Southern Co. may get $18 billion from feds for new nuke plants

Southern Company is among four companies that have been identified as a likely recipient of an $18.5 billion loan from the U.S. Energy Department to build new nuclear power plants.

Also identified were companies in Maryland, Texas and South Carolina, officials said.

Southern Company, the parent company of local utility Georgia Power, plans to build two new reactors at its Vogtle power plant near Waynesboro.
