Beijing — Mike Giles has some advice for future trade mission delegates to China: Think twice before you pull out a photo of your cute dogs to show to a bunch of overly enthusiastic school kids here.

Giles, senior vice president of the Georgia Poultry Federation, nearly started a schoolyard riot Thursday at the Tianjin Project Hope Primary School about 75 miles south of Beijing when he did just that.

Part of Georgia's highest-profile trade mission to China to date, Giles and about 20 other delegates on the mission were visiting the school when he decided to show a child a picture he keeps of his pampered pooches, Hobbes and Andi.

Mayhem ensued.

Giles was suddenly surrounded by about 100 screaming children who jumped and grabbed wildly at the photo as an astounded Giles was pushed about the schoolyard.

"It got out of control very quickly," he said. "They acted like it was a precious gem or something."

The children had been the model of decorum before Giles pulled the photo from his pocket. They sang and danced for Georgia First Lady Mary Perdue. They graciously exchanged gifts with the trade representatives.

Teachers later told him that pet dogs are very rare in rural areas of China where people still struggle just to feed themselves. The photo two very cute terriers was bound to cause trouble.

The school's headmaster and teachers quickly restored order, barking a series of stern commands at their charges. Giles gave the photo to the headmaster to post at the school so all of the kids can share it.

And he gave teachers the address to a website that he and his wife, Carla Abshire, created to show off the dogs — www.misterhobbes.com. The children have computers at the Coca-Cola-sponsored school and Giles hopes they can access the site.

Just in case they don't have the proper access, he plans to make prints of some other Hobbes and Andi photos and mail them to the school.
