Will Wal-Mart's low soft drink prices go away?
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Will Wal-Mart's deep rollbacks of soft drink prices go away soon? Stifel Nicolaus analyst Mark Swartzberg said he is getting mixed signals about the $5 prices for 24-packs that appeared earlier this year. But he says it is "increasingly likely" that the world's largest retailer will reverse its price cuts on Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Dr Pepper. Some stores are lifting 24-packs to the $6 level now that July 4th has passed, Swartzberg wrote in a note to investors today.
"Coke, Pepsi, and Dr Pepper Snapple are part of a larger group of vendors frustrated with Wal-Mart’s practices" of dropping prices dramatically, Swartzberg wrote, citing "vendor agitation" as one of the catalysts to last week’s management changes at Wal-Mart. Soft drink companies "have consistently insisted that current levels of promotions may boost near-term volumes but are unhealthy to long-term revenue and profits for all in the value chain," Swartzberg wrote.
