Delta Air Lines customers can now book flights directly from the carrier’s Facebook page, using what Delta calls a “social media ticket window.”

Atlanta-based Delta said any of Facebook’s 500 million users can use the page to book without having to navigate to delta.com, where the airline sells 19 million of its 160 million annual reservations. There is no extra booking charge, Delta said.

The airline plans to eventually expand the service to other websites, and also to allow booking within Delta online banner advertisements.

“Our customers are spending more time online and are looking for new ways to connect with us,” said Bob Kupbens, Delta’s vice president of eCommerce. “We’re now delivering technology where our customers are.”

Delta said Facebook is used by more customers while in flight than any other website, according to the company that provides the service, making it a “ natural launching point” for the initiative.

The ticket window will allow Facebook users to more easily share information when planning itineraries, the company said, and will help build Delta’s brand awareness and customer engagement.

Kupbens said “Unlocking the full power of social media and mobile apps is the next step for Delta.”

The airline redesigned its home page at delta.com and it plans to launch a new iPhone application allowing customers to check-in for flights, monitor flight status and review SkyMiles account balances, among other options. Future releases of the app will allow customers to book flights and choose seats.
