CHICAGO — Business software provider SPSS Inc. said Wednesday the waiting period for an antitrust inquiry has expired, clearing one of the hurdles to its purchase by IBM Corp. for $1.2 billion.

The completion of the acquisition is still subject to the approval of shareholders and other conditions. Shareholders are set to vote on the deal on Oct. 2.

SPSS, which makes analytic software, said shareholders of record on Aug. 31 will be able to participate in the meeting, to be held in Chicago.

SPSS shares were unchanged in Wednesday trading at $49.89. IBM shares fell 40 cents to close at $116.76.
