Jeff Cantin (center) applauds along with Chief George Turner (right) after the interchange sign was unveiled Thursday, June 13, 2013. The Atlanta Police Department unveiled a memorial sign at its headquarters Thursday dedicated to an officer killed in the line of duty last January. Senior Police Officer Gail Thomas, a 15-year veteran, died when a drunk driver slammed into her while she was helping another officer with a car wreck on the Brookwood Interchange ramp. She had just gotten out of her patrol car when she was hit, according to reports. "We hope that this will bring us some additional closure," said Lieutenant Jeff Cantin, Thomas's supervisor. "Between this and the conviction earlier of the person who took her from us, we're happy."Chasity Jones, 22, of Stone Mountain, was convicted on charges of vehicular homicide and failure to obey the directions of an officer and will serve a 16-year jail sentence.
The sign will be placed below the Exit 251 sign on I-75 that stands about 40 feet south of where Thomas was killed.
Thomas' daughter, Jasmine Sherman, attended the ceremony. She has just graduated from college and said she's thankful for everybody who has been so supportive of her since her mother's death.
"I thank God everyday for everybody I have; the mother I had," she said. "I thank God every day for it." JOHN SPINK/JSPINK@AJC.COM

STOLEN CAR SCARE--May 30, 2013 Atlanta: Kory Griffin (left) holds son, Jarren Griffin as Atlanta police investigator, A. Allen interviews Jarren's mother, Hilary Grotewald in the CVS parking lot at 2555 Bolton Road. Hilary Grotewald was taking her son to pre-K when she stopped at the Racetrac station on Marietta Boulevard in northwest Atlanta just before 8 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013 to put air in a tire. That’s when Grotewald’s morning went from routine to a mother’s worst nightmare as a car thief jumped into her sport utility vehicle. “I was getting air in my tire and I felt the car start to move,” Grotewald told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It thought I forgot to put it in park, and I realized it was going too fast for that, so when I looked up, there was someone in the driver’s seat and I realized it was being stolen.” The thief pulled into the parking lot of a nearby CVS pharmacy and abandoned the vehicle and child. “Luckily, I think he just wanted my purse and my cell phone so he took all of that and ran off,” Grotewald said, adding that her son was okay, “just really scared.” Atlanta police spokeswoman Kim Jones said witnesses described the suspect as a black male wearing a gray hat and carrying a gray backpack. He was last seen running east on Marietta Boulevard toward LaDawn Lane. JOHN SPINK / JSPINK@AJC.COM
