White Provision project on Howell Mill nearly done

Redevelopment of the White Provision building, an industrial Gothic edifice at Howell Mill Road and 14th Street, will be finished by Labor Day, according to one of the development partners, Mike Millett.

Seven stores are expected to move in before year’s end, including Knoll, the office furniture company, Millett said.

The oldest part of the White Provision building, seen in this photo during work last year, dates to 1910.

Meanwhile, the new condominium building going up as part of the project should be finished by March. That building will have 95 homes, seven of which are under contract, and retail space. West Egg, the popular eatery on Howell Mill, will be moving into that building.

The oldest part of the White Provision building dates to 1910, and several additions were made until the late 1930s. White Provision was the first large-scale meatpacking facility in the South. Cattle were offloaded from trains there and herded up a ramp to become food.
