Blog growth: Is there a limit?

In the time you clicked the link to call this up, two more blogs were created. That’s right, two blogs start somewhere every second. That’s about 175,000 new blogs a day.

Dave Sifry, CEO and founder of Technorati, the search engine for blogs, issued another of his State of the Blogosphere reports that documents, to no one’s surprise, that the growth of blogs is incredible.

Technorati, Sifri says, tracks more than 50 million blogs, filtering a massive amount of known spammers, or “splogs.”

The blogosphere is 100 times larger than it was three years ago. It doubles in size every 200 days.

Sifry points out that 11 of the top 90 media online sources are blogs.

Can this explosive growth keep up?

Sifry writes: “Frankly, I can’t possibly imagine it continuing to grow at this pace — after all, there are only so many human beings in the world! It has to slow down.”

What do you think?

I think that blogs are going to continue to see growth, explosive growth, and I also think that bloggers themselves have only just begun to talk.

We need to talk. We need to read. Talking…Reading….see where this is going?

I dont want to give anything away, because we have to respect the efforts of the quint-quadrillion blogs that are already in cyberspace, but there’s this one blog, where the guy types with his feet and plays bongos with his hands. He has this web cam and it really is unbelievable. I think that if more bloggers can come up with these kinds of ingenious acts and then infuse the blog world with variety like that, then even more blogs will mushroom and there’ll be more growth.

Blogging is not as easy as it looks. Many have failed. I even once tried to blog, but my wife stopped me, she always does.

But, I’m trying to figure a lie to tell my wife that she’ll let me out of the house, and then I’ll go to a computer bar, and man I’m going to blog all day long.

Lets see, a good foolproof lie….get the car fixed!!!! Yes! that’s it. But first I have to get past her, cause whenever she sees me, she hands me a broom or a mop and points at the bathrooms and yells. I have to plan my trips to the refrigerator during football games so that I can sneak past her.

My wife spelunks in refrigerators. Once she wanted to rescue a tuna caserole which had fallen into some unreachable crevice. So I tied a rope around her and she climbed in. “Dont look down, dear!”, I cautioned, but she didn’t listen. It took four maytag repairmen to extricate her.

Gotta go. Here she comes.

We humans are flighty with our projects — what seems like a fantastic new venture one day seems like a mistake the next. Perhaps what should be counted isn’t the total number of blogs but the number of active blogs. Seems like every time I go to Blogger, Typepad, Livejournal, etc. and try to find some new things to read, I find more sites that were last updated in 2004 than in the past week. I’ve created and abandoned a couple of projects in the time that I’ve been “blogging” (since 1996! We called it “online journalling” back then. I still have trouble thinking of myself as a “blogger”).

I can certainly imagine the blog world continuing to quickly double in size, but I can also imagine a lot of those shiny new blogs being updated only once or twice before being abandoned.
