Sandy Springs rejects Perimeter area project

The Sandy Springs City Council on Tuesday rejected a redevelopment proposed for the Perimeter area that would have added more than 850 cars an hour to Glenridge Drive at peak traffic hours.

The project would have replaced the 1960s-era Lakeside office complex with a mix of apartments, offices, retail shops and an eight-story hotel.

The 26-acre site is on the east side of Glenridge Drive, across Ga. 400 from the landmark King and Queen office towers at Concourse.

Developer De Little, of Atlanta-based Greenstone Properties, argued the intersection improvements proposed as part of the development would improve traffic flow.

Council members rejected the argument.

Councilman Tibby DeJulio said he'd received more than 200 e-mails from constituents relating to the project — all opposed.

"[Adding] 10,000 to 12,000 cars is unconscionable," he said of Glenridge Drive, a road that already has 21,000 cars a day. "This project is too dense, too much traffic. This is not the place for it."
