Chamblee adds to Atlanta’s roads of confusion

Chamblee has a gift for the region, as it celebrates its 100th birthday this month: another street named Peachtree.
Oh. You shouldn’t have.
In a metro area with no fewer than 32 roads with variations of Peachtree in the name, Chamblee’s decision to rename Peachtree Industrial Boulevard doesn’t actually add a new Peachtree to the mix. The newly dubbed Peachtree Boulevard — Ga. 141 as it slices through the north DeKalb County city — just adds to the confusion.
For those trying to follow along at home (sans GPS), the confusion comes because the same road is known as Peachtree Road as it stretches south into Fulton County. At the Doraville city line and off
I-285, it returns to Peachtree Industrial Boulevard.
At least, that’s the name until Gwinnett County, where it becomes Peachtree Parkway.
“If you are trying to give somebody directions, it can become confusing,” said Mike Healy, manager of the Atlanta metro area for AAA Auto Club South. “If they don’t know whether it’s Peachtree Street, Road, northeast or southeast, tourists can end up in some strange places.”
Chamblee’s motivation is not to cause more motorist double takes, but to shed its blue-collar past.
The city wants to eventually turn the six-lane highway into a boulevard lined with a walking and bike path and covered with a tree canopy (peach trees aren’t shade trees and won’t be planted).
The change leaves Chamblee with plenty of other Peachtree offerings in the city’s 3 square miles: roads named North Peachtree, New Peachtree, Old Peachtree and old-fashioned Peachtree. A spur, known as Peachtree Industrial Court, also remains.
“Welcome to Chamblee, where you are in the Peachtree Triangle,” said Chamblee City Manager Kathy Brannon. “You can’t get out of it.”
