Timber industry suffered in 09

The recession continued to hammer the pulp, paper and sawmill industries across the South last year.
Pulp and paper mill production was down 4.5 percent, according to Forest2Market, a Charlotte-based company that tracks the industry. Sawmill production fell a whopping 21.3 percent, after declining by 23 percent in 2008.
Prices too dropped. Pine saw timber, for example, dropped 12 percent from 2008, Forest2Market reports.
The South’s embrace of the biomass industry – trees or wood scraps turned into heat or electricity – proved to be the wood industry’s sole bright spot, rising 3.6 percent.
