Some Delta flights to, from Tokyo canceled

Delta Air Lines canceled nearly half its flights to and from Tokyo Friday because of the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, according to a news release from the airline.

Runway and facility closures at Tokyo’s Narita and Haneda airports triggered the cancellation of 29 flights, Delta said. Delta operates close to 60 flights to and from Narita and Haneda, including intra-Asia flights, a spokeswoman said. A flight from Atlanta to Tokyo is still scheduled to depart Friday, as are other U.S. departures, the spokeswoman said.

Delta has about 1,200 employees in Japan and has gotten “no reports of injuries to customers or employees at any Delta facility in Japan,” the release said.

Delta officials in the U.S. are “in contact with major employee and operational bases in Japan and working to confirm that all employees and customers are safe,” according to the release.
