Beyond the usual this year, the 75,000-square-foot Cobb Galleria Centre space is turning green, showcasing everything from organic cotton clothing to organic juice boxes to wooden toys.

Jessica Hartschorn, senior lifestyle editor of American Baby magazine, organizer of the baby expo, says parents today are more concerned about product safety in response to news reports about lead-laced toys from China and the potentially dangerous chemical BPA found in plastic baby bottles.

Recent studies have linked bisphenol A to possible risks of heart disease and other ailments. Government officials say the levels of exposure to BPA — used extensively in the lining of food and drink containers, as well as baby bottles — is too low to pose a health risk. But some scientists believe the chemical poses a danger even at very low levels.

Atlanta mom Deidre Jacas, a member of the Atlanta moms group Mocha Moms, says she switched to BPA-free bottles and sippy cups but now wants do more.

She plans to attend the baby expo this weekend to research eco-conscious products.

“I am really looking forward to seeing the organic options and making a decision about what will work for my family,” says Jacas, mom to 13-month-old Joshua.

Still, she won’t be all business.

She signed up her toddler to compete in the baby crawl race.

“He is super fast!” she boasts.
