Imus, Oprah and Spelman College
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Now that Don Imus has lost his job(s) and some of the most heated rhetoric over his racist and sexually offensive comment has died down, it’s time for a more thoughtful, “where do we go from here” discussion. And who better to start the talk ball rolling than Oprah Winfrey … with an assist from some Spelman women?
Monday’s edition of “The Oprah Winfrey Show” will feature a town hall meeting on the topic of whether mainstream culture will change as a result of the national outrage over Imus’s divisive remarks about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. Among the panelists appearing on “After Imus: Now What?” are music/fashion entrepreneur Russell Simmons, hip hop artist Common and sports columnist Jason Whitlock. Some current Spelman College students will also join the discussion by satellite from Atlanta, according to a Winfrey show release.
You may recall that it was some Spelman students who helped launch one of the first nationwide conversations about negative portrayals of women in popular music and videos back in 2004. When popular rap artist Nelly was scheduled to appear at the historically black women’s college for a bone marrow drive, a group of students protested because of sexually suggestive and demaning images of women in his video “Tip Drill.” One outcome was a forum, also attended by men from Morehouse College and other Atlanta University Center schools, at which rap lyrics, videos and exploitation of women were discussed.
“The Oprah Winfrey Show” airs at 4 p.m. on WSB-TV in Atlanta.

With Whitlock there, it should be interesting. Thankfully Oprah has the insight not to invite Sharpton and Jesse.

Imus made an ignorant comment and was rightfully fired. Actually, his sponsors were dropping him left and right and CBS had no choice but to fire him. This is the way the free-market works. Sponsors are what brings them revenue.
My complaint is how he was crucified in the media and the bias of media coverage. Meanwhile, the coverage of the three young men in the Duke rape case has been buried on the back pages by the editors of all major newspapers.
Had they been found guilty of rape in a courtroom this week, there would no doubt be wall to wall coverage for the next 6 months. The AJC hasn’t even mentioned the name of the stripper who made the accusations against the Duke LaCrosse team.

To paraphrase a familiar adage - “Respect for our women starts at home”, and it is way past time for the rap culture to change. We must learn to respect ourselves before we can demand respect from others. I challange my African American “brothers” to resolve today to give our African American “sisters” the full respect they are due, from this day forward.

I thank Oprah for having this issue on her show.I am an strong believer that calling woman Derogatory names that are hurtful, disrespected, and embarrasing. And what better show than the “Oprah Show” along with an famous Rap Artist Common and Russell Simmon’s we need to put an stop to this in all aspect’s of life especially the RAP industry.

While I am sorry that the Duke men - not “boys” as they are being called - were wrongfully accused. I believe many don’t have much sympathy for them as they hired a stripper then began her calling her racists when the deal went paid. They were complicit as their behavior was exploitive of women and sexist. Why didn’t they spend their $800 to hire a girl from sorority row to come over and strip. Also, the Duke team was known for their rowdy elitist behavior and Colin Finnerty had a previous assault offense. This does not compare to the Rutgers/Imus case where these women had not done anything wrong at all! They experienced what many minorities and others face everyday being wrongfully accused. Fortunately for them they had the money to fight it. Hopefully they’ll stay at home and watch “Girls Gone Wild” videos to get their jollies and leave the strippers alone.

Healing?
Healing?
I’m sorry, I can’t stop laughing about that. That is such a totally ignorant statement. Look, the old man said something stupid, he did that a lot. But what a “victim society” we live in, where when you say something foul and stupid about someone, the nation needs “healing”
I suggest that Oprah have on the Duke lacrosse players to start the “healing process” for them. And have Jesse Jackson on to explain his role in supporting the lying sack of crap that made the allegation to start with.

Mike of Woodstock, your statement that “Anything Black is pure and Holy. Anything White is evil and detestable.” is demeaning and insulting to the intelligence of anyone who reads it - Black or White. There are a lot more good and decent white people in this country than there are not so good and decent white people in this country. There are a lot of good and decent Black people, and there are some very bad and awful Black people - let’s be real and forget about the hyperbole when discussing such an important subject. Imus was using public airways to demean some very outstanding young ladies, and in a sense, he was talking about an entire group of people. That group of people did not have the same access to those public airways to respond, so the media gave the group the only voice that it had, and I applaud the media for doing an outstanding job. Evil is evil, and Imus acted in a very evil manner. Bill Lundy of Mesa, Arizona

There can be no healing from the Imus situation until Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Rep. Rangle, and the entire leadership of the democrat party apologize to the three Duke students, the Duke lacross team, the fired coach, and all the families of these people. Jackson, Sharpton, and Nifong all must be fired from any and all jobs or positions the hold, especially with any civil rights organizations.

I have no problem with Oprah trying to lead well thought out conversation, which it will be as long as Jesse or Al don’t crash it. But if the topic will deal at all with racially insensitive subject matter, how then could the Duke players not be brought up with it. Though there was a political agenda the basis of it was totally race driven. Are the Duke players being invited to be on Oprah as the Rutgers team has been?

Apparently lost in all this is that Imus’ firing coincided with his annual telethon. Because of this knee-jerk reaction, millions of dollars that would be going to needy children/people will now likely be witheld. Imus is an idiot, no doubt, but the brainwashed Oprah masses need to kick back for a minute and realize the power they have cuts both ways. Oprah’s smart enough to know that. Her audience may only be on about a sixth grade level but sixth graders can learn. The fact that she’s capable of teaching them most anything and chooses to use her power to make them carry torches and pitchforks to further her agenda instead makes me feel a bit sad to say the least. “Healing,” indeed.

Imus used the offending phrase once, but how many times did news outlets repeat this same phrase in subsequent coverage of the event? Does the fact that Imus said it first somehow absolve all others from the same offense by repeating it over and over again? This phrase has been reborn and made immortal not by Mr. Imus, but by the incessant use of it afterwards. I agree with Chief, if Oprah wants a true dialogue, she owes the same attention to the Duke men and their accusers.

Why has it been acceptable for over a decade now for Rap groups and many in the black society accept songs and generals conversations amongst blacks where the “N” and “B” words and the word “Ho” are used in songs and the PIMP life (Don’t PIMPS abuse and harm women folks??) is praised and glorified by many. These racist and sexist songs are not only played on school property but in shopping mall stores where parents and children are trying to shop. I have registerd formal complaints with American Eagle and F.Y.E for their stores playing this vulgar, sexist and racist music in their stores while families are tyring to shop. One day in A.E I heard the “N” word used so many times in a song that I walked out of the store.
Why has this been allowed to go on and nothing has been really done about it UNTIL a WHITE man repeats what the black culture has accepted and has been saying in general conversations and in songs for decades now? As for the word “Nappy”- just google Nappy Hair books and for decades now books like Happy to be Nappy, Nappy Hair have been sold in Stores and been top sellers yet the word Nappy was not decried as being a horrible word UNTIL Imus used this word which the black race uses in books, songs, and in conversations. What a double standard. Let’s see how Oprah at least can clean up the TRASH music from playing in PUBLIC places like schools and shopping malls.

Let’s face it Don Imus said a stupid thing, but who cares? He looks like the grinch that stole Christmas—or Easter, I guess…..It all boils down to money—capitalism—Don Imus did not get fired to appease the black community, he got fired because he has mad himself a liability to CBS and liabilities don’t make money. I am black, I wear my hair naturally and I know that I am not a nappy headed ho…If you know who you are in Christ you don’t get easily offended.

This was suppose to be a discourse about the female basketball players of Rutgers and the manner in which Imus disrespected and demeaned them over the public airways. I beseech you to stay focused, and use the another forum to discuss the Duke Lacrosse players and the injustice to which they have been subjected. I agree with you Joanne, there is a double standard but lets consider why it is acceptable. As a whole, African-Americans, Blacks do not have any significant economical powers—though rappers make these songs, they do not own the record companies that distribute them. Why are the distributors and the record company owners allowing this mess to permeate our society? I think that is the question. Anything that is broadcasted constantly is bound to have influence, especially on children.

I believe that the healing process needs to start in the black community. Everyone goes around in the black communities using the ‘N’ word & the Ho words & all over the comic entertainment business & then you get a popular radio dj show host that happens to be white tries to see how far & how much he can get away with & he gets busted. If you want the disrespectful words to stop I suggest the blacks stop using them and then the copy cats will sieze as well. God please bless us all with at least a little good common sense.

I think that Oprah is doing a good thing. Remember, Oprah was villified recently by rappers by calling them to the carpet about the “N” word. And, she championed the original effort of the Spelman College students regarding that “Tip Drill” video.
As far as “Healing” is concerned, this is not a racial reconciliation healing type of meeting. As you have noticed, Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton isn’t invited, but neither is Don Imus or any other white person that has said any derogatory comments about black people.
So, this is not about being healed from the victimization by the hand of white people. This will be a discussion within our community that cautions about the images that we produce for mass consumption that is not reality for the majority of our culture… including those who portray this as fact.
See, I feel that if we as the black community show an ACCURATE portayal of life in our community via our Arts, Don Imus’ comments would not be tolerated by even Don Imus. Nor would lacrosse players from Duke University would have less likely tried to purposely hire a black stripper to denegrate her and call her all sorts of names for entertainment.
But it is my opinion that it is the greater African-American community as a whole that is at fault to allow these rappers represent our community and our women in such a way that someone who is outside our community can feel comfortable doing those things.
But, with this initiative by Oprah and by pulling advertisers and other initiatives, those days are numbered…

Oh, and to answer a lot of people’s questions:
It was NEVER acceptable in the black community to call people the “B” name or calling people the “H” word either. There was controversy regarding the “N” word, but even in that, most black people don’t call themselves by that name.
It’s like alcoholism and drug use being seen as acceptable within the white community because Van Halen of Jim Morrison abused drugs. Or saying that Satanic worship is the acceptable religion of white folks because of those rockers that did that back in the late 60s- early 70s.
Or taking any vice or bad attitudes in music and saying that it’s OK to treat women of their race that way because “They treat their women that way.”
There’s a lot of double standards out there.

There is good and evil in every race of people on this earth; there is racism on both sides of the fence. Racism is alive and doing well, but Racism is as deadly as cancer and HIV, AIDS. Racism distorts everyone’s perception of an individual based on their color of skin. Racism robs us of appreciating one another by the content of our character and goodness of our hearts. Whether you are black, brown, red, yellow or causcasian, no one has the right to refer to any group out of their character or out of their names. Black on black mischaracterization as well as white on white mischaracterization is as wrong as white on black, black on white, hispanic on white, etc. There is only one race of people on this earth, the human race. The Creator created us all equal in intelligence, emotional, psychological, etc because we are all gifted with talents, skills, and spiritual gifts from heaven above. Racism is narrow minded in its perception of individuals. I am thankful that Imus apologized and I am glad that the female basketball team and their coach accepted the apology. Everyone makes mistakes and fall short to the Glory of the Father, but we do have the right to forgive and move on to better things. I pray that this ordeal has shown that we need some more understanding and appreciation of each other ethnic background. United we will stand, but divided we will fall. The color of skin, the religious background and economical status should not deter us from loving and appreciating one another. Love is of the Father. Let us love one another in word, deed and action.

**Why don’t we protest and block the awful and degrading music of the hip hop, rap culture? I am appalled by what Don Imus said but I am also appalled at the cavalier acceptance of the language used in our music today. The words are hurtful and degrading and the actions described are repugnant! How can we improve our role models and examples for our youth? Everyday they become more and more desensitized to the meaning of the language and the very disgracing comments that seem to be okay in terms of how we treat one another. WE do need free speech but we do not need these as our free speech icons! Maybe Oprah will promote cleaning up our language in general and especially the lyrics of all those songs sold for millions and then encourage positive education and role models for all our youth in America!

Is the term “nappy headed ho” part of “mainstream culture”? It probably is now, but let’s face it- it originated in “hip hop” culture - and that’s where the change needs to be made.
This isn’t really about how that culture treats women - it’s about how that culture treats their children.

First off I would like anyone on the post that has talked about Jessie & Al to provide me with anything negative that was said in reference to the Duke Lacross Players Anything a link, or newspaper article online. You Can’t!
Also you can’t compare the 2 incidents they are as different as black and white.
Also, I have worked with both Jessie & Al, they are not compensated for their civil rights work so it’s not about the money.
Also it appears that the only white people that speak out negative about Jessie & Al, are the ones with problems, that would like to kill the voice of civil rights, minority rights, and women rights, you’re wasting your time it’s not going to happen. When they decide to stop someone else will step in.
You will never kill the voice of any people that are oppressed period. and I look forward to the information in reference to what was said by Jessie & Al in reference to the Duke Lacross Players.
Your problem should be with the D.A. he was the one that tried to hang those kids. You anger is focused in the wrong place.

Going back to what Ed said - an ignorant comment from someone cannot possibly compare to what those young men at Duke went through over the past year. Thousands of dollars on attorneys’ fees, Duke’s collection of liberal professors calling them everything but children of God in the media; and everyone else rushing to assume that rich elitist white men had once again besmirched and befouled a proud young African-American woman, who after all was raising children and going to college at the same time! It seems to me that if we could just put rhetoric aside, and focus on facts, things would go a lot more smoothly and equitably.

This is so hypocritical. No need to get get so upset at anyone else calling us names when we do it to ourselves. These rappers are a disgrace & embarrassment to our Black race.(Imus included) They stoop as low as they can get just to get paid. They have no respect for there own mothers. I think what happened to Imus was a good thing. I do not agree with people loosing their jobs however, I do agree with consequences for your actions. As for Oprah and the townhall meeting I hope this really does address the rap industry. It is time for someone to hold the music industry accountable for the lyrics that are so nasty, disgusting against women, police officers and race. When we start respecting one another we can put the issues of past in the past. We seem to not be able to move forward when we continue to live in the past with our behavior, and attacks on one another or our very own. Thanks Oprah. One that note we also need to discontinue the reanactment of the civil war…here in Ga. I find that very offensive. You don’t see the North re anacting that part of history every year. Also as for the Duke University students they brought them amongst themselves when they had a party and decided to invite dancers to the party. So they too need to be held accountable for their actions. I do not agree with what happened to them however, they too need to step up to the plate and take responsibility for their actions in holding a party and their behavior. We need to really start being responsible for our own actions…

Look back at the comment made by B-Bro. He is a 100% correct. As a teacher, I hear my black students using these derogatory words all the time. When corrected, they always explain to me that this is acceptable language in among themselves. Black, white, yellow or red, these words are degrading to hear spoken to any person of any race. Bottom line, these words of choice that have grown acceptable in the black communities are downright unacceptable. Imus is an old millionnaire, who cares about his future? The real victims are the Rutgers players. The Duke situation doesn’t compare, Duke players placed themselves in a precarious position, these RESPECTABLE young women were representing an IVY LEAGUE school while being scrutinized by someone with the resemblance of an old, decrepit elk. Meanwhile, Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are tortured by the fact that the Durham stripper wasn’t raped (I guarantee you they wish she really had been). I haven’t even seen anything significant in the AJC exonerating these Duke lacrosse victims (yes, the players were the victims here, whether you choose to accept that truth or not) and chastising the reprehensible actions of Mike Nifong in perpetuating these fabricated charges that could have ruined the lives of several innocent young people.

Bill Cosby is correct. The black community has not made their role models (rappers, athletes) accountable for their actions. The resulting outcome is low standards, derogatory treatment of women and no accountabiliy that we see in todays society. I agree that Imus did something wrong on his show by making those comments towards the Rutgers basketball team. What I do not understand is why Al and Jesse only come on TV when a white person does something. Why are they not using their powers to put a stop to it completely with everything (look at RAP music). Had this been anyone else they (Al and Jesse) would have dismissed it saying that they really meant to say something else and it just got blown up by the media.
There are still problems in this country related to race, and people like Al and Jesse just seem to fuel the fire and make is worse instead of trying to unite.

Bill Cosby tried to promote change in the African-American community about 4 years ago? Doesn’t anyone remember? I’ve always wondered why Ms. Winfrey has never had Mr. Cosby as a guest on her show. They are both blacks who became successful via hard work. Perhaps she did not subscribe to his philosophy in years past? The black community is self-destructing. It will be interesting to see what the Oprah panel discusses tomorrow. I hope they adress the blatant double standard: it’s ok for rappers and blacks to use these words, but heaven forbid a white man uses them.

Why are we suddenly finding a need to discuss racism? Because we are all racist. Doesn’t matter whether we’re white, black, Hispanic,Chinese,Jewish or whatever. We are all racist. It is our God given right to choose with whom we will associate. Some would mistakenly call that discrimination. In a strict definition of the word it is. No amount of preaching,no amount of teaching can deprive us of the right to choose our friends. That does not mean we cannot be respectful of other people regardless of differences in skin color and ethnicity. But we can - we must - resist those who would attempt to force upon us as individuals a cookie-cutter guilt complex society which is intended to reduce us to humanoids. We pride ourselves on being a part of an advanced civilization. Inherent in the membership in such a society is a responsibiulity to be civil one to another. Beyond that save your lectures for the uncivilized. Not the masses.

This is not to justify the tasteless humor or vile language common in the entertainment media, but calling the Rutger’s women “ho’s” is only the latest offense in a long rap sheet of comments such as “money grubbing Jews,” saying the Williams sisters should be on the cover of National Geographic, calling noted black journalist “the cleaning lady,” and on an on. Is it reflective of a certain complicit guilt reflected in media coverage paid scant attention to his career pandering to the lowest possible denominator which makes me question the values of his adamant defenders? These have not been errors of judgment spoken in private 20 years ago like Jackson’s “Hymie town” offense or even the disgusting tone of some rap music, but have reflected a persistent and repetitive pattern of direct, personal attacks that play to the angry lynch mob. If Imus repeatedly says these things in jest and does not believe them, he has truly sold his soul for a few pieces of silver.
Regarding the so called “double standard,” every cultural group has jokes and language “within the family.” This does not justify it but, lawyers tell the worst jokes about themselves and are offended when others repeat them. I have seen Jewish, Latino and female comedians tell jokes about their own groups that no one from the outside would dare. The “Soprano’s” call other Italians “Dago’s.” British jokesters call themselves “Limeys” and mainstream white Americans make jokes about American leaders, while both bash their own cultural mores in ways they would find offensive if done by someone not of their nationality. Any police officer will tell you that one of the greatest threats in a domestic disturbance call can be the wife who comes to the defense of the husband who she called the police to complain about.
Double standards are human nature. Of course, there is “black double standard” regarding humor and who can say what. Why should blacks be “less human” than everyone else.

I believe that Don Imus, being a former member of the national media, should have used better judgement in using the words he used. I am an African-American teacher, and if I had used the same words in talking to one of my students, I would also lose my job in a heartbeat. I have no sympathy for Don Imus or anyone, white, black,or any nationality who call women “hoes.” No woman deserves to be called that. As far as the Duke lacrosse team, they are lucky to just be accused of a crime. Not that this is a good thing, but there have been people who have been jailed for upwards of 20 years for a crime they were “accused” of. They lost a part of their life in jail for something they did not due. So the Duke players should be thankful for not having to endure the stress of being in court….

I don’t think there was any “national outrage” at the comments. There was outrage from Sharpton, Jesse J., the rest of the hypocrite crew, and maybe some black folks. The average American could care less about this. The average American wishes the liberal media with its clear agenda would drop the issue. Why doesn’t the media attack the rappers and the hoodlums I see running around this city from saying words like “ho”? Well, the media won’t because these rappers are “artists” and because the hoodlums are “disadvantages.” Don Imus is not black America’s problem - black America is black America’s problem.
We are all grown people and should be able to handle other people’s comments. Oprah doesn’t need to lead any healing. Moreover, I have no interest in listining to anything any so-called “black leader” has to say until they issue apologies and have personal meetings with David Evans, Reade Seligmann, and Colin Finnerty. Maybe one of the reasons people have the opinions they do of black America is because a skanky black stripper, who had slept with multiple people on the same day, used the media and the black establishment to crucify three young men that did nothing more than show up at a party….

Is this a double standard ?
BLACK history month, would it be wrong to just have a history month for all Americans rather than a black or white. Remember the day when someone wanted the seats on the bus to be for BLACK and White not for one or the other ? Is this prejudice or racist to single out one race or only racist if it said White history month ?
What is United Negro College Fund ? is that racist if only black people can get that ? Remember the day when Black people was not allowed to go to same class as white people. Is this prejudice or racist to single out one race or only racist if it said White american college fund?
What is BLACK Miss America ? is that racist if no one other than black women can get into it ? Remember the bathroom door said white people only and that was racist. Is this prejudice or racist to single out one race or only racist if it said White Miss America ?

Imus apologized to the Rutgers team-they accepted. I heard no such apology from the stripper to the Duke team. HITLER= EVIL IDI AMIN= EVIL POL POT= EVIL IMUS= Ignorant Bigot, Not Evil

it has never been acceptable in the black community to use n* and b* to describe anyone. your twisted perceptions of a few in the MTV rap world should not be thought of as the culture of the entire african american race.
its simple. rappers put that stuff out because people still buy it. money talks. if it doesnt sell, they wont make it. but we have been through this before (C. Delores Tucker). what happened? 2pac and company sold even more records. dont buy it, and it will go amay.
oh, and no self-respecting adult, regardless of race, should ever consider an early 20’s rapper or an athlete a role model. get real.

Why can’t we as African Americans put must of the blame where it belongs, which is on ourselves. When the comment was made the first thing you heard form a local morning show host was “where’s Bill! where’s Oprah!” If you can recall this same guy told Bill Cosby & Oprah Winfrey to sit down and shut up after they made objections to offensive lyrics that rappers use in their songs. This morning show host also held a forum to show the serious effect this white man’s comments had on the black comunity. I remind you that this is the same guy who gets paid to spin records with lyrics such as “HOES IN THIS HOUSE & B*** this & B*** that. But the sad part is that the so called professional sisters(school teachers, business women, lawyers, doctors & mothers)are on the floor dancing to these horrible lyrics. After the forum was over the radio station went right back to it’s same old format of hip hop and boggie fever. Hey! Where’s the Bishop? I’m not hatten on anyone but I guess a buck$ will always be a buck$ no matter the cost. WAKE BLACK FOLK!

Thank you Oprah for your leadership. We must as a community of people come together and discuss our differences with mutual respect for each other. Don Imus earned his outcome by living on the edge of shock jock comedy broadcast. It’s now time for those who still profit from disrespecting women and different cultures to be held responsible for their actions. No artist in a free society has the right to refer to women as B***, Whoes and or Sluts. Those of us who purchase the work of these artist are supporting this continued disrespect. After all we are all someone daughter or son!

Everyone,
Don Imus’s radio show is controversial because it helps with ratings and generates revenue. Don Imus no more believes the stuff that he says than your boss who tells you that you’ll always have job if you work hard. It’s very hard to keep a talk show fresh and cutting edge without some controversy. Please remember ”it’s about the dollars generated”
Rappers don’t believe that their mothers, sisters, wives, girlfriends, daughters are any other females in their lives that they write and sing about are whores (hos). They do it because it sells. Call one of their mothers a “ho” and see what happens? Please remember ”it’s about the money”
Advertisers have a vested interest in their bottom line. As long as a show has eyes and ears, and they buy the products advertised. They could care less. There is no corporate responsibility. If that is threatened, he had to go. Please remember ”it’s about the dollars generated”
Oprah could care less about healing, Don Imus or his comments. However this is an excellent way to increase her viewers and advertising base for her television show. Please remember ”it’s about the dollars generated for her show”
The Rutgers’s girl’s basketball team probably has never even heard of Imus, but it was an excellent way for their coach to get some publicity, increase donations to their foundation and garner a raise for her for next year for the way that she handled this. Please remember ”it’s about their dollars and publicity generated”
Sweethearts, Jesse and Al, already know that ”it’s about the money”
Finally, when you are laid off and your job moves to a lower cost production area to wherever, the company’s owners don’t think that this is immoral, improper, or perhaps unjust to you. Do they worry about hurting your feelings for your economic livelihood? Nope, they don’t. They are making a business decision about the company and their futures.
Trust me, if they could find a monkey to do your job tomorrow and give him a banana, you’ll be gone by noon.
Please remember ”it is about the money.” It’s sad, but true.

I am amazed by all of this! Imus was wrong. We all know that. But why is he such a target? It’s OK for Rappers to use words like ‘n**’, b***, ho, and other sexual remarks in their songs and that’s ok. In fact they make millions without anyone batting an eye about their lyrics! I just don’t understand! One white guy says something derogatory and the country needs to be ‘healed’. The Dixie Chicks voice their opinion about our ‘leader’ and they get booted off the air. But the rappers can say what they want - which, in my opinion, is the most dangerous and demeaning of all - and it just goes unnoticed!! Why aren’t we outraged about that? Why don’t radio stations refuse to play those lyrics? Why doesn’t Oprah talk about the ‘healing’ that’s needed from that degredation? And, if it’s all about racism, why is it OK for Chris Rock to get on a stage and talk about whites like their a bunch of baffoons and it’s ok for Oprah, just last week, to make a comment regarding dancing, saying everyone knows that ‘one white guy’ at the party that dances like an idiot! She even pinpointed one specific guy from the audience telling him he dances like that ‘one white guy’. I’m sure he felt really special after her comment! That’s ok, I guess, because white is the majority? If everyone needs to be ‘healed’ - then try being fair and try to rid this country of ALL racism - not just selected statements.

Ok, first of all Imus’s comments were not racial. As I recall, he didn’t mention any race. He said nappy hair and ho’s. So I am confused as to why the whole racial card is being played yet again. The country has free speech. African Americans can call each other the N-word, white people can call each other the N-word. Imus can call the Rutgers basketball team nappy headed ho’s if he wants to. The only reason he was suspended was to try to appease people who blow everything out of proportion. The only reason he was fired was because of lost sponsership. This was blown so far out of proportion it makes me sick. We more worried about what some radio talk show host says, then real issues in this country. Our moron population in this country continues to grow at a rapid pace. God help us.

Can someone call Oprah for me?
I’ve had people call me a fat, lazy, donut-eating pig. I feel hurt by that, and I need someone to set up a conference so I can get an apology from the citizens of Springfield.
Al Sharpton told me he had some awesome velour track suits he doesn’t wear any more, that will make me look less fat. He said he got them at a fire sale at Freddy’s Fashion Mart.
Now, can someone PLEASE get me a donut? I seem to be stuck in my office chair!

I dont understand what Oprah can do to ease the tension in the community. She hasnt been there in so long and she cant be a spokesperson for me. I know she has a lot of money and she has invested it in the poor in Africa, and she had let some children get a start in life, in Africa. But she really hasnt done anything for those of us who may have made bad choices, but still strived to do good works in the community and with our children. I was a victim of what people said about my “kind” back in the 50’s and I had dreams, but I let what others say cause me to just exist. I still have dreams, but the first 18 years of my life was in a foster home, and I hid myself from any negative views. Oprah had a chance and she took it, but she never really thanked those of us who gave her that boost,as a matter of fact, I think she turned her back on us,is this her apology? is this to be her thanks now?? Or is she just doing it for publicity.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. They were earned by the group which is stereotyped.
Tattoos? Branding? Afro-centrism? Victimization? Multiple births out of wedlock? Gangsta behavior?
These are some of the behaviors of the hard-earned African-American stereotypes.
Ball caps? Bad teeth? Tattoos? White supremacy? Victimization? Multiple births out of wedlock?

I am glad to see that most people on here have relayed their opinions in a polite and non-degrading manner, no matter how varying they are. We are all entitled to our opinions.
I am also glad to see that a few black women have the same opinion as I, exude respect and you will get respect in return. How can we as black americans, african americans get respect if we do not show ourselves as respectful (rap music, fiction books, movies, etc). The problem with this is the artists that create the vehicles that include disrepectful elements are not driven by the want or need to do this, they are driven by the demand of the public and the executives (we all know what their backgrounds consist of) at the top of the industries that have their own need $$$. Even discussing this with the guy I date, there is a difference in opinion and he believes this (other industries) to be a non-issue in this situation.
In some aspects he is correct, the Imus incident is an issue in itself, he (Imus) was wrong, and was rightly fired. However, this should be used as a vehicle for education and a kick off to reprimand others so…the next target should be the top level executives within the industries that produce the vehicles. I have witnessed, myself, where artists indicate they put this stuff out there and do not allow their children to listen to it, they do it for the demand/money. So people…stop demanding it and Jesse or whoever, aim higher!

Wake Up America
I have two comments to make. As a African American Woman. Who wears her hair natural and probably would be considered a nappy headed woman by my own people because I decided to let the hype go that straight hair is better and weave is a god-send because we can look more like our white counter parts.
The Duke case has nothing to do with this Imus case. First of all why didn’t the Duke players hire a white woman to dance for them. It’ll tell you why because black women are still desired by white men on the down low. Just like the slavery days when the masters left their white wives in bed and went to the slave quarters to get their favorite black slave woman. A lot of white men still think black women are some kind of sex slave, wide in bed and just plain nasty. They were curious of black women and they wanted to see. And actually I think something did happen because they had the notion that this woman would be down for what ever and when it didn’t happen all hell opened up. They are not completely innocent and neither is this black woman because she has put herself out there to be disrespected. And Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would have a hard time defending this woman because of the life that she has decided to live. Personally I think the defending part started at home for this black woman when she was younger something happened to her along the way to make her feel less than. It starts at home.
I have watched Imus in the morning several times. He has said some crazy stuff that has made me cringe. The fact that he thinks that these black women were nappy headed hos because they had tattoos cracks me up because I have watched those tapes of them playing and I do believe that all of the black women had perms or extensions or braids and there was no nappy hair. Or what we call nappy hair. So he doesn’t even know what nappy hair is which says to me that all black women no matter what your hair style is considered nappy headed. Black people need to wake up we are p** because of what Imus said. But we walk around calling each other n** and thinking that it means something else because it’s not n****. I’ve used the word before just like all of us black people in this blog. We have got to change what we saying around company because as we just found out just like babies they are listening and they are using our own words against us.

There is a lot of ignorance in this blog. Lets make Rap music the scapegoat, black people are good and whites are evil, and the most ignorant of all comments as long as you see yourself as African American there will always be problems. The majority of these white southerners will never understand the plight of black people. They still want a month to celebrate confederacy, which equates to the mis-treatment of millions of brown people. I say brown because I have yet to meet someone who was Black (dark brown, but not black). These are the same people who say they don’t see racism; perhaps black people are just making this up claiming the victim roll (that’s what most white people believe).
What does Duke Lacrosse have to do with Imus. Okay if we go that route does that mean the so-called Negro should be able to legally go around raping white women, and killing white men? Furthermore, should we go to a picnic (the majority of us know where this word originates from) and hang white people, or should we go out beating white people with water hoses, and sicking dogs on them. Perhaps we should go around spitting on them, and make them ride in the back of the bus. I mean it’s only right since it happen to African Americans. I know I know perhaps we will let get a group of black police officers and go into a white neighborhood, and let them beat white boys like Rodney King, or we can let them shoot a white boy 50 times on his wedding day. It’s only right, it happened to black, so why can’t it happen to white people.
Hip Hop did not create these words. These words were around in the 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s, so stop blaming rap. Who owns radio, television, records labels, and the majority of the fortune 500 hundred companies? That’s who you need to blame. Stop blaming the small guy being pimped by the government. That’s like the government declaring a war on drugs, so he locks up your neighborhood ignorant drug dealer, instead of policing themselves. See a lot of the profits from drugs funds Americas wars overseas. People are lazy so they trust every word that comes from our media outlets. Do your research on Afghanistan and the drugs they are manufacturing, and exporting directly to the United States.
This situation with Imus proves that race and sex relations in the United States suck. Before you throw me under the bus, just know I am a United States Veteran who fought in Dessert Storm. You people love America so much, how many re willing to die for your country? I guess its easier placing blame. See I just don’t talk the talk I live it. That’s the difference between soldiers and civilians. If you don’t like the current state of America get off your azz and make a change.
African Americans we as a people need to police ourselves, and we have to become a bigger economic force. Do I agree with popular Hip Hop nope, but just like every race, and music genre you have the good and you have the bad. Some people just choose to make negativity popular.
Americans we as a people need to learn how to respect one another. Judge me from a personal experience, not from a stereotype. Instead of scapegoating, why don’t you guys do the research, and then draw your own conclusions.

Healing from what? He made a stupid, asinine comment. Let’s move on. There is so much more important things going on in the world today than this, yet we are so fixated on Imus and the comment heard around the world. This is between Imus and the team. It’s very doubtful before this that anyone on the team even knew who Imus was.

Just one question
WHO said that calling other black people b***, ho’s, and n words was acceptable in the black community?
As a black woman(I dont call myself african american either). My opinion is and has always been that it is not acceptable, my parents taught that it’s not acceptable, i teach my children that it’s not acceptable.
I do not buy music with such language, i do not allow my children to listen to such language.
I’m disgusted when I hear it.
Fortunately for me, i’m more mature and responsible than to repeat it.
Don Imus should have been more responsible and mature and so should many of you who think it’s ok because “other black do it to each other”

Stop b*** about the Duke case. Look at the Kobe Bryant case where the same thing happened. Rape cases happend that way - think of the thousands of innocent accused black males accused/jailed because of the “white female in distress” - only to be freed 20 years later due to DNA.

Listen, way back when, Imus once referred to Mother Teresa as a “b***”. I’m not even Catholic and I thought that he should have been fired then.
I have a better snyopsis: Black people need to get themselves together and start to understand that the more we allow vile comments between each other, the more the general public will look at it as “ok” to say whatever they feel is “appropriate” to say to us.
If you want my opinion, Imus was only fired for one reason: there are 2 white girls on that team, and YOU KNOW their parents are not happy that their children were on a team that will be now known as “Nappy Headed Hos”. With that said, Rutgers University has alumi that in pretty powerful positions, that was not going to sit well with the powers that be at all. Black people can believe it was due to the uproar that Imus got fired, I’m here to tell you, keep dreaming.
Imus may have lost his radio show, but I GUARANTEE you that he will be on Satellite Radio within the next 6 months.

For the record, the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the Jewish Anti-Defamation League (ADL) issued statements praising the firing of Imus as “long over due” that have somehow been drowned out by this obsessive hatred for Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. Their most boisterous critics are the ones who create their exaggerated aura of validity and importance.
I don’t agree with many things they do, but FYI, Jackson and Sharpton did lend support to Bill Cosby and had him to address meetings of their organization to express his views and both have repeatedly addresssed concerns, largely ignored by the media, against the transgressions of rap music.

Get out of here with that Hip-Hop s** Oprah doesn’t even know here own color and everyone should notice that, rappers don’t go around calling white woman nappy headed whores on national radio there music is edited nor do they have millions of dollars worth of advertisers. It’s more discussing because none of the girls hair were nappy and had tattoos and this dumb ass says it 2 times and laughs about it what if your daughter was discriminated against. Oprah has made a strong statement against Rap Music because of the lyrics. She refuses to have Rap or Hip Hop artist on her show. Ludacris only got an Invite because of his being part of the cast of CRASH and they won the Oscar for best picture if I am not mistaken. Members of the Rap/HipHop industry are boycotting Oprah because she has made it known that she will not have rap artist on her show. 50 cent and few of your more vulgar artist are leading the outcry against Oprah.
I am an African American/Black American which ever politically correct name we are being called this decade. I was raised in a two parent home My father taught me to be a Man and my mother a gentleman. I dont’ listen to any music that has that use of the word B or N, they have never been part of my vocabulary and never will. I don’t even use the word as a term of endearment.
People have their stereotypes of different ethnicities. Black people are just as racist as whites. I have heard some garbage come out of black people mouths about other ethnicities and it don’t make it right no matter the level of melalin in your skin.
To me the ideal show for Oprah would be to have the Duke Men and the Rutgers Women on the same show. That would start alot of healing. To hear how white men were affected by an alligation and how black females were affected by hateful words which were used allegedly used by the Duke players to the stripper. It can brin about a healthy exchange from two different groups in the same age range.

Gwendolyn ferrell The girls on the Rutgers basketball team are not acting that way. They don’t carry themselves that way, they are doing something positive. So everybody think it’s ok to throw them under the bus because of other issues in the black communiity. That’s not right. They don’t deserve that. If you go to your job and say those words to a co-worker, in most places you would be fired, so why not Imus.
The way to fight rap music is with your dollar, 70% of rap is purchase by white kids. Tell your kids to stop buying it. I don’t buy it nor do I allow it in my house. No matter how much Jessie,Al or anyone else protest they will keep making it as long as people keep buying it. stop buying.

It’s a completely different scenario,” said Snoop, barking over the phone from a hotel room in L.A. “[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing sh—, that’s trying to get a n—-a for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [which announced Wednesday it would drop its simulcast of Imus’ radio show] going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them mutha——as say we in the same league as him.”
It is not acceptable for rappers to use such language. But it is different when you are describing a ho in your song as a ho. A true lady does not carry herself like a ho. The Rutgers basketball team were not hos as far as Don Imus knew.

Most blacks had NEVER heard of Imus until this inciedent. Who cares what he said. Jesse and his clan have been spewing their rhetoric for years and it never seems to bother the media.
Blacks always think whitey owes them an apology for slavary etc. I will never apologise for anything I didn’t do. I’ve never owned a slave and grow tired of the BS from blacks(JJ and Sharpton) over the hurt and pain they have gone through. Fact is, racism has fed their families for their entire lives. They need it or they will have to get jobs. Thas why they jump at the chance to stir the pot.

The funny thing about Hip Hop music, black people stop buying it a long time ago. The major consumers are your white son’s and daughters. Why do you hate it so much, perhaps its because your kids are buying it at alarming rates. These major corporations are marketing this product to the white community. This music didn’t become a problem until white kids starting becoming the targeted consumer.
“The Irony” rappers talk about police, or political issues the records labels will sensor the project. Rapper disrespect their women and their community record labels support the project.

Mike,
I don’t think you’ve been watching the news as much as you should have. I don’t know what the AJC has written about the case, but I do know that major news networks immediately aired the girls’ name, picture, and a video of her dancing. She was immediately put on blast by these stations. So don’t I don’t think anyone is trying to convey the message that what’s black is holy and what’s white is detestable.
The media is always one-sided in their representation. If you want to look at it as a black/white issue, think about the coverage that Natalie Holloway or other young white females get when they go missing. If you do your research, you’ll find that you never hear much about the young black (or Latina) girls who go missing at/around the same time.
Race may play a part…but class does as well. Sorry to say it, but money coupled with skin color always takes a different spin in the media. Did you watch the 20/20 special about the black man in Texas who spent 17 years in jail for one marijuana joint and the middle-class (relative to a political official) who had killed someone in his home (self-defense?) and been caught several times with cocaine. The latter never spent a day in jail. The difference? One was poor and black. The other well-off, white, and knew the right people. So no one says that white is always bad. There are a lot of instances where blacks in the media also receive unfair portrayals and coverage. Don’t believe the media hype. Judge each situation for yourself and don’t let this specific incident make you feel like all black people want is to be portrayed as holy-because we don’t. There’s good, bad, ugly, and evil in all groups of people-no matter the religion, race, gender, or class.

I was impressed by Rev. Sharpton’s responses to tough and direct questions by Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday this morning. He explained why he didn’t feel necessary to apologize regarding the Tawanna Brawley episode or the Duke case. Why many may have legitimate disagreements with him, he point was correct, why apologize for something in which erroneous information was given to him? I also thought Chris Wallace had ‘egg on his face’ when he indicated he could find no public statements about Rev. Shaprton expressing concern about those in the black community that spout filth. Turns out there were many instances, it’s just that the major media failed to cover it (or perhaps they were not as interested).

Yeah, he’s evil…..
RIBERA, N.M. — Don Imus’ banishment from the public airwaves deprives him of a critical platform to raise money for the sprawling Imus Ranch, where children with cancer and other illnesses get a taste of the cowboy life.
Before he was fired last week for calling members of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team “nappy-headed hos,” Imus pointed to the northern New Mexico ranch to make his case that he is “a good person who said a bad thing.” With Imus out of a job, some wonder whether the pipeline to charity money will dry up. Just as corporate sponsors backed away from his radio show, “I think you’ll see a similar effect on the charity, where the corporate donors will find a less hot-button charity to support,” said Trent Stamp, president of Charity Navigator, a New Jersey-based charity watchdog group. Imus said he and his wife, Deirdre, are surrogate parents to the youngsters who spend a week at the property. Nearly half of them are from minority groups, and 10 percent are black. The Imus show’s annual two-day fundraising radiothon, benefiting the ranch and two charities that refer children to it, had raised more than $2.3 million as of Friday, according to Deirdre Imus, who hosted Friday’s show. The ranch’s list of contributors is not public information, but it has relied heavily on corporate contributions. In the long term, Stamp predicted, the firing would cause “irreparable harm.” Children ages 10 to 17 who have cancer or serious blood disorders, or who have lost siblings to sudden infant death syndrome, spend seven days at the ranch at no cost to their families. The ranch hosted 90 children from March 2005 through February 2006 and spent $2.5 million, almost $28,000 a child, according to its most recent federal tax filings

I can not be angry with Imus because of his comment. I am angry that Black people have allowed rap music to send negative messages, just like the message Imus put out there; and never complain like they should. Imus does not know what at “hoe” is; he got that would from a Black person. Please Black Americans, I don’t understand how we can be angry over a man making one statement and still watch while rappers sell millions of CDs calling women derogatory names every other word. The videos are filthy, Snoop Dogg is a “Dog”. He is degrading Black women more than any old white man can. Nelly and ninety-nine percent of all rappers degrade Black women; not to mention the women degrading themselves. We need to clean up our own act and neighborhoods, schools, homes, etc. and stop getting offended when a white person says something about us that we say to each other everyday in words, actions, music. Until we start to respect ourselves and each other; how can we expect respect?

Black men have for centuries been lynched or sent to prison because some white woman accused a black man of acting improperly or some white men thought a black man acted improperly toward a white woman. White famalies would dress in their sunday best and pack a pinic lunch to go watch black men hang in the town square. After the lunch and the lynching they woudl mail postcards to relatives of the lynching. Some white folks would even cut off parts of the black man for souvenirs. So now white folks are ouraged becase three elitist white boys got accused or rape and had the resources to hire the best attorneys to be found free. Now, all you white folks know how African Americans have felt outrage for centuries when their sons, husbands, uncles or daddies swung from a tree because white folks accused a black man of acting improperly toward a white woman. They never had the opportunity to plead their cases as the white boys from Duke. But in this country white folks do not want to admit their racist past. I’m sure some of you will holler as usual “well i didn’t live in that era” but you and your famalies still benefit from the racist behavior of your ancestors.

I got the answer for you - check it:
Supply & Demand. We question strippers, but aren’t they meeting a demand! Stop having white businessmen going after work and you’ll end that profession.
There is a segment of rap out there meeting a demand - WHITE kids from the ‘burbs. Newsflash, black people don’t buy the hip-crap that they play on 95.5 the ‘burbs. Corporate america is the one marketing and pushing that crap. Stop having your white kids download itunes of Laffy Taffy or buying Nelly Albums (lol) and you’ll end that garbage!
Lets get to the real issue! Spelman and others - stop the complaints about LYRICS! ITS THE VIDEOS that people respond too! But let me ask you - EVERY single one of those video “hos” are paid and sign contracts - no one is forced to be in those videos! So is it the “black man” degrading black women - or the women themselves?
Hip hop that deals with the plight of black people or just celebrating life, love, and struggles never gets the attention it deserves. Yes, it may have questionable language - but that’s art! We don’t ever hear about Guns & Roses or other rock bands who use raunchy lyrics? So don’t question the lyrics, unless you put them in context Spelman girls & Oprah. Question the mindless, hip-pop rap thats played on MTV and others.
Here’s a list of “REAL” hip hop (many of whom call for an end of this hip-pop movement). These lyrics will make you people see the true beauty of hip hop and the power of creative verse:
Mos Def, Master Ace, Common, J-Live, Cesar Comanche, Murs & Slug, Soul Position, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, Hi-Tek, Deux Process, Symbolic One, Hieroglyplies, Seven Star, Oddities, Zion I, Strange Fruit Process, Atmosphere (white group from MN), Kool Keith, and so many MORE!!!!
Man - you guys are missing out. Just realize there is always more to what you see! We live everyday working side by side of all races! Most people are within one standard deviation of tolerance! Few racists occupy those 3s.d. and outlier positions! We are all one!
Personally, I think this is a plot by foreign governments to get Americans to fight over race and rap music so they can take advantage of us!
GO USA & support our troops (who could care less about race)!

1) Yes, we all know people need to go buy the CDs that have the dirty words on them. Problem is, these people who play those CDs then blare them at level 10 through otherwise quiet neighborhoods and people’s children then get to ask them what a B* and a N** is. Lovely. And when was the last time you listened to V103? They make such a poor attempt at bleeping those words out that it’s almost a waste of time; anyone with a brain can decipher what’s being said.
2) Who cares if Eminem sells more records than any rapper? White people have more money to spend. Besides, the fact remains that for every white rapper, there are fifty black ones who are just as vile if not worse.
3) Hugh Hefner and Larry Flynt do not degrade women in a forum that little kids are likely to witness. See 1).
4) I have a deep respect for people like Kirk Franklin — and I happen to enjoy his music. I would highly doubt he sells more CDs in the under-25 segment of the black community than most rappers though, and those are the people you need to be worried about.
5) Unlike most rap stars, Madonna, Britney Spears, et al are not out getting arrested for partaking in gun fights, trying to smuggle cocaine and semi-automatics on planes, or otherwise endangering the American public on a regular basis. And no, white teenagers do NOT necessarily look up to them - especially not to Britney (and especially not now that she is bald).
6) Comparing Woodstock to rap culture is like comparing a rat snake to a viper. I won’t even bother responding to your argument in any more detail than that. Furthermore, it is pretty inane to see Frank Sinatra’s limited involvement with the Mafia as being even remotely as dire a public threat as the BMF. Good grief, child!
I rest my case.

It’s very informative that someone would try to justify the accusations against the young men at Duke by dredging up the history of white racism in this nation. Lynchings of black people were horrible and nothing can possibly justify them. The fact that they did occur does not, in any way, excuse what happened to these young men. They were accused, by a nappy headed ho, of doing things they didn’t. Yes, they had money and they got good attorneys and charges wound up being dismissed. They never should have had charges brought against them! These young men don’t have to apologize for being able to afford good representation. I don’t recall any O.J. apology and he really did the crime he was charged with!

When you think about it, the women (regardless of hairstyle)who generate revenue for Rutgers University without being able to share in the revenue, ARE “hos”. While some may view the (opportunity to receive a) “free” education, as “compensation” for their “work”, even the cruelest pimp gives his “hos” a taste of the take. I may be crossing the line, but as I see it, people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, the Rutgers A.D., the President of Rutgers, and Oprah Winfrey are de facto pimps. The irony is they all raised a stink about the use of a word, which implies the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team are “whores” while they ALL exploit the situation for their own professional, financial and/or political gain. This does not excuse Don Imus for his remarks, but when you think about it, we (United States) should be more concerned about the people who look to people like Imus (and Sharpton, and Jackson, and Winfrey, Sean Hannity, Rosie O’Donnell, etc.)to form or shape their opinions and values. Maybe it’s because I grew up in the shadow of NYC, so I heard Imus as a kid, but what he said should come as no surprise to anyone(no more than Americans should be surprised by what Sharpton and Jackson said about the Duke Lacrosse team, what Anne Coulter said about John Edwards, or what the Swift Boat Veterans said about John Kerry). Racism is horrible, but none among us can control the thoughts, words or ideas of another (save the media executives who nurture this type of garbage until the point (as previously stated) when the “asset” becomes a “liability”. It’s amusing that Imus was fired for “crossing the line” when WE established the line. Grow up America (and lose the hyphens).

last night I was accosted by a panhandler at a gas station. I told him I was not going to give him any money, and I went into the store. When I came out, he gave me a dejected look and said “sorry for being black.” WTF????? No, I’M sorry there are so many of you in this country who are so engrossed in the whole victim culture that you don’t realize you don’t have to live that way. Get over it and go make something of yourselves, and do it for YOU, not for anyone else. If you don’t think you can, look at all the successful black men and women in this city who came from where you come from.
I for one am kind of glad Oprah is doing this, regardless of what her motives might be. It is time the black community opened the floodgates to an in-depth, brutally honest discourse about the many issues that currently plague it.

The young women on the Rutgers Basketball Team should be the subject of a “What it Takes To Achieve What You Want and Grow With It” Poster for everyone, especially lower-income American Females. I feel badly that they were not allowed to enjoy their success to the fullest extent possible. I guess we could blame Jackson & Sharpton for that since they couldn’t wait a bit longer before grabbing the media attention from the young ladies. Jackson and Sharpton cannot hold a candle to these young women in the class category. These ladies have taught us to go after what we want with a vengence and not to ever lose sight of what we want to gain. They were not ever expected to win the National Women’s Basketball Championship. They had to maintain the focus on the top prize from the very beginning of their season, while they scratched and clawed their way thru dozens of games without becoming discouraged with setbacks until they came to the final game of the year against the team that was supposed to win it all. The euphoria these girls felt after the buzzer was quickly dashed a few hours later as Sharpton decided not to think about the girls feelings, but about getting his own media attention back from Barrack Obama. He definitely could have handled things differently without stealing the limelight from the girls. The class the basketball players showed in insisting on a private meeting with Mr. Imus at an undisclosed location should be a lesson to both Jackson and Sharpton. After the meeting, the team believed that Mr. Imus’s apology was indeed sincere. I wonder if they agreed that he should have been fired. I doubt it. The success of these young women is what all young women should strive for in life. Some of them have fought hardship all of their lives. They have had to endure harrassment for getting good grades in order to get to college, for even thinking they could ever become more than what they were a few years ago. The fought hard on the basketball court, but had to fight even harder against cultural expectations to get to where they are today. Sharpton, Jackson, Rankan and those like them want to keep people disadvantaged because they wouldn’t have a following if people decided to show initiative and take charge of their own destiny. If there was not so much public assistance being dowled out for self inflicted deficiencies, i.e. lack of education, teen pregnancies, drug abuse etc. people would have to think about their futures and what they could achieve. There are far too many grandparents who have worked and saved all of their lives to be able to retire comfortably who are now raising, (not sitting) grandchildren whose parents have never had a goal in mind for their lives. If these people could successfully take care of themselves and their families without public assistances, the likes of Sharpton, Jackson, Rankin, Lewis, McKinnie etc would not have a following. The NAACP, when founded, stood for The National Association for the ADVANCEMENT of Colored people. What is needed today is The NAAAP which stands for the National Association for the Advancement of ALL People. Black Americans who have conservative views, and expectations are ostracized by their own race and disparged by other Americans who believe those who have kept their eye on the goal of self suffieciency should be taking care of them. Mr. Imus apologized to the people who mattered and they believe his apology was sincere. I didn’t hear the comment because I don’t listen to his program and I wouldn’t, but he sincerely apologized and that should have been the end of it. If he was to be taken off the air it should have been because the public stopped patronizing the sponsors, not because the race speech police say he should. This is very frightening that these people keep perpetuating the race hate in this country. The definition of “racism” is “believing one race is intellectually superior to another”. This isn’t the case here. Free speech is the point. If we police it here then we need to police all of the derrogatory media being put out today that I find offensive. I hope that doesn’t happen. I will change the station, not allow it in my home, and not patronize places who sell it whenever possible. That is my right. Yes people need to keep their eye on the top prize as these Rutger women did and make the best of what they have to work with in their own lives. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NATIONAL CHAMPS RUTGERS LADIES IN BASKETBALL AND IN LIFE. GOOD LUCK TO ALL OF YOU.

If anybody can help this situation it’s Oprah. I have never seen or heard of Imus before all of this, but I hear this Rap music all the time. Being that since my son Robby was killed in a car accident two years ago at the age of 18, I have rented out a couple rooms in my house to some of Robby’s friends-They play Rap in their room and I mean this stuff is crap—no I’m sorry-EVIL CRAP. So I let them know that either the Rap goes or they go.You know I live in Southern California where many white teenage males have no idea of their own identity. They dress and talk like the Rap stars I mean it’s sad how confused they are and how their music has no love in it-NONE- Between growing up with the innocent MARIO BROTHERS games-only to advance to violent KILL games like Grand Theft Auto, where they actually kill woman and men of all color-acting like they are GANGSTAS. Please if your son or daughter has not experienced these violent games yet—DON’T ALLOW THEM TO. Again between the violent Rap music and violent video games teens really have an up hill battle. As far as Imus-well to hell with him and the Howard Sterns of this world. Go get em Oprah. Robb Corless Sr.-Corona California

totaldisadvantage, you don’t have a clue. You bring up Cynthia McKinney, and I can bring up thousands of thousands of white political leaders who suck. The only thing I have to say is George Bush, and from reading this blog he represents damn near every white person on here. The only president elected, who never won. Damn he’s a very intelligent guy.
Look at Hurricane Katrine, If it was thousands of white people dying Bush would have re-acted different.
But you will never get it, that’s why you ride around with confederate liscencse plates on you pick-up truck. Read a book man learn your history.
White people have screwed everyone. They made their own people indenture servants, Irish people were dying from famine, while the English watch and participated to their demise. I don’t have to bring up what these people did to Indians, Mexicans, and Africans. Look what they did to the Jews. History tells us that these people are flat out horrible and never content.

If you don’t think Paris Hilton,Brittney and others are a bad influence then go to spring break,Mardi gras, any buckhead bar,or college campus and you will see young white girls getting drunk in public, doing drugs, and sleeping around like Paris & others.Paris Hilton & others have been arrested plenty of times for DUI and barroom fights. Paul Mcartney has been arrested for drugs at the airport in the 70’s,so has members of the Rolling Stones were arrested for drugs in the 60’s & 70’s as well as many other rockers just like rappers.Kids has access to porn everyday on the internet,do you know how many kids sneak and watch the Playboy channell and read playboy magazine?Kirk Franklin & others sell very well in the Black community, but for some reason the white community would rather buy, listen, and talk about rappers who make dirty and violent records. Those rock singers from the 60’s & 70’s didnot sing about their sexual exploits but is well known and well documented in books, movies and tv specials.Do you remember the vidoes in the 80’s from groups like Motley crue,Poison,Warrent,Whitesnake and others? steve,
are you familiar with the “accounting” practices of the NCAA and its members? The Athletic Departments of ALL “major conferences” and members (private institutions like Duke, Wake Forest and Notre Dame, as well as public universities like UGA, Rutgers, Texas, etc.)operate separately from the Universities that “host” their semi-pro enterprises. The “Final Four” tournaments (the men’s in Atlanta and the women’s in Cleveland) generate millions, if not BILLIONS of dollars for the NCAA, the television networks, and the conferences. This revenue is divided amongst the NCAA, the conferences and schools (who use the bulk of it to “operate” including the multi-million dollar contracts used to lure coaches). Do you really think every taxpayer in NJ gets a “dividend check” from the Rutgers Women’s Basketball team (or the Football team)? sure a successful athletic program is good PR for any school, or any state, but is not PR (marketing) the cornerstone of any successful business? The NCAA, the major conferences AND their respective member athletic departments ARE “private corporations”. They may operate under the guise of “education” but the bottom line is their bottom line. Look at the ND/NBC football deal. Look at Joe Paterno’s or Bobby Bowden’s contract with Nike. Look at the Big 10 Network (modeled after the success of the NFL Network). These “teams” are franchises, not universities. I’m not saying this is good or bad, but let’s call it what it is; a business venture fueled by the (uncompensated) labor of teenagers and young adults. The kids ultimately decided if they want to be a part of the whole filthy enterprise, or not; but major college sports is a business, and the “workers” ain’t “getting paid”.

I keep hearing the phrase ‘racist’ tossed around. Maybe the idiots using that word should look it up first. A racist is someone who believes one race to be superior to another. Nothing in the comment made by Imus was racist, bigoted yes, but not racist. We now live in a society that allows reverse bigotry to be accepted for something none of us were responsible for well over a hundred years ago. It is OK for Luey Farry-con to have a seminar entitled ‘For Black Men Only’, but let a white man try to pull that off, Black History Month, what a joke, where’s the White History Month. Black Entertainment TV, let some white person try to name a channel White Entertainment TV, See how fast the race whores Jesse ‘I never met a camera I wouldn’t lie to’ Jackson and Al ‘couldn’t spell NAACP’ Sharpton would be setting up photo ops and marches. Hell Jesse Jackson is going to pay the lying slut from North Carolina’s tuition,(of course, her welfare baby is more than likely one of his love chil-ren) and no, before all of you people choke on your chitlins and spill your afro sheen, these remarks aren’t racist, just bigoted. Blacks want the percieved racism to go away, quit playing the race card everytime the wind blows a different direction. Lastly, please stop calling yourselves minority, That ended long ago, the biggest minority now is the middle class white man. Blacks and whites had better learn to get along, cause soon we will all be brown and calling each other taco or pedro or some such name, when the Illegal Criminals outnumber us all. Opps, there I go being a bigot again, better call Oatmeal Winfrey so that she can help the healing begin.

On the same show that Oprah interviewed the Rutger’s basketball girl’s team about the Imus racist and sexist comment she featured a hip hop dance coach. In the middle of the demonstration of the dance coach Oprah uttered a despicable racist and sexist comment about white men when she posed the question “Are you ever at a party where someone, usually a white man, who’s dancing to a beat that you don’t hear and he’s really out there all by himself…”. The hip hop coach tried to dress up the comment by saying “yes, he’s listening to an ipod” Gale, Oprah’s friend, chimed in by saying that he would be dancing to his own beat “in a good way”. Oprah did not pick up on the cues by her show mates and she remained with her racist comment about white people and sexist about men by denigrating the way a white man would dance in a clumsy or unattractive manner. I demand that Oprah be fired by ABC for uttering that despicable comment the way Imus was. I am a white man and as a result of Oprah’s comment I am totally self conscious now of dancing in public after Oprah defamed my category. A White Man

I have read some of the responses to this blog and there are still some people who don’t get it! If you were to sit back and really look at this whole situation just a little bit more clearly.Imus was dead wrong no matter who is speaking up for the African- Americans. Yes Jesse and Al have their own issues but they are not walking around using their platforms to call other races out of their names.Things that they have done is to themselves and really does not effect their judgement when it comes down to what is straight up racism! Yes those guys at Duke deserve a great big old apology from everyone including Jesse and Al, but we could not even compare to what injustices that have occured and still occuring to black people since history has begun. If those boys really wanted to have a good time without trying to per say “get black dancers” than why didn’t they hire some other race from the jump? They may not have rape those girls physically but I’ll bet you they had a ball mentally raping them! That’s just my opinion because that is what we call freedom of speech in America.. not calling people out of their names POINT BLANK! If we just stick with stating our opinions and quit worrying about white people,1,000,000 to the black people 12=ratio of injustices that have happen in the past!

The black community is so biased; with the exception of the Spelman women, I do not see how Oprah’s guests for her “Healing” show can help the situation. What needs to happen is someone from the music industry and radio industry need to be on the show. What if Billboard magazine refused to rate songs with the “ho” word, or what if the radios simply refused to play them? What if WalMart and Target said they would not put this X-rated music on their shelves? That would make a change. How do we pressure WalMart and Target to keep the stuff of their shelves? We stop shopping there—not just for music CDs, but don’t shop there at all. That will bring about some healing

Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson are ambulance chasers. Wherever there is trouble, they are there to get their mug taken. I can’t believe the African-American community doesn’t stand up to these fools and tell them to stop speaking for them or claim too. They don’t address the real problems of the community they claim to represent. Instead they hype flashpoint issues and make them much more prominent than the underlying issues. Education, parenting, voting. These are not issues that Al “Big Mouth” Sharpton and Jesse “infidelity” Jackson address, because they are only looking self-advancement and to blame the white culture.

I am grateful that Imus did what he did and said what he said. It was wrong and very unfortunate that a long career has come to an end. My gratitude stems from that fact that at last there seems to be an outcry for us to all reject that kind of laguage and it’s associated behaior most prominently displayed in hip hop culture.
There is an anti-achievemnt mentality that has grown to epidemic proportions and it threatens to devastate our nation. It has greatly jepoardized our youth who seem to reject anything that stand for honesty, hard work and decency. The very fiber of what has made America great.
Don Imus is but a catalyst that I hope will bring about change. Our education systems are suffering because our children are so heavily influenced by the trappings of a decadent sub-culture that is becoming more mainstream every day. When I see one of my former heroes and role models, Lee Iococa appearing in a commercial with Snoop Dogg, I am appaled. It just demonstrates that too many of us are willing to sell our children down the tubes in pursuit of the almighty dollar. Too few of us stop and consider the damage that these images, behaviors and lifestyles have on our youth.
I hope that the outcome of this unfortunate situation is that we start to take a more responsible role in determining what is acceptable. It is not a question of race or gender. It is a question of character and integrity.
Calvin G. Sims, Sr. is an author, lecturer and Master StoryTeller. His groundbreaking book “When the Student is Ready, the Teacher Will Appear,” has long decried the negative impact of hip hop and other cultures on the education systems and therefore the overall culture of America. David Brooks had it right. He said that Imus was not being literal, that it was in the realm of entertainment. Pat Buchanan was also insightful when he said it was his “shtick”. I say that Imus’s joke or comment was in poor taste. That’s all. It’s amazing how square so much of America is. I, being Jewish, don’t mind that Imus said that “thieving Jews is redundant”. Couldn’t care less. It’s all shtick. It’s a character he played on the radio. Don Rickles was no different. Carrol Oconner was not Archie Bunker. Fantasy is not reality. David Brooks was making that point on Face The Nation. By the way, it’s been said that Imus refers to his own wife as a “green hoe” (because she’s an environmentalist). Does he hate his wife? I don’t think so. Is it in poor taste in the view of most couples? Probably. Do people act out roles even in real life? Most definitely.

How do you explain the black kids at the mall calling each other those names at the mall or other hangouts? I’ve overheard them. It goes way beyond MTV.
As much as I like Oprah, she had a slip of her own last week. The same day that she had the Rutgers team on her show via satellite, she had another segment about hip hop dancing and made a comment about white men not being able to dance. Check the message boards on her site. A lot of people weren’t happy with her comment.

Listen to the comments made by Duke, prime example of what is wrong with this whole picture. Making those statements about Jesse and Al was a real good feeling for you I suppose. And to add, the comments were racist cause how many white people have nappy heads? And Abraham your statements was just off the scale!

Who cares about the Duke Lacrosse Team? They were paying for strippers! Not on a national stage battling for a championship(Let me wipe the tears). They were paying to degrade women. I agree they were falsely accused, but oh my God. White kids were falsely accused. The world is in Revelations!
Oh well, let’s go into history. Let’s talk about the thousands of women and men that were lynched by whites in the south without going to trial(Silence).
Yes that was an awful comment made by Don Imus a couple weeks ago. Now J.Whitlock and Oprah plan to cash in on the Man’s idea that Hip Hop is the reason behind an old white guy making degrading remarks against the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team. I would understand the relation if Justin Timberlake said it.
I agree that Rap/Hip Hop has gone to the hoe and bi..ches well way too many times. The irony is that record companies only pay for the grimmiest or sleeziest music these days. The artist or the music can’t solely be the blame. They’re only trying to make a buck. They may be lacking creativity and morals, but this is the plate that was given a lot of these kids. These two uncle Toms are just contributing to another problem in the African-American community. Rap was an innocent topic until J.Whitlock threw in his .02 cents. They assist by helping divide our community to make a buck. Oprah doesn’t care about blacks or Rutgers, she cares about image, money, and quite naturally women. The content of Don Imus comments and the content of Snoop Dogg’s, “Outro” on the Chronic Album or any rapper have two meanings. I work with women that listen to Rap/Hip Hop music, and also love songs that call women b…ches and hoes. They also know that the songs are not referring to them or attacking them as educated women. Don Imus made a clear statement about those elite women, that affected us all. Rap is always to blame though. What about Neocon politics?
Thanks to the wartime enviornment it’s ok to say raghead, niqqer, and faqqot. Is rap/hip hop to blame? Rappers are always brought up when someone white let’s a racial slur come out of their mouths. It’s funny that most of the album sales are in the suburban communities, not the urban areas. Who’s really supporting rap? White kids! Rap is also to blame for drug use and gang violence in subburban communities. Rap/Hip Hop has always been dragged into the picture when racism and drups are involved with white america. If some white kid shoots his teacher, they say the music made him do it.
Let’s just end Hip Hop all together. Next jazz will be the Genre to be attacked for the lack of female saxophone soloist. Hip Hop has always been dirty and grimmy. It speaks of the realism in America that most don’t want to talk about. No it doesn’t represent the masses of African-American or low-eco individuals. Rap/Hip Hop was designed to express your emotion through song. Where are the modern day Public Enemy or African Bam Bada?

Hey Abraham, I don’t think comments about one’s ability to dance can compare to insults about one’s moral fabric. But I do get your point that blacks think they can say what they want, even about their own people. For example, just Friday (13 April), Imus’ chair is not even cold yet, and one of the black radio hosts has a stupid skit about “Whitney Houston” and Macy Gray. In the skit, “Whitney” is asked what she thinks of Macy, and “Whitney’s” response is “I don’t know that nappy-headed ho”. Is that sickening or what? Just 2 days earlier, this radio host (Russ Parr) is taking calls about how what Imus said is so disrespectful!! Mr. Parr’s use of the word “ho” was just as sickening. It is time for our black media folks (radio hosts, musicians, and producers) to accept that they are no better than a Don Imus.

Too bad all this energy can’t be used to further the education of all of today’s youth who are being influenced by the Hip Hop artists. The event is over, folks. Remember, we have the first amendment and Imus was entitled to say what he wants. That said, I don’t agree with what he said. However, I feel that CBS bowed to the black community in the firing of Imus. If you are going to take him off the airways, also remove ALL hip hop, etc that defiles women. Fair is fair. But then that would not make Sharpton et al happy. They would raise another fight regarding their “rights”. Everyone has a “right” to breathe. Anything else needs to be earned, not given to you because of your ethnicity!

I see the problem being JJ and Al Sharpton. Most people, if not all think they disgrace the Black race. They don’t bring races together, they seperate them further. They are “leaders” per se’, yet they made racist comments and were not removed from their positions. Did they try to make ammends? Yet they rally (and succeed) to have Imus fired. Once more, they live the double standards.

As for the “healing”, MOVE ON, people. The event is over. You got him fired (disregarding his right to free speech). There are much worse events happening to people in the US everyday. Let’s worry about starvation, lack of health care, rape, murder, lack of education, etc. These are young adult women. If they cannot handle this and over the situation, they have a very long and unhappy life ahead of them.

I keep reading about how Blacks are supposed to have a “victim” mentality but I keep reading more White people whining and complaining than anyone else. They blame EVERYONE for their problems. Blacks, Hispanic immigrants, Muslims. Now they’re mad because Imus was fired and they’re trying to link it to the Duke scandal. Only a mental midget would link the two as one has nothing to do with the other. Grow up and let up on the Rutgers’ team. Unlike the Dukies, those young ladies were doing nothing but minding their own business when Grand Dragon Imus unleashed on them and now you’re mad at them for being attacked? Only the most cowardly, disingenous amoral thugs would engage in such unethical mean-spirited behavior. And there seems to be plenty of that on the AJC blogs.

Now a days, seems like being Black is a blessing. You can get away with slapping a police officer, or filing false rape charges against 3 young white men. Imus made a horrible, disgusting comment, he should have been punished, but not crucified. He has done a lot of good in his 30 years, which was totally disregarded. How can someone be a reverend when he tries to get someone fired. Shouldn’t he teach forgiveness? you can get away with saying anything against Jews, Muslims, Foreigners, but not Black.

Lets get to the point of this controversey, this does not have anything to do with, race,al sharpton, jesse, duke lacrosse, oprah, etc. The point is you cannot go to any job and call someone a “nappy-headed ho” you will be fired if someone reports you to your boss or to your HR dept.Rappers can say the b-word,n-word,and ho because their employers allow it and who are their employers? It is the record company and the people who buy their records, request their songs & go to their concerts. If the record company doesn’t promote and sell those cd’s then rap music will end,if the public stops buying their cd then the rappers will be out of buisiness.Remember how popular disco, punk, heavy metal & grunge music was? There was once a demand for that type of music and those types of artist, so record companies invested money in promoting, marketing, and signing those types of groups and music. But when Disco, punk, heavy metal,&grundge music stop selling the record companies stop putting out those different type of music. So in other words if you don’t like rap don’t buy it!

SB,
What connects the two episodes is the involvement of Rev. Pokechop and Rev. Baby Daddy. Both were quick to judge the young men at Duke and, of course, both jumped at the chance to run Imus off the radio. Mission accomplished! Attitudes are going to be much harder from now on though!

What would Oprah Winfrey, Al Sharpton, or Jesse Jackson do for me? I’m a 30 year old white educated man. Why don’t they talk about the 2 white officers slang by a 25 year old black male? Do they care since “whitey” was the victim? I think not! When I go into a store and am treated rudely by an African-American, do these 3 care? Reverse discrimination lives on but is seems to have a blanket over it. My hat goes off to the law schools across the country that have fought it! May God be with everyone. First of all, let me break down the differences between “hip hop” and “rap.”
Hip hop is the freestyle DJ’ing emcee style of rap that I grew up with in the 80’s with artists like Whoudini, Curtis Blow, Grandmaster Flash, Slick Rick, Doug E Fresh, et. “Rap” is this really stupid music that came from the ashes of when people were whining about gangsta rap and look at what you sowed because “booty” and “bling-bling” rap devolved into what was a beautiful artful expression.
Now, many of you are crying and whining about why the black community won’t do anything or protest against rap. The problem is we have. The reason why nothing became of the problem is because it demeans black women, the mainstream media didn’t care enough to cover it. The fact is rap isn’t going anywhere as long as the big white owned record labels stop making money from the white children of suburbia so you really need to be paying attention to what your children are listening to and buying into.
Oh and one comment from someone who don’t understand why some of us call ourselves African Americans. We do it for the same reason why some whites call themselves Irish, Italian, Russian and German - it’s a pride thing. It has absolutely nothing to do with race or a disrepect of another person’s race.

No! Do they care that two white officers(Charlotte) were shot by a black guy? If they do, I sure didn’t hear about their concern. Bill Cosby makes sense when he talks! I have been discriminated numerous times because I’m white! Can it be? God Bless to all!

What is good for Imus should be good for everyone . . that goes for rappers, too. You want equality then lets everybody be treated equal. If Imus must go then so should the degrading rappers. I for one don’t think Imus should have lost his job. He apologized and if the “Rev. Sharpton and the “Rev” Jesse Jackson were as they represent themselves to be “Revs” then they would be forgiving after all he did apologize over and over. He should be given a chance to clean up his act. And Sharpton and Jackson should quit jumping the gun in every black/white situation, i.e., the Duke Lacrosse. Just as there are a lot of innocent people who go to jail, there are a lot of guilty ones who get off, i.e., Michael Jackson and O. J. Simpson!!! So-o-o, I’m stilling waiting for all those who condemned the Duke Lacrosse players to apologize. I never thought they were guilty from the get go!!

How about helping those people heal that can’t go out into their front yards for fear of being shot, Ms. African princess? How about helping these neighborhoods heal, Ms. African princess.

It’s amazing that some of you are asking for justice with the Duke Lacrosse team when african americans have been experiencing this for years. And for the record, the duke lacrosse story initially was buried in the back of sports pages before African Americans became outraged at the fact. Let it be a water bottle of a black QB and he’s lambasted with the term thug and bad role model on the front of news papers around the country. Trick Water bottle or potential rape? Which is the more important issue? You decide.

I wish people would get off the duke lacrosse issue. There have been too many black men in the same situation where a white woman was the accuser and the media protrayed the accused as uncivilized, beast, thugs etc…. Everything “black” to the media is bad and ugly and “white is always right.” Welcome, Duke Lacrosse, to the world of the average black man where you are guilty until proven innocent. The girl was wrong, i never fully believed her story, but then again white women have been wrongfully accusing our black men of the same heinous crimes for years. the only difference has been the lacrosse players were able to afford real attorney’s and not court appointed ones. The players will live as do the many brothers behind bars strictly due to the lies told by the so called pure “love them some black men” white women. It’s funny how white people always see “America” through rose colored glasses until their lives are touched through injustice. Wake up white people. The lacrosse issue isn’t a big deal to black people because we see injustice in action on a minute by minute basis day in and day out.

I’ll nutshell this for anyone who is GENUINELY still confused. What we have at this point in this country is the negro version of sharia law. Boiled down this means that the White race is allowed to say or speak about only what negro’s have OK’d. Period. Negro behavior, speech, etc, is OFF LIMITS. This began being established during the 80’s and has reached full fruition. During that decade, any White who disagreed with any negro about anything was labled a racist. This is eerily similar to what muslim’s are beginning to establish in our country right now. “I have a dream”? Comical. The driving force behind their “proud” behavior is a combination of two child-like mental states: “I want to have my cake and eat it too” (in other words, no consequences for my behavior), and “two wrongs make a right” (what you did was wrong!!-now I get to do it). We need to immediately stop indulging this idiocy and simply start ignoring. You can lead a horse to water…

Folks, let’s stop comparing hip hop lyrics that can be controlled by radio stations and responsible adults to irrational, spur of the moment, hate filled thoughts being broadcast on AmeriKKK’a airwaves daily. There is no comparison. You don’t hear those lyrics on terrestrial radio stations but you absolutely hear anti sematic comments like Imus’ quite often. Imus and his producer carried out ignorant dialogue that offended men and women of various ages, races and backgrounds. Imus was not fired because brother Sharpton took him to task. He was fired because of economics; he was fired because public pressure from an influential black voice worked behind the scenes to ensure the right message was sent.
Changing gears for a minute, the Duke situation has been and remains a mess. The kids were acused of rape, which we now know was a falsehood. That does not take away from their very poor, reckless and hurtful judgement. Regardless of how acceptable it is for college kids to drink and party, it is absolutely unacceptable to hire strippers (exploit black women in the process) and drink alcohol on a college campus (or anywhere for that matter, especially when minors are present). Let’s get real, no one deserves to have their lives wrecked by untrue allegations, but when you place yourself in harms way, you have to be prepared for the harsh reality that may result.
Finally, white radio, cable and tv personalities need to cease and desist with the “free speech has been weakened” whining. Free speech is still alive and well. Again, consequences accompany everything we do in life as Americans. The beauty of this country is that you have the freedom (the right) to express yourself through actions and words. The downside of that freedom is called accountability. When you open your mouth in a forum that requires decorum, thought and an appreciation for ALL listeners, the lack of adherence to those qualities could in fact lead to repercussions that aren’t so desirable.
Real talk for real people.

Is Jerry Farwell, Jim Baker the leader of the white community? Do white people pledge allegiance to them. Why do white people think Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson are the figure head for blacks? This is made up by the media and them (Sharpton, Jackson) wanting the entire spotlight.
It appears to me, most white people are incapable of think for themselves and are unable to recognize scammers. Sharpton is a hater and race divider, and Jessie is Jessie. Compare Jesus’s teaching to Sharpton’s actions then you will understand where he really stands. No righteous man would ever try to divide God’s people like this.

“Jill”, the author of this blog misnamed it: Oprah’s not going to LEAD the healing. Stop giving her so much power.
And yes, I’m a Black woman who does NOT use the term “African-American.” Yes, my ancestors came from Africa…500 years ago. As did everyone else’s. But I am a full-blooded Black-American woman. Oprah has been silent on this issue and is a praise hog currently jumping on the bandwagon. But she herself never supports Black women on her show unless she already knows them or they are already in the media.
Hip-hop/rap…all the same: A detriment to Black society, men/women relations, decency and respect for self and others. Imus shoudl’ve gone, but so, too must ALL music execs who produce—and “artists” who “sing”—that mess. STOP IT. Black women—stop participating in that filth and parents, stop buying it. Beyonce, sit your burlesque butt down.
I want the Black men organizations to step up! We haven’t heard one word from them! Kappas, Omegas, Alphas, 100 Black Men, etc. We don’t need more football classis or LeCabaret galas. Spend time with those boys who don’t wear proper fitting clothes, can’t speak proper English, etc. Spend time, money and manpower on THAT. And white people: recognize your guilt in this (you started all the racial divides in this country) and work within YOUR community to address evil when it’s done. Rappers, comedians, Hollywood actors/writers/producers, rock singers, the common everyday man/woman, even myself at times AND Imus are all wrong. Throwing the “rappers do it too” excuse out there is a childish as a sibling whining when he gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar and gets whacked up side the head and being mad because his little sister, who did the same thing, did not get dealt with also. People have been in a process to do something about rap. It has been spoken out against, and protested against. Remember Tipper Gore? Where were you when she decided to campaign against the lyrics used in rap and helped the cause for creating a law to force “Parental Advisory” stickers that are prominent today on CD’s? I listen and like rap and agree that some of the content is somewhat unnecessary, but I didn’t wait until a member of my race (and btw, I’m black)was “whacked” before I made that feeling known. To speak out in defending Imus with that excuse is exactly why the “race” issue will not and can not be dealt with easily. “T** for Tat” is what it was called when I was young. Yeah it was as wrong for black people to cheer when O.J. Simpson was let off as it was when that white jury said the beating Rodney King took was justified. We are BOTH wrong and until we ALL realize that, including myself at times, nothing is going to change as swiftly as I believe it could. We rather go to war, than to solve things any other way because we refuse to see things both ways. It’ the survival of fittest at every level of human existence. Numbers baby, whoever has the most toys win. Life is a rat race, and at any given time any one can act like a rat. Imus, Mel Gibson, Tim Hardaway, John Rocker, Michael Richards, Wesley Snipes, your next door neighboor. YOU are who YOU are. The difference is, there are enough adults with sense to know that we have to co-exist. Life is too short for some and they see nothing good spending their time negotiating and go back to basics and hit “caveman” mode. We all joke at the water cooler, we all have our likes and dislikes, but we do not HAVE to disrespect each other or offend each other in any manner. Movies, rappers, rock artist, movie makers, opera singers, actors, and music videos are artistic expressions that are sold to the public for revenue. They have and will continue to face censorship any time they crossover into the medium Imus “thrived in”- simulcasting daily on both radio and t.v. That’s powerful people, VERY powerful. Look around and tell me how many members of the media/entertainment conglomarate do you see doing that? As powerful as some might want to accuse rap as being, they don’t have it LIKE THAT. And certainly none of them called out some young impressionable prominent educated women in that medium either. I will agree that rappers use of the English lahguage is “tastelss and crass” or whatever term you choose to describe it, SOMETMES. There are rap artist that are very positive too. That still doesen’t excuse what Imus did or rather how powerful “where” it was being done. You can not defend one wrong doing with another. How will we ever get anywhere arguing rappers vs Imus? It’s alot deeper than that people.

Ron, if you’re hearing African American followed by some kind of crime, then you need to get out more or stop the selective listening. For every crime that you hear committed by one African American, there are dozens more who are becoming CEO’s, doctors, lawyers, and every other profession that was denied to us but a few decades ago. You think blacks are the only ones committing crimes? Let’s not even discuss the Barbie Bandits with their slap-on-the-wrist “theft by taking” charge…I still get a laugh over the hypocrisy of THAT one.
I’m actually amused that many of you are in here neck veins bulging and angry. It must really hurt to have so much malcontent and deep seated hate in your hearts. Tell me…what will it be like Monday morning when you go to work and face your minority co-workers? Ah…don’t answer that…it was rhetorical. LOL

I attend college in Atlanta and hear black men and women call themselves (and others) ho’s and b**, and, the supposed big daddy dirty word of them all, the notorious “N” word, all the time. One day I was in the library trying to study next to a table of about 6 blacks (men and women) and their ENTIRE CONVERSATION was riddled with these words. It got so bad I had to move. The hypocrsy is laughable, people. And you wonder why many whites aren’t taking you seriously in the Imus debate/debacle. Get real.

Leave it to “Okrah” to also jump on the bandwagon, and try to cram her 2 cents down our throats. Bad enough that Al & the boys try to control the black folks thinking, and Jesse & the boys just show up at your business and picket until you make a substantial “donation” to the Rainbow Coalition. Imus can say he is sorry, but all he is sorry about is that he said it on national coverage. Im quite sure he said exactly what he was thinking, and felt in his own mind. There is still a very big divide between the whites & blacks in this country, and now dont even get me started about the uncontrolled & illegal migration of hispanics to this country. There are no free rides to be had, but many folks keep looking for “pie in the sky” in America. Im going to stop now, or some of you will start calling me a racist too.

1) Jessie Jackson & Al Sharpton are not PAID to be activists. 2) The Black Journalists Association called for Imus to be fired, not Jackson or Sharpton. 3) Imus went on Al Sharpton’s radio show to make a general apology, not to apologize to Al Sharpton. 4) America has been desensitized, but, its never okay to hurt someone with your words. You cannot un-ring a bell! Once hurtful words are spoken you cannot recall them. Imus may be a good person that said a bad thing, and I bet everyone, whether a so-called shock-hock or not, will be a bit more cautious when they are speaking over the public airwaves. Its not a matter of free speech- its a matter of decency. Imus was an employee and should have used better judgement. I have (3)adult daughters & have never heard them called or referred to a “N.H.H.”. I have (3) adult sons, & have never heard them say that phrase either. In fact, I had never heard that phrase at all, until last week.( I was born and raised in Los Angeles!). I don’t know if its time for healing, or just time people stop insulting each other or groups of people. We ALL need to stay prayerful, and not judgemental….

Jaynicia99, One more thing. I don’t work with minorities. I don’t consider them to be ‘minorities’. They are my co-workers and friends. The point I’m trying to make is that you need to stop looking at yourself as a minority, or a black this or black that. You are a person. Someone’s friend. Somenone’s daughter. Not because you are black, but because of who you are.
If you can’t deal with that, then I’m sorry for you.

I wonder when Queen Oprah is going to show her support for the Duke lacrosse players.
Those young men were victimized by the national media — including the AJC — much more harmfully than the Rutgers basketball team was hurt by Imus.
Of course, by acknowledging its role in empowering the multi-cultural lynch mob that attempted to destroy the Duke lacrosse players, the media would be admitting its own obvious bias against white males.

It is so sad to read some of the comments on here. You all need to wake up…EVERYONE. Something is going on in America…it has nothing to do with words either. It has something to do with the feelings and meaning behind the words. And for those who are ingnorant…read a study…Most of the people who buy the rap music are white suburban teenagers and college !!!! And everyone stop “ASS”uming things…Al Sharpton and Jessee Jackson do not represent African Americans in this country…..Did you see the rally numbers?….40 people showed up and 10 were white people. Just stop stop STOP……something else is going on and everyone needs to wake up before it hits the fan big time!!!

Why does the media, always focus on the negative blacks that commit crimes and violence? Why don’t they ever talk about the thousands of young black people who are going to church? If you don’t believe me then go to World Changes or go to New Birth on any wendsday or Sunday you will see plenty of young black people there who are trying to live positive.Eddie Long sells out the Ga dome every new years eve and easter and is full of young black people who are trying to do good things in the community. Why don’t we ever hear about the thousands of blacks who are going to and graduating from colleges like Morehouse,Spellman,Howard,Hampton and others? Why don’t they ever talk about the thousands of black doctors, lawyers, judges, business men,and everyday 9 to 5’ers I see every morning while I am stuck in traffic? Why don’t they ever talk about the blacks who live on Cascade area,Camp Creek area,Stone mt,and Lithonia area who have nice neighborhoods with hard working black families? Why don’t they talk about artist like India Irie,Jill Scott, kem, musiq soulchild,Anthoney Hamilton,Lyfe, and others who are young blacks who are making uplifting music that does not degrade women or is violent?

I am a white man and I am very pleased that Imus was fired. He was always a despicible person. Howard Stern should also be off the air waves. With that being said, until the black community addresses their issues of single mother households, lack of education, thier music, etc., firing a stupid white person isn’t going to make one bit of difference. Unfortunately, the black community looks to Al and Jesse to be their respresentatives to the world. While they have benefically on occasion, they generally hurt their cause. Until the black community starts to take charge of their own environment, nothing will change except Al and Jesse and their immediately followers getting richer.

I’m with The Duke! Most of Blacks don’t have a clue about their own history. To hear them, the South was filled with Plantations and slaves. Actually, a small percentage of the population had slaves. The Civil War was not begun to free slaves. The North used freeing slaves to defeat the South because they knew if the South did not have slaves on the big plantations that would cause an economic disaster. Abraham Lincoln isn’t your hero. There are a number of his speeches in which he spoke ill of slaves. In other words you blacks were used then just like you are used now to get votes for the Democrats. After the Civil War blacks were given an opportunity to go back to Africa and many did. Those who stayed were given an opportunity to get land. I worked with a decendant of a slave whose family now has several hundred acres in Alabama. So, opportunities have been made available throughout history. As you know there have been blacks who have risen up throughout history and made contributions and been successful. So, how did they do it? I know blacks haven’t always been treated equally, but for God sake you have an edge in eduation(Affirmative Action, special grants, financing for minorities), in housing (special minority financing, etc.) in getting jobs (Affirmative Action). And, all we hear now is whiners complaining how they’ve been treated for years and how they don’t have anything. I guess that is why I live in a $180,000 house and some of the Blacks I worked with live in $400,000 houses. Well, I’m white and I could tell you a number of racist things that have happened to me. For example, just last week I went into The Bombay Company. I was the only customer in the store for 15 minutes and the black sales associate did not even acknowledge my presence. When I was toward the back of the store, I heard someone come and the sales associate said, “Welcome ladies to Bombay. Let me know if I can help you.” Yep, you’re right they were both black. Had this been the reverse there would have been a law suit filed against The Bombay Company (liken that against The Cracker Barrel).

Imus is a jerk, but free speech is more important than him, and he should’ve been punished, but not crucified. there is a very big double standard in race today, and the black community should sincerely care about the next crop of white people that they are cultivating.

Mo:
Other newspapers have reported that the Duke lacrosse players who did hire the stripper had asked for a white stripper. A black stripper showed up with a co-stripper. When she ultimately locked herself in a bathroom with the co-stripper, a few of the lacrosse players felt they were being cheated out of their $800.00 (her fee). It has now been widely reported that the black stripper (whose name is not mentioned by the protectionist, liberal AJC) hurled the first racist slurs toward the white players.
She is not even being prosecuted (yet, clearly she should be) for falsely accusing those guys of a serious crime. But in fact, it was DNA from OTHER people that was found to be on her person and clothing….not that she had any problem with sleeping around, it would appear.
Racism runs in all directions. Black America’s victim mentality, coupled with the idea that it’s ok to operate with this double standard is not acceptable. You’re blind to the truth. This black stripper tried to ruin the lives of these white families. That was an act of pure racial hatred….black on white, not the other way around.

Nappy hair is tightly curled/ coiled hair, no matter who says it and it is not a racist word. Hell, The Today Show’s movie critic, Gene Shalit, and some white folk have nappy/curly hair. Nappy may be offensive to those dumb enough to believe it is an INFERIOR TEXTURE OF HAIR. I am a black woman and I am not, nor have I ever been, offended by that word. The word ho derived from whore (wherever it originated) IS AN EQUAL OPPORTUNITY EMPLOYER to men, women and those in between. Say what you want in private, but free speech is non-existent IN THE MEDIA. Imus should have been fined over the years (and suspended) for saying some of the things he’s said. If that would’ve happened, maybe the indignation/ hysteria over his offensive remarks wouldn’t have cost the networks a loss of advertising dollars or Imus the loss of his job. The Rutgers’ ladies basketball players (NOT THE ENTIRE BLACK COMMUNITY) were targets, not victims. They were the only ones deserving of an apology. What’s ironic is that the black girls appeared to all have straightened hair. The remarks started off as comments about how hard, rough the girls looked with tatoos and what started out as a comment about the attractiveness/ femininity of the ladies snowballed into a presumption about their sexual behavior. It was mean and disciplinary action should have been taken. I think most female basketball players are hard looking, masculine too and it is my right to say so. Sharpton is the KING OF UNPRODUCTIVITY in the black community and he introduced Oprah as a phone in guest on his radio show a few months ago as SOMEONE PROVING THAT NOT ALL BLACK WOMEN ARE HOS. Is that supposed to be a compliment?

I hate this. Imus was stupid for saying what he said, and many, BOTH black AND white, making comments in this blog are just as ignorant, racist, and bigoted. Don’t think our politicians aren’t eating this up.
The more divided our county, the more able politicians are to stay in office without having to do a thing but sit back and watch us implode. Ask yourselves, both Dems and Repubs, what have our politicians done for us these past 20-25 years. Nothing but cause more and more divisions within our country in order to stay in power. As long as we fight among ourselves we are powerless to get rid of these do-nothing scumbags in Washington.

I dont know if the term “nappy headed ho’s” was pertinent to the Rutgers b-ball team, but it is appropriate of the black woman that made the alledged charges against the 3 Duke students. I just saw her for the 1st time on TV, and she is definately a ‘nappy headed ho” I personally think the term needs to be put in the dictionary. Bill Cosby and Oprey Winfrey would be perfect Negroes to lead the post Don Imus Healing; there are many more. Here is why they would be perfect candidates.
I saw Bill Cosby and Toni Braxton on Larry King Live. Both are activist toward examining potential environmental causes of autism as well as research on treatments for autism. Bill Cosby made statements concerning autism. Only God and some Negroes know what he said and actually meant. His message was unintelligible. Toward the end of the show, Larry King said that the public can see what a noble man Bill Cosby is just by what he said. Larry King was obviously speaking over the heads of Negroes.
Every African American child is not a bootlicking, butt licking, buck dancing, bamboozled, half baked, half fried, sissified, punkyfied, pasteurized, homogenized n****. After a night of working with young African Americans who are having problems adjusting to integration, I came home and turned the television to the tonight show, Jay Leno. It happened to be his 50th birthday. In walks the billion dollar lady, Oprey Winfrey with a cake. They cut the cake but did not have napkins to clean the icing from their fingers. The billion dollar lady, Oprey Winfrey licked the icing from the fingers of Jay Leno.
As Larry King might say, these are the perfect candidates based on what they said and did.
White people should show mercy to people of this sort and others; give them a healthy dose of reality.

Does the music industry disrespect women, blacks, whites, gays…yes. But is this the matter at hand? Did Imus comment the way he did because the “rap industry” does it? So much for maturity and responsibility on his part. For those of you who are so damn racist that you’ll back anything as long as it’s white need to open your eyes. as far as politics, if you choose a political party you are hurting this country. we should always just choose the USA, to pick a side limits one’s thinking ,and then, even when the side a person has picked does something clearly awful, they feel like they must defend their side, no matter what, even at the expense of the country, just so no one can see that they made a mistake and have flaws. well we all have damn flaws, so what? don’t choose political sides and let politicians divide our country and then more easily manage their manipulation of us, always do your own thinking, don’t out-source any of it.

What Imus said was stupid. I’m not a fan of his but he was railroaded. The racists in all of this are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. What ruined this teams moment of sun was not was Imus said. Does anyone think any of them listened to Imus or for that matter even knew who he was. Their moment was ruined by those who perpetuated the story and made it bigger than it really was. Jason Witlock got it right.

First of all, Don Imus was just trying to be funny…he’s no racist. Racists aren’t successful, and they don’t run multi-million dollar charities. If you can’t take vulgar jokes, I would suggest you turn off all radios and TVs - vulgarity is everywhere.
As for the Duke men, falsely accused of rape by Crystal Gail Mangum: the one man she identified at every police “line-up”, Brad Ross (who was never indicted, by the way) was NEVER even at the party. Apparently these men were the victims of a crazy peoples delusions (both Crystal Gail Mangum, and the district attorney, Mike Nifong). In no way did these men “bring it upon themselves”, as one of the accused (but never indicted) was never even at the party!
Do I believe Don Imus should have lost his job? I don’t think he had any real “entertainer” talent, he shouldn’t have been on the radio, he should be a used car salesman, telling dirty jokes at the local VFW. With that being said, it’s obvious that Don Imus is talented at running charitable organizations (just think of what he could do for that theoretical VFW!), and I find it ironic that there are young black women that will suffer needlessly because people that can’t take vulgar jokes refuse to turn of their radios and TVs.

I’m sick of hearing about the Duke Lacross players. How about all the people that Project Innocence has cleared in the last few years. Men that were CONVICTED of rape based on the lies of one eyewitness. They’ve spent 15+ years of their lives in prison, and now that DNA has cleared them of the lies told on them, they have to figure out where to pick up the pieces. How come nobody mentions those people???

Repost from gatech: I got the answer for you - check it:

No one is debating the issue at hand. Did anyone even listen to Don Imus’ response to his comments on the Al Sharpton radio show. Sharpton was p** because Imus used Federaly reglated air ways to insult black women. Specifically smart, black, athletic, Women. And women in general! Imus stupidly answered, “I forgot what I was saying, I did n’t know.” The issue is billion dollar corporations are going to be subject to ridicule for endorsing a person who insults black women and refers to women as hos. Rappers do it but they are ignorant and have limited influence and audiences. Plus their music is not heard (unedited) on Federally regulated airways. That being said rappers DO NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DEGRADE WOMEN. Women make the decision to allow themselves to be degraded. Tip Drill by Nelly. No one forced those women to be in that video and have a credit card swiped thorugh her butt crack. If women stop allowing themselves to be degraded then they wont be degraded. Imus knew the consequences of his actions. You cant expect to get a slap on the wrist for that comment. That opens the door for anyone black or white to say whatever they want and cite Imus as they defense. I dont believe Imus is a racist nor was Sharpton out to cutt Imus’ head off, but he was out to cutt the head off of an episode that would allow someone who has dignitaries on his show to refer to collegiate scholars and athletes as Nappy head hoes. Rev’s Sharpton and Jackson forgave Imus but their still are consequences. Sometimes I’m sorry just wont get it.

The Civil Rights leaders need to stop the hypocrisy. They should be picketing outside of Death Row records, and any other record company that sells that demeaning, degrading, violent junk known as rap music. They went after Imus because he deserved it, but it is hypocritical not to go after the rap artists whose lyrics promote abuse, rape and the placing of women as 3rd class citizens. Where are you now Al and Jessie, and whoever else was more than glad to show their face on any and every talk show to blast Imus and demand that he be fired? Could it be that MOST rap aertists are African Americans and Imus was white? I want to hear why you don’t give grief to record companies whose products say much more harmful things about women than Don Imus did. Where did the word “HO” originate?

On this day that we Celebrate Jackie Robinson in baseball, I pose a serious question. Because Al Sharpton and Jessie Jackson are not adequate leaders because of all of their baggage keeps them heavily burdened, who is the next Black Community Leader? I personally don’t believe one will ever be found because you can’t ascend to a leadership role and still have street credibility. The black community is so quick to turn on its leaders because they aren’t black enough. I am glad Imus got fired. What he said was stupid and hurtful to some very nice young ladies. He should have been fired well before that for calling the Vice President a war criminal. Had the executives done their jobs, Imus wouldn’t have been around to offend the nice young ladies of the Rutgers Ladies Basketball team. We need to move society forward past its racial problems. Playing the race card constantly and inconsistantly doesn’t help. Al Sharpton said on his radio show when he interviewed Imus that “nappy” is a racist term. Why wasn’t it racist when Stevie Wonder sang about, “looking back on when I was a nappy headed little boy.” It does not help the situation when there is a double standard over who can use what words. IF a word is bad, it should be bad for everyone.

It is good to know that racism is still alive and well (HAHAHA)— sarcasm here.
Anyway, Imus was bound to lose his job because the advertisers pulled out.
The Duke LaCrosse men were wrongly accused and someone should be punished for that.
And the rappers (better still, the PRODUCERS and RECORD LABELS)should change there tune and stop calling Black women these names. If someone called one of their female relatives a derogatory name, they would be the first ones to want a fight.

To Mike in Woodstock, if you knew anything about the law you would know that a rape victim’s name is not revealed, black or white. Futhermore, the issue here is not about black or white it’s about right and wrong. Any remarks about any race of people is not justified by any one. Imus was wrong and got what he deserved.

Do Oprah and her “homies” really have nothing better to do then “start the healing process” (what a joke)over a comment, that most blacks make on a daily basis anyways, that a radio talk show host made? Why doesn’t Oprah get off her fat black ass and begin the “healing process” for the three white Duke lacrosse student/athletes that were FALESLY ACCUSSED of raping a nasty black stripper? That BLACK WHORE tried to ruine their lives, but Oprah would rather focus on IMUS, then the “real” problem. Oprah is worse then those “race hustling” pieces of S**T Sharpton and Jackson. No wonder blacks are looked down upon by every race in the world as stupid and lazy.

Ed Johnson and famuan are two of the biggest morons to ever walk the planet. You both say no one should apologize to the Duke players! Are you serious?! If ANYONE deserves an apology it is them. A black hooker who was obviously mis-assigned a college party figured she would come up with some scheme to get some money from these apparent rich kids. In doing so, she ruined 3 young college kids lifes and ended 20+ kids dream of playing college lacrosse. She ended 3 careers before they had a chance to start a career. She deserves a life sentence in prison with no chance of parole. Jesse Jackson should go to jail as well, due to his BS backing of her even though he knew nothing about what had happen (which nothing did) or what was involved in the case. All he knew was a black girl was apparently raped by 3 white kids. Everyone knew right away that the 3 white kids from Duke wouldn’t have sex with some black girl hooker. There is a reason why you don’t see a lot of white guys dating black girls…because they’re nappy head hos. Keep up the reverse racism black community, it really makes Atlanta shine. Bring back Imus!

What good will Oprah do? It is a well known fact that many of the rappers, the same rappers who have enjoyed a successful career and millions of dollars using the same and often much worse lyrics, blast Oprah in their songs. The they she is “too white” and she doesn’t promote rap artist or rap music on her shows. Considering this, what good will she do? One of the news stations showed all the lyrics to the words of the song It’s hard Being a Pimp, the song won as Oscar for best song, try listenting to the words of that song. What Imus said pales in comparison to the lyrics of this song, this is just one example. But, we all know the double standards that exist today against white people. The two social pimps Sharpton and Jackson did not have Imus removed, don’t give them this credit, they don’t deserve it, this went way past those two baffoons.

While entertaining my niece and a group of Spelman freshman on Easter Sunday, one of the young men shared with me the Don Imus interview. In listening to various radio talk shows on this subject, it appears that most people have twisted, confused and/or deliberately overlooked the crux of the problem.
First of all, Don Imus personalized his insults by directing his remarks to specific groups of people—Blacks and women. There is a big difference—hip-hop rap music is not personal, it’s general. The subject of his comments were specifcally directed to The Rutgers Girls Basketball Team. By referring to them as nappy-headed indicated race—that’s personal; and hos indiciated women—that’s personal.
Secondly, Don Imus made his statement last Wednesday—he should have been fired LAST WEDNESDAY! What happened to the zero tolerance laws and three-strikes-out rules that so easily apply to black people of the least offense.
Have we become so desensitized as a people that right and wrong is no longer obvious. As adults we need to help preserve the future and integrity of our youth and take the lead in situations where they seem incapable of discernment. While I understand that each generation has their style of music, gangster rap and hip-hop has taken on a life of its own that is morally degrading to women, socially irresponsible to society as a whole and crosses the line of human decency and self respect. In my opinion anyone who considers gangster rap and hiphop art is confused. To me, art is a creative expression of ideas and imagination to produce beauty—not filth or sensationalism. The right to Freedom of Speech was designed to allow free expresssion of ideas and opinions, not personal attacks, insults, or degradation of others.
On the bright side, as someone elegantly pointed out, Don Imus did for us what we couldn’t do for ourselves in the Black community. With the help of bold and courageous leaders, his comments forced this issue to the media’s attention where it can now be dealt with constructively.
Many thanks to The Reverend Sharpton, The Association of Black Journalists, The Reverend Jesse Jackson, Senator Barak Obama, Bruce Gordon and the many others who did not hesitate to call for Don Imus’ immediate firing!

I am appalled at the banter I am reading today, anyone reading this can clearly see that racism and prejudice is an American cancer that is just as alive today as it was 40yrs ago. Everything black is good and everything white is evil? While you’re being sarcastic Mike from Woodstock just think how that statement on the flip side was engraved on the minds and lives of people brought to this country serving as slaves for the last 400yrs? You have ruined my day with that one. Just because the elitist “Duke Lacrosse players” have been given a ‘pass’ does NOT mean by any means that they are NOT guilty it only means they were not proven guilty, I’m sure their fathers paid a pretty penny for that one. EVERYday we are subjected to a media that is partial to the issues of others, while WE are portrayed as the antagonists IF we are mentioned at all. Everything in this country is designed for your benefit except those things that we take and make our own. Why would such a stink have to be made to stop a poisonous snake from spewing his venom? And for those of you concerned about Imus the millionaire, I’m sure he’ll be just fine rotting in the confusion of his evil mind. The pennies he raised during his annual telethon can be substituted, I think I’ll begin working on replacing him today so the children won’t suffer.

Oprah to lead the healing? Get real! I have to deal with black rap and hip-hop artists who want to kill or beat the ‘white man’ or ‘cracker’ every day. I don’t have the people like the Reverends Al ‘anti-semite’ Sharpton and Jesse ‘hymietown’ Jackson to step up and do anything about blacks deadset against whites. Total BS! And since when is ‘nappy-haired’ a racist comment? If any of you people listened to more than just that comment, he was making fun of ‘rap music’ using current events (women’s college basketball). Give me a break, the guy didn’t use his best judgement (even though he has his First Amendment rights) and then the nation needs healing? Come on! So let me finally get this straightened out, blacks can get away with it, but whites are evil for doing the same thing? If its wrong for one, it should be wrong for the other. If Sharpton and Jackson were really for racial unity and EQUALITY, they would be standing up for the Duke Lacrosse players who were the focal point of a scam by a black woman to get money. She gets away with it, gets her education paid for by Jesse Jackson’s charities (even though it was known that she fabricated her story even before Jackson offered it to her) and no one says a word. There is no ‘healing’ for these young men who did absolutely nothing wrong either. Where’s the equality in that?

Regarding Don Imus, He got caught. He’s still rich, so what. He did the black community a favor: Conversations about sexism and racism. What bothers me the most about this whole issue is that, once again, Blacks want to cry victim. Mention racism and sexism and all hell breaks loose. The Black community goes to war. Marches, TV press confrences. Wow. This much energy is could be better spent on marching for bettre schools, healthcare and other issues affecting the black community.
On Duke: So what, they got off. I knew they were innocent form the begining. A few white boys now know what it feels like to innocent but profiled to be guilty. Hell, this has happened to me several times. It’s a part of being a person of color in this society. They get no sympathy from me. They are White ,privilage and Rich. Maybe they should have thought about hiring a White girl for their little party. And Black people who march for this lying stripper should have review the facts before taking to the streets. Again, mention the world Black, female and rape, and all hell breaks out. The stripper has no sympathy from me. They all get what they deserved. And this comment is coming from a Black Man—think about that.

They will be just fine.
While there continues to be innocent people without rich mommys and daddys to pay for expensive lawyers being locked up for years before exoneration. No one seems to care about them. Where are their apologies if you’re so concerned about fair justice?

And to Ted with the double standard, EVERY month is White history month, so what it is acknowledged for 28 days out of a 365 year that we are mindful and prideful of our accomplishments in this society that detests the very fact that we breathe? This is a country that ‘tolerates’ us, has NEVER embraced us. Certain liberties have been ‘taken’ by us to attempt to level out the playing field to provide our children the same opportunities that yours are afforded JUST because they are alive or because your brother-in-law owns the company. The United Negro College fund exists to raise money to assist black students in obtaining quality education, Miss Black America exists to showcase what we feel are our best just as Miss America pageants existed for YEARS before a black woman could even be considered beautiful. Out of 50 women maybe 2 show up in a pageant so we have our own. Yes the black Panthers march and notice they weren’t hiding behind sheets to shield their identities, apples and oranges. It is so interesting to see the disgust as if any priviledge for me takes ANYthing away from you. What’s a crumb from your cake?

Ash, my problem is with your second paragraph “They are White ,privilege and Rich”. This is the racist attitude the black community has for ALL whites, poor rich privileged or whatever. The fact they are white gives you cause for prejudice? What if I said the kids who got shot by the police this weekend have no sympathy from me because “they are black, looked like thugs and are poor”? Absolutely not my opinion but you don’t have a problem justifying injustices based solely on race. The double standard exists and you are a prime example.

I am one of the parents that belive no entertainer, sports player, actor, or rapper should be a role model to my child. Me and my childs mother are their only role models and teachers. Cause i know that nothing is real on tv. It is all entertainment. I don’t make any judements about any group or person for that matter based solely on what i see on tv. I have meet celebrites that seem nice on tv but are A holes in person. I know most if not all they rappers don’t talk like that to the women in their lives. I look at music videos as no different than movies and tv shows. I don’t think every asian person can fight cause i saw a few karate movies. Nor do i think all white people are serial killers cause of the son of sam movie. There are lot worse things in the world that rap music. Rap music has given numerous of young people jobs, and opptunites to start their own business who probably wouldn’t have gotten that chance others wise.

I’m here to keep it real. It’s great that Oprah is hosting a dialogue in on this explosive subject. It’s one that needs to be addressed head on and without being polite. With that said, the MBA in me knows that no matter how many discussions we have on the degradation of our beautiful black women and the use of the “N” word within our culture, it’s never going to stop. We just can’t look at the rappers that are doing this. We have to look at the whole picture. There are several entities to look at. The women with low self esteem that judge there self worth by their anatomy, the record companies that sign the artists, the media outlets that play this material, and in my opinion, the most important element, the consumers that buy it. There is always a prevelent sociological factor that Americans can always find a way to make a profit on, no matter their racial demographic. Here, it is the low self worth by a portion of sisters. We can have all the discussion we want on wheter Imus should have been fired or why rappers can say things that white people can’t. This is a capitilistic country and the bottom line is money. There definitely needs to be discussions on race relations because we have a lot of problems in this country with understanding each other’s perspective. Economics is what got Imus fired. Black people will not buy from advertisers that support racist views. Like it or not, we can speak with our money and corporations know this.

The fact is, Imus made a stupid statement, he has apologized to the ONLY people to who he needed to apoligize, and they have accepted his apology.
Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, and Oprah don’t need to be involved. Why aren’t they involved when Farrakhan says that they need to kill all the white women and babies? There is a double-standard here, and that double-standard is one of the reasons that race relations in this ENTIRE country remain strained.

Let’s do keep it real. The race card has been played so many times by the black community that the ink has been worn off. It’s old and tiresome. I saw a picture of MLK this weekend and the first thing that came to my mind was “your dream is dead”. It’s shameful what Sharpton’s hate speech and race baiting does to America. His objective is to infect a new generation with hate and racism. This blog is evidence of that. If MLK was here today he’d slap Sharpton’s face for setting back racial progress 50 years.

The Don Imus show was one of the very few that I enjoyed watching because he didn’t sugar coat anything and didn’t go out of his way to stroke anyones ego. In an adult society, nothing needs to be sugar coated, everyone is supposed to be mature enough to tune out or turn off anything that is disturbing to them. There must have been a good deal of viewers who watched Don Imus for this to have stirred up such a huge controversy. The last time I checked, we still live in a society where we can watch what we want and not watch what we don’t want. Rap music offends me so I don’t listen to it, it is that simple. Freedom of speech no longer exists in the U.S.A. Right or wrong or sociably acceptable or not, Imus or anyone else has the right to speak as they desire. If this was so bad then the FCC should have censored it before it was put out on the airwaves.

The biggest problem with White America is that they ‘think’ they know black people. You choose to look at the people that the media, run and owned by you chooses to put in front of you to represent us and you automatically think that one person or group of people represents millions. We are a people so brilliant your ancestors got on a ship, sailed, across continents and came to get us to build YOUR country that you stole might I add. I love that we are able to have discussions such as these so we can remind the black people who have forgotten that people like Imus, Mike Richards, Vince, Texmex, Bubba, Mike of Woodstock, and countless others exist! But what I want you all to know is that black people such as myself exist, please know that you will NEVER be able to cloak yourselves and travel in packs like wild dogs as you did years ago terrorizing households, I dare you to try it today, I encourage it even. You speak of “injustice” in your reference to O.J., I say take one for the team. Let’s speak of the many men who are currently jailed for crimes they couldn’t have committed, or the many men who were served justice at the hands of men who look like you and were never afforded trials, or the many men who were given trials and brought before a juries of YOUR peers and said to have been treated fair. It’s hard to play the game someone created around themselves being the victors each and every round. I care not for the confession of a black woman (who in no way represents all black women) who would accept $800 to dance for some little white boys, I just wonder how much her confession cost. How much she’d accept to ensure the creme de la creme could continue on their paths to CEOs and Vice Presidents. Bubba needs help indeed but those were your thoughts LONG before Imus came along. I laugh in the face of those who dare blame “rap music” for this country’s infestation of misogyny. Before we were nappy-headed whoes we were N%r wenches and I KNOW FOR A FACT Tupac didn’t write that lyric!

This was an assasination of Don Imus by people who have been laying in wait for him. It saddens me to think that certain people in this world have nothing more to do than to create havoc on others lives and drive them to ruin. For those who have followed Don Imus know that Imus and Sharpton have been at odds for years, not over race issues but over difference of views. Sharpton and Jesse jackson are both self appointed spokesmen for the black race and both seem to prosper very well in their self appointed jobs. I don’t always agree with their views but I accept them as theirs and go on. I don’t like Spike Lee, I think he is a racist from the word go and won’t watch anything he produces, that is my right. Maybe I should sue him for refering to white people as crackers. I also don’t like the KKK, so I don’t watch anything that deals with them either. Illegal immigrants from mainly Mexico is where sharpton and jackson should spend more of their energy if they have the kind of power that they seem to. It is driving americans out of work and causing a rise in medical costs here in america. There, I am done.

Some of you keep talking about there is no more freedom of speech? Don Imus was not arrested or put to death for what he said. You can say whatever you want in this country, but you also have to take responsibilty for your words and whatever actions may follow. The advertisers got him fired. Money talks, bulls**t walks. With that said, to the White parents, your children purchase 80% of rap music, so if you want rappers to clean it up or go away all together, tell your kids to stop purchasing the music. End of discussion.

None of last week’s events were really about Imus. This is about a larger problem, people finally getting fed up with people who think they can do whatever they want, say whatever they want and NEVER face any consequences. This is not the last of incidents of this sort. I guarantee you half the people riled up about this incident had NEVER even heard Imus’ name before this. So now, you all say you have a victim, okay, let’s count it 1 to 50 million. People are finally tired of yielding to the ‘white of way.’

To Ted: I hope that you will not be offended by my response. To answer your first question: Black History Month was started as a way to interject the contributions of your fellow Americans, who for the most part are ignored in our U.S. History classes. Tell me, Ted. What did you learn about black Americans or any other race in your history class? I know for me what I learned was that my ancestors were slaves. Then the Civil War happened and then they were free. I see why some people have a derogatory opinion about us. As for the United Negro College Fund, it was set up to address the funding inequities in educational resources for African-Americans. It was started in 1944 during a time when blacks weren’t admitted to most colleges and universities. It’s creation was a response to a need. As for the White College Fund, the UNCF isn’t just for black people. It’s open to all races. You can use the money on any college or university that you choose. Miss Black America was created because of the underrepresentation of black women in the Miss America contest. Once again, you have cited something that was created as a response to racism on the part of your white counterparts. Finally, the Black Panthers were created to defend themselves against the racist police officers who they encountered. They got started as a self-defense group, not the same as the KKK. The KKK were founded to terrorize and kill anyone who wasn’t white. The Black Panthers are still a self-defense/civil rights group. Some people on here complain that blacks don’t ever do anything for themselves. That’s not true. The things that you listed are just that- blacks doing for themselves. Now we’re being criticized for doing for ourselves. Now, we’re accused of not being American enough. Let me get this straight. These groups that have been in operation for 20-40+ years should just fold because you feel insulted by their existence?!
As for the Duke lacrosse players, I’m sure that they will get plenty of airtime in the upcoming weeks. They just did 60 Minutes. They should sue the county. They should also consider themselves fortunate to have avoided court & jail time. This morning on the Today show, Mr. Reade Seligmann stated such quite eloquently the failure of the justice system. He even went on to mention the working class blacks who are locked up on false allegations. They are owed an apology. It’s only fair that those in the media who condemned them give their humblest apologies. If they were black, we would expect the white media to apologize.
To The Duke: BET was created as a response to a lack of minorities on the big networks. Just take a look at most of the television programs on the major networks. Granted, there are shows centered around minorities. However, they don’t last very long. Soem fans view them as just that- black/Hispanic shows. They feel that they won’t be able to relate to them. They don’t see it as an American show. They put the hyphen in front of American.

I have read quite a few comments and it seems that many are not relevent to the subject matter. I believe Oprah is well respected amongst both blacks and whites. As a black American women, I have confidence in her or someone like Bill Cosby, who has tried to bring about a POSTIVE change for not just blacks put people in general. The Imus situation was a wake-up call for everyone and we need to at least try to clean this mess up for our children because these little boys and girls will grow-up to be men and woumen. Now, to get off the subject, what happened to the Duke players was truly unfortunate. The truth came to light but these same scenarios play out everyday, many we don’t hear about on 20/20 or 60 minutes where innocent black men and in this particular case, white men get falsely accused. Somebody prayed for theses boys and God saw fit to answer and truth is now out. Let’s all move on and try to contribute some postive things to our society and quit getting stuck on what happened in the past.

Let’s face it kids….there is prejudice in the very soul of every person alive; no color exempt… the people who refer to ‘understanding’ have the ‘secret’.. very few ever have a ‘role-model’ to overcome prejudice and racism (from every ethnic background)…until we teach the up and coming, as well as the youth of today, how to take the time to UNDERSTAND others, by researching, reading, communicating and genuinely looking into the WHOLE picture, we will never progress…we can throw all the rocks you want, evidenced by this blog…but, only a true path to real understanding and acceptance will heal…I fear some of this actually do not want it..!!!! and the ever so ‘self-serving’ Oprah only exists to clould it more to fill those hip pockets…she has no real interests otherwise except ego, just like all her peers on every side of every color that continue to strap the ‘ball and chain’ on every color of society… is it not strange that we do not ever run across a course or opportunity in any education system that teaches understanding…the trivial ‘history’ courses do not really touch on that… so, does anyone have the answer…or just dial in Oprah and continue to contribute to the problem and continue to throw those easy stones as you have above…

I suggest if Rev. Jackson and Al Sharpton REALLY want to protect their race, they hire some thugs to start beating/killing the hundreds of thousands of criminal Black males that haunt their “community”.
Why do you think crime is lower in White neighborhoods? Because will personally take care of problems, especially if the police can not or refuse to do so.

Most Black criminals are stupid, but they’re not THAT stupid to risk their lives by trying to steal from White people in their homes.
Whites, more often than Blacks (especially poor, elderly Black women), have a gun in the house, and WILL use it.
If you want to see a reduction in the crime rate, then go ahead and start sending young, untrained, Black men to try “home invasions” in places like Paulding County.
The young Black men will be shot down like deer in season.

you know, mikey, you are a real true embarassment to your race… you must have a hint of intelligence..enough to at least type a few words in or at least to tell someone else to type them in for you…why don’t you channel what you do have into something positive… I know that you are not representative of your race.. why do you hate being black…do you not have any respect for your black brethen.. your insecurity and hate at being a black man comes through so clear.. I have never related to anyone black that hates their own race as you.. every race has their trash, but you really muddy up the water… most every black I know, like those of any other color are for the most part decent, with all of our differing views, but not so insecure of their skin.. we all have our dislikes and beliefs, but I for one, know that you do not even register at the bottom of the ladder in your group.. look in the mirror and find something to like about yourself…

Basically everyone agrees that the words uttered were senseless, hurtful, uncalled for and just plain ol’ ignorant. I hate that in this world today we still see each other’s color over who they are as people. Reading all of the comments posted I just have one over whelming thought. Why can Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton, Rep. Rangle, and the entire leadership of the Democratic Party demand that people get fired. (I.e. Duke staff…Imus…who will be next?) What right do they have? Imus’s stupidity is called freedom of speech. Not policed by the government or any of its political leaders. (Did I just call these clown’s leaders?) You can say what you want. Don’t get me wrong, you can also pay the price. Imus would have been canned without anyone calling for him to be fired. Loss of sponsorship hits the pockets networks (as others have pointed out). We are sadly spending way too much time on this stupidity (including me). Let’s fight the real battle, the news media who give power to the most extreme leftist out there. How can we give such power to the likes of men who have used derogatory terms toward other ethnic groups? Greeks, oh wait…maybe that was toward people who are gay since the term Al used was “Greek homos”, “white interlopers” and Jews (Hey Jessie is “Hymies” a PC term?) (If you don’t believe they did it, look it up) Are we saying it’s OK to insult people as long as they aren’t the same ethnic group as Al Sharpton. I know that there are a great many good people of all races and religions who believe racist remarks toward any group are NOT acceptable. Yet our Democratic candidates will be looking for the support of these men in their race for President. Is this OK? I guess Hillary and Obama can forgive such lazy words…that is really big of them. Hey Al, go after the rap stars that insult black women and make millions doing it. Tell them that women aren’t “b***” or “hos” they are our mothers, sisters and daughters! Integrity shouldn’t be convenient and only used when it suits someone’s political agenda.

well, mikey, you are not educated.. that is a given.. as to money..probably only stolen or a handout..a problem to the white or other color races..NO..you are more of a problem to you own race with the spouting off that you do… have not heard a lot of support from your race here this morning… just the point, people like you are not problems to your ‘so-called’ enemy..only to yourself and those like you.. your race has people far beyond the level of decency that you display.. yep, you are definitely the Sharpton side, not the King side… pity..

mikey…every answer that you have given today confirms every statement that I have related to you concerning you.. apparently you are such a raged and insecure person, that you cannot even follow your previous emails and your statements… if you could only turn this hate for yourself and those around you into something positive and take the opportunity to REALLY know someone who is decent, I think that you would have a chance… and, for the record, I do not think that you know ANYTHING about Dr. King… you have not learned anything there… I wish you the very best..I know there is good in EVERYONE.. I hope that one day you will awake and find it within yourself and make your Mother really proud of you… she deserves that for all that she went through to put you into this world… you are a human first, mikey, and from there it is choice… we ALL need to UNDERSTAND each other better, but we have to make a right step in that direction to get it turned around… leave the self hate and insecurities out of it and be positive…

Laura, there are many people in the Black community, including Al and Jessie, that have called for rappers to stop using degrading terminology in their songs. People in the Black comunity have been calling for this since 1993 when rap took a wrong turn. But of course this does not get as much media coverage. Why? Because that shows the Black community trying to do something positive and that doesn’t get a much coverage as the negative. Not everybody in the Black community look up to Jessie and Al, let’s get that straight. This Don Imus thing got so much coverage because it is another chance to show Black people pulling the race card. I wish people would stop looking at media coverage that has to do with Black people and thinking that is how the majority feels. NO, IT’S NOT! Granted, Don Imus did say some stupid things, but I don’t feel his career should have been destroyed. I thought the 2 week suspension was enough.

Bottom line…black is NOT better than white. White is NOT better than black. Every one just needs to get over it and shut Jessie, Al, and Oprah off. Imus made a mistake in making an offhand comment. He did not commit a murder (although Al and Jessie would like to portray that he did). He apologized, they accepted, END IT ! Stop giving all these troublemakers the credibility of listening to them. They claim to be men of God. I know men of God, I know God’s word. This ain’t it. There is nothing in God’s word that upholds this kind of behavior from ANY of them.

I am torn over whether CBS did the right thing in firing Don Imus. If the corporation had fired him immediately, it would have been the right thing for the right reason. However, he was not fired until sponsors began to withdraw advertisements which impacted their bottom line. The power of money is at the center of almost every decision made around this, the Duke incident, and most other highly controversial issue (what do you think political lobbyists are and do?). The Duke players did something. We may never know what that was now. But something happened. Now that no charges are being issued – they can all play the innocent victims (guilty or not) until their last dying days. Maybe years later we’ll hear the real story.
I agree we should stop calling ourselves African American. If we were born in the United States or within one of its territories while a parent(s) served on a US military base overseas, we are an American. Being called Black vs Brown is irrelevant. If you care about justice, right/wrong and “fairness” – then you look beyond color.
Oprah, Jesse and Al Sharpton provide a voice via the media because they get the attention in a world that very few minorities have access to unless they have big bucks. Just the fact their names are mentioned makes the media jump – right or wrong. Oprah lost her way long ago and every now and then she tries to come and visit by doing shows like the one planned today. Observe how the media has advertised the show. She will have millions tuning in and using their TiVos. As far as rappers are concerned, the louder and more vulgar, the more money earned. The producers and record label owners love every trip to the bank. Otherwise, why would anyone condone someone like Snoop Dogg? Yet, he is adored (in public) by corporate executives who seek him out to endorse their products to influence the young consumers. Do these executives care whether the consumer is black or white? No, way. They just want to see the “green”. So attacking the rappers is misplacing our energy. We are responsible adults and need to direct our attention away from the artist and towards their employers just as was done in the Imus incident.
Yes, we need to also call out all those females who sell their soles to gyrate nearly naked to be seen by their grandparents, mothers, fathers, little sisters and brother, pastors – and think it’s “all good”. Who would want any of these women as their mother, wife or girlfriend? And it doesn’t matter whether they are black, white, or latino. They are all a disgrace to themselves and represent no one but themselves. We need to stop generalizing.

I would like to comment on the Don Imus case…..Personally, I agree wholeheartley regarding the outcome of him being fired. I don’t want my rax dollars supporting ANY Garbage, rather it is music or TV. It’s all degrading and unexceptable!
Also, my mother always told me two things: 1. It’s better to be seen than heard 2. Think before you speak
