not his most reliable solders (Paulie & that book store guy). At this point, I don’t have much sympathy for Ton’. However, that being said, if this show ends and Phil Leoardo is still alive, I will forever curse the name of David Chase and regret that I ever started watching this show in the first place.
While others are thinking Paulie may turn on Tony, I’m thinking Paulie may step up to the plate and pull his big butt out of the fire. Still, Tony’s whole life is crumbling around him…Fired by Melfi, Meadow changes her career path, AJ makes Fredo Corleone look like John Gotti, Chris, Bobby & Sil out of the picture, Uncle Junior out of money, etc, etc. It all adds up to not so good an ending for the big guy.

I would like Tony to be rescued by his fed pal and given a deal to rat out Phil. Tony and Carmella would then enter the federal witness protection program. They are relocated to Alpharetta, where they live out the rest of their lives on a cul-de-sac surrounded by other Northern exiles.

I dunno, what made the show fascinating to me was how the characters would add humor and pathos interwoven with the shock and violence, you’d wonder how could a funny guy like Paulie or Sil (does his tailor get credit?) do somem’ like dat. there was no humor last night, maybe its time to end it, but can’t imagine an end w/o a big let down

I like the ending sent in by Chris. I agree that Meadow will probably run away with the new guy. And I really like his Dr. Melfi confrontation! But here’s how the other plots should wrap up: We find out Paulie is snitching to Phil, but his fright overtakes him and he shoots Tony in the middle of the night, which puts Tony in a vegetative state. The Feds find AJ to question him about the terror sites he’s been pulling up on the net. AJ gets scared, tries to rush them and they end up killing him. Uncle Junior escapes while being transferred to the different mental facility, arrives on Janice’s doorstep and she hides him. Carm gets frustrated with everything going on and in a fit of rage, takes matters into her on hands, finds Phil and kills him herself… with Rosalie driving the getaway car. The last scene is Tony in the hospital room and an unidentified nurse pulls the plug on his respirator… camera slowly zooms in on Adriana.

I do agree that there are going to be PLENTY of loose ends after the last episode. There is just too much going on to be packed into a 1hour long show. I think a movie in a few years would do well at the box office. I’m going to miss this show.
P.S. I hope Phil Retardo, with his Bert from Sesame Street eye brows, and his c** eyed, crazy eyed, troll friend BOTH get brutally taken out.

I’m afraid that Tony did something that was the downfall of his kingdom. He killed Christopher. I might be wrong but Karma is a M!@#%T*(F&^%$$. (Different Jill than above). One thing no one seems to be considering is all that asbestos blowing all over Jersey. Someone’s gotta go to prison for that. Paulie is conflicted about which side he’s on, and he will get whacked when he hesitates while protecting Tony. Tony will then whack Phil, then get arrested for the asbestos. His buddy the fed will help Carmella and the kids escape and set up a new life (notice Carmella has been building a career for herself so she won’t have to depend on Tony forever). That’s my theory…Can’t wait till Sunday!!!

Paulie will not turn on Big T as that is his only family, he knew T’s dad and is loyal, what ever that means in their world. Nothing good will come out of the Finale, and no movie.
Two possible endings could happen, Tony wins but still loses as all his guys are dead and it’s just him and his family, his life as he knew it is gone. No money, no career no source of income and the FBI on his ass.
Second scenario, In a fierce gun fire, Tony badly wounded has enough life to take out Phill. Tony looks around and everyone is dead, he falls to the floor, reality sets in, Tony falls face first where he watches his life flash before his eyes, the past the future, Meadow getting married and looking happy, Tony smiles and than closes his eyes. The end!

I’m hoping Sil recovers. Lots of folks think that Sil had flipped, but I don’t think so. I wonder about Paulie, and how screwed up the hit on Phil that he put together went, but I’m thinking he’s OK. There’s no doubt Paulie set up the family. Thats why the hit on Phil failed so miserably, he made sure of it. Phil has promised him a position as king of New Jersey next to Butchie after the fall of the Soprano camp. Paulie’s always craved more respect and power, remember he reached out to Phill before because he was p** with the family about lack of support for his mom among other things. Some say Tony should have carried out the hit himself but that’s unheard of in the real world. Tone is already way too hands on compared to real life boss’s. Also a boss is hardly ever moved on without the aggressors having support from someone very close to the boss. That someone is Paulie. One more thing, the finale assault won’t be a big shootout unless chase decides to go hollywood. In real life the mob likes to “keep it simple stupid” meaning Paulie’s gonna try to get Tone alone and whack him. Im just curious what all AJs attention to teorrism is leading too.

How’s this: Tony keeps talking about how he’s lived his life with depression, right? Well he gets so depressed looking at everyone being killed and he kills himself! But only after he somehow links something illegal to Phil and his family and the police arrest Phil and he gets sent to prison. Both families basically dissolve.
Or … tension builds up - there’s a major shoot out with all the top people either shooting or in the rooms - and the cameras fade to black. End of show. No one ever knows who lived and who died.
Good night Sopranos! You will be missed!!!

No matter what else hapens, I am certain we will learn that Paulie has flipped and has been working for Phil Leotardo. The “botched” hit and the fact that Phil specifically protected Paulie from whacking all point to this. Whether Paulie gets his just desserts is the question- though I suspect Tony will have already figured this out!

A few guarantees:
Adriana is deader than Elvis.
Tony Sirico is an actual ex-con, who agreed to take on the role of Paulie Walnuts ONLY with the understanding his character would never become a snitch, so forget that storyline. Whether he would cross Tony for another family, though, remains to be seen.
Tony will not kill himself. Remember his aversion to suicide after Gloria Trillo and Artie/AJ’s attempts. Despite all his faults, he is a man of conviction, and believes what he believes. Suicide is out of the question.
And one prediction:
AJ will die. Tony will be left to ponder the ultimate effect his mislead life has had on his family, and the sole heir to his name. Meadow will survey the carnage and divorce herself from her father, thereby causing Tony to lose the only person in his entire life who he has TRULY loved without reservation or condition. Carmella will fly to Italy to seek out Furio, and Tony will be left utterly alone.
Come to think of it, maybe he WILL off himself…..

Why does it have to end? Oh well, here’s what I think. Adrianna is alive! After all who gets wacked on the Sopranos and we don’t get to see? Remember the screen went black. What’s up with that? I don’t think Paulie’s the rat, I think its Silvio. They did’nt even give him the usual last shot to the head like they did Bobby and everyone else in a mob flick when they want to make sure they’re dead. My worse fear is that this is all a dream of Tony’s or KEVIN FINNERTY

Here is what should happen: Tony rats everyone out. Goes into witness protection in Idaho. End of episode cuts to 2 years later. Tony walks into a convience store to get a cup of coffee and a donut. He gets shot as a bystander when the place gets robbed. Perfect ending. Keeps with the shows early nihilism.

All you idiots who are saying that Chase ran out of material are just that…idoits! The past three years of the Sopranos have been amazing. I’m sorry to see it end. I think Tony will survive though, or else who will want to buy the DVDs of the seasons knowing that the main character died in the last episode?

So you think you’re a Sopranos fan? Well then, the following trivia question should be a snap for you:
How many people has Tony killed during the course of the show? (And if you’re REALLY good, name them).

Tony’s guys will kill Phil while he’s getting gas. Paulie will reach out to some of his NYC connections to try to get things calmed down. No avail. Melfi will tell Tony that she feels responsible for many deaths. Phil’s guys will try to kill Meadow, by accident, when they blow up the car she’s riding in. (Remember she had a fender-bender last week.) Phil’s guys will blow up the house and almost AJ with it. At Meadow’s wake, the FBI arrests Tony and Paulie. FBI guy tells Tony that Paulie was a turncoat. But Tony won’t do time. He will have lost his house that he loved and the one person he really loved (Meadow) and his money. At the end, Carmelo, AJ and Tony will be a regular middle-class family pinching pennies.

I am still reeling over the death of Christopher. I was hoping that he went to witness protection and testified against Tony. I hope it was a fake body in the casket, remember how Carmela looked at it? I think there will be a cliffhanger. Great show that I watch with hubby every Sunday night since the beginning. We need another good show on HBO. I think that ‘Big Love’ stinks and should go off the air. Entourage is pretty good.

I don’t really care what happens so long as Janice get’s it. She’s the most annoying, shrill, vile character in all of TV history. Something grisly would be preferable

The show will open will Phil Leotardo getting shot in the head by Bennie. Tony will be back in control. New York wants a sit down, and Tony kills everyone associated with Phil. Paulie becomes the boss of New Jersey and Carmine becomes the boss of New York. Tony ends up at the ice cream palor with his family. End of Story.

One of Tones associates will spot Phill and tell where he is (remember he’s gone into hiding). He sends two guys to off him (he keeps Paulie out of it because he realizes he’s a traitor and he should have killed him when he started to earlier this season). Tony kills Paulie. The other families broker a sit down between the remaining Sopranos and Phills family. Carmine leaves Tony because of the stress he’s caused. Tony and Dr. Melfi do it and hook up. Aj is killed when he trys to join the fight against Phill and prove himself. The Feds move in and Tony goes runs off with Melfi to Italy. Movies to continue the story.

I meant Carmella leaves Tony. And maybe he doesn’t have to run off because the Feds give him a break after the information on the Arabs leads to them stopping a major teorrist attack.

SPOILER ALERT
The Chechyen that Paulie and Christopher botched killing in the Pine Barrens episode is going to return with Dr. Melfi’s rapist and Furio. All three are going to kill both Tony and Phil’s crew.
AJ will have surgery and become a woman, as he’s always secretly dreamed. Meadow will marry Patrick Parrisi and become as ineffectual as a mother as she was as a character.
Meanwhile… Tony and Carmela will escape… living happily ever after in the Mediterranean on the Stugots 2!

I”m probably too late, but I think just as they are all about to kill each other, the other NY families off Retardo and let Tony go. Why? Because Phil is bad for business (too much personal stuff) and has been setup by another family, and someone close to his organization has been feeding info to the FBI. Notice how the feds tip Tony off every time Phil is up to something. PAULIE is probably doing a 4-way Phil/Tony/FBI/Commission thing and decided to side with Tony against Phil knowing the commish would knock Phil off and he’ll rat out Phil and Tony and take a deal to Scarsdale. Phil gets whacked, Tony goes to jail, Paulie goes to AZ (and ends up in jail), and who cares about the rest of those idiots. Except Sil, who gets offed in the hospital.
Dang! I don’t have HBO right now!!

I have to agree with Shelley. I spent 8 years watching this thing. Even when the last two seasons sucked I stuck it out to see this all the way. This season was like the old days and to have it go down like, I felt jipped. I haven’t felt this ripped off since the Mayweather fight.

I’ve been saying for the last couple of weeks that as long as Phil got clipped, I’d be happy. Guess I was wrong. Although having the car run over his head was a nice touch. The whole Paulie and the cat thing was great, I thought. It showed Paulie as Paulie right up to the end. He’s always been superstitious and weierd about stuff like that. All these Paulie theories that have been thrown out there (Paulie flipping or playing both sides with the NY boys), I never went along with. Paulie is a simple character in this show. He’s there for comic relief and he stayed true to that right to the end. But that’s about all the good I can say about last night’s show. Typical of the way this show has gone recently, about three quarters of the episode was wasted with filler and we got about 20 minutes of good stuff. They spent way too much time this season on AJ. OK if you want to show that Tony has this useless son and all that. It could have been done in much less time. I don’t think in the history of TV has more time been wasted on such a completely useless character. You kept waiting for something big out of him because of all the time invested, but nothing. In the end, he’s all set to join the army and thinks its a great idea, until Tony finds him a nothing job with a porn producer trying to “branch out” into crappy straight-to-video movies. That whole story line was STUPID. The ending? Well, I think it was a

I can’t believe the best show on TV EVER ended with Meadow making several attempts to parallel park. She was supposed to get blown away while Tony, Carmela and the little butt were getting blown away by yhe guy who was at the counter and went to the restroom. To say we were all disappointed would be a major understatement. The ending really sucked.

I thought it was the easy way out to shoot it that way. Chase said he knew a long time ago how he would end it. Everyone’s ‘revealing’ clues from the past 8 episodes as though they ‘got it’ but he knew before he wrote those he was going to kill him off. So of course there were scenes inserted such as T and Bobby in the boat talking about whether you see it coming (the bullet that gets you). It was unsatisfying to go to black/quiet screen. Doesn’t have to be a happy ending, or a typical bloody ending, but come on, these are supposed to be the most creative minds in television, a blank screen is just…too easy. Fumbling with remotes instead of pondering the story is a distraction, not shock.

Don’t YOU get it? Chase set that up (they guy in the bathroom, the two black guys coming it, the guy in the USA hat) to make us paranoid and build up the tension. The guy at the bar maybe just needed to take a whiz, the black guys may have just wanted an ice cream, (when in this show has the mob ever employed black guys to carry out a big hit?) If the guy at the bar was there to whack Tony, why go into the bathroom? Forget about the Godfather scenario because why would he need to have a gun left for him in there…no one was going to frisk him when he walked in. And besides. The war was over at that point. Phil was dead with the blessing of his underboss. Who was there to keep the contract alive on Tony? I thought that maybe some of these guys were feds getting ready to take him down, but again, why all the cloak and dagger? Feds could just walk in there and arrest him or better yet, just pick him up at his house, they know where to find him. I take that ending (stupid and unsatisfying as it was) to mean that life goes on, pretty much as usual. Despite Tony losing most of his upper management, he’s in a stronger position now than ever, having done a deal with Phil’s underling and moving forward with netter relations with NY. This Walden, or whatever his name was that clipped Phil seems to be a capable fellow to step up in the organization, Paulie’s taking over the Cifareto business, and others showed loyalty to him in bleak times. His organization is in place. Maybe there will be a movie, maybe not. I kind of hope not at this point.

Did y’all forget about the suspicious looking character in the ball cap marking out the Sopranos and then ducking to his menu when the pie-faced creep came in and sat at the counter. In league? I don’t think so. I think Ball Cap is FBI - they want Tony to be alive to testify. Meadow will take the hit. AJ will enlist and die stupidly. Carmela and Tony will become Angie and Frank running a cleaning service in DesMoines complete with the cat.
Did anyone else think they saw Janice come into the diner? If you blinked you missed something.

I think this season has been full of filler, having everyone back for a final scene that did not lead to anything. The ending was left wide open for the big movie to come. Sil lives so it can be Tony, Sil and pauly to carry on. If we’re lucky AJ will stop crying by then. I do think it was a great show in the begining, even having to wait 14 months between seasons at one point did not stop me from watching.

I was p** at the finale when the screen went blank I thought something was wrong with my Tivo,I too believe he (Chase) is setting the premise for a movie down the road with all his characters still intact Sal,pauly, and Tony, unfortunately like curiousity of a cat I too will more than likely buy a movie ticket. I liked the ending!! Suspense, drama, questions - what more could you want? Leaves the door open for the future. The one thing I would have liked to see was a flashback of Sil “Just when I thought I was out, They pull me back in”.

Plain and simple, the ending sucked.
It should have been no guessing games, but cut and clear about what happened to each character remaining.
I will miss The Sopranos…
I love Tony Soprano.
