Alpharetta-based Radiant Systems said Monday it paid $30.85 million for an Austrian company that makes devices for ordering food wirelessly at restaurants and other locations.

Orderman manufactures "point-of-sale" equipment that servers use to streamline the ordering and purchasing of food at restaurants, stadiums and resorts. Instead of scrawling orders on paper, servers input data on the mobile devices.

About 50,000 have been sold to more than 20,000 restaurants in 45 countries, the companies said in a news release.

"They've really created the market," Radiant Chief Financial Officer Mark Haidet said.

Radiant produces its own point-of-sale terminals, often used at the counters of restaurants such as Chick-fil-A, but they aren't wireless.

Haidet said the purchase of Orderman will be a "strong accelerator" for Radiant's business overseas.

He said the company also hopes to expand the sales of wireless devices in the United States.

In a release, Orderman Chief Executive Alois Eisl said: "We are pleased to join Radiant Systems in leading the charge for mobile hand-held device adoption in the retail and hospitality industries not only in Europe, but also in the United States and the rest of the world."

Radiant earned $11.8 million on $253.2 million in sales last year, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing.
