WHAT IS IT?

The new Fortson Library in Hampton will replace the old Fortson Library, which has served the city since 1974. Located on McDonough Street and financed by SPLOST III revenues, the new library will be considerably bigger than its predecessor with 15,000 square feet, said Roy Clack, the county's SPLOST capital projects director. The added space will allow for more room for reading and computer use.

The $2.8 million project sits on 3 acres and will boast a brick facade to resemble the city's old train station and better fit in with its surroundings.

WHAT IMPACT WILL IT HAVE?

The amenities of the new library will provide more educational and family-friendly opportunities for city residents.

"It's just going to really add a lot to our community," Mayor R.W. Coley said. "We're all excited about it."

WHEN WILL IT BE DONE?

Construction on the new Fortson Library is already under way. The project should be completed in a few months.
