Internet access provider EarthLink Inc., which trimmed its payroll by about 900 jobs a year ago, has told some employees it plans to eliminate their jobs soon.

“Less than 60” employees of the Atlanta-based company at various locations were told their jobs will be eliminated in the next four months, the company said in a statement.

“EarthLink continues to make every effort to keep costs in line with revenue as we evaluate potential future opportunities for our company,” the statement said.

When the company reported its quarterly earnings in July, it said revenues had declined compared with the same period in 2007 but that earnings per share had gone from a loss to a profit of 48 cents a share.

It said it had decreased operations and customer service expenses by 44 percent and sales and marketing costs by 66 percent, related to its new strategy of focusing on longer-term customers.
