A total of about 70 new shopping detours — including luxury retail and distinctly Atlanta gifts — soon will be added to Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, officials announced Friday.
The new shops are part of a major retail makeover designed to give the airport a local, luxury feel, according to Herschel Grangent Jr., media relations manager for the airport.

The shops will include the Panda Veranda gift shop, featuring a live panda Web cam feed directly from Zoo Atlanta, as well as the Georgia Aquarium store stocked with stuffed beluga whales. High-end retailers will include Salvatore Ferragamo, Sean John and Calvin Klein.
Grangent said the total number of shops at the airport will be about 200 — about the same as current numbers. But he said the look and feel of the shopping experience will change dramatically, with the older shops such as the generic T-shirt gift stores phased out in favor of shops you might expect at Lenox Square mall.
The announcement Friday marks an increase of the number of new shops expected at the airport. An earlier announcement said there would be 40.
Grangent said those 40 new shops will represent the first phase of the construction, which begins next month. More stores will be added next year. All stores are slated for completion by the end of 2009, he said.
Although the airport is up against an economic slowdown, he thinks the volume of traffic (89.4 million passengers passed through the airport's gates in 2007) will lead to success.
"We feel that we are such a major player in the aviation industry that we will have enough traffic to drive the sales," Grangent said.
Other shops to open include Reebok, Brooks Brothers, Luxe International, Lacoste, Buckhead Books and Tech Showcase. Beauty and grooming stores such as Lancome Beauty Lounge and Kiehl's also will open, not to mention Harley-Davidson, Mori Luggage & Gifts and Le Sportsac.
