Diners looking for downtown restaurant Thrive should have a better chance of finding it now.
The eatery, which serves everything from burgers to sushi, has wrapped a 110-foot banner around scaffolding that has enveloped it since the March 14 tornado. The banner, which is about 7 feet tall, displays pictures of the restaurant's interior and spells out "We're Open" in giant letters.
The restaurant took the step after months of customer complaints that they couldn't find the eatery, which is on the bottom floor of Centennial Tower at the corner of Marietta and Spring streets. Manager Orion Stavre said business is off more than 50 percent.
Diners also said they thought the restaurant was closed or under construction, he said.
"I think this is going to make a big difference," Stavre said.
Centennial Tower was one of the buildings hit hardest by the storm. Glass was knocked out, and rows of windows were cracked. Officials put up the scaffolding to protect pedestrians from the threat of falling glass and for repair work.
The scaffolding will be taken down in October, Stavre said. Centennial Tower officials helped with the banner.
Making sure diners know Thrive is open is especially crucial because of downtown restaurant week, which begins Monday. Downtown restaurants are hoping the event, which allows visitors to enjoy a meal for $25 at participating eateries, will bring back diners who have stayed away from the area because of the storm.
Several restaurants complained that business dropped after the storm because of blocked roads and warnings to stay away from downtown. They say some metro Atlantans have not returned because they think the area is difficult to get to, especially with the ongoing I-75/85 resurfacing.
