The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Atlanta-based John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods has agreed to pay $350,000 in penalties for violations of the Clean Water Act, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Justice Department said Monday.

The real estate company has agreed to comply with stormwater regulations at its construction sites, the EPA said.

John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods of the Carolinas Inc. has agreed to the settlement as well, the EPA said.

The EPA and Justice Department had accused the companies of not securing necessary environmental permits until after construction began or not getting the permits at all. Other violations included not curbing pollutants such as silt and debris, in stormwater runoff, the EPA said.

The federal complaints came after reviewing documents that the companies submitted, the EPA said. Regulators also did site inspections.

Besides improving their environmental programs, the settlement also requires the companies to have improved pollution plans for each construction site and to increase site inspections, the EPA said.
