Family is focus: Andruw and Nicole Jones' Duluth home
Couple's sense of fun is evident in grand Sugarloaf mansion

The ceiling in the entry of Andruw and Nicole Jones' home soars to the heavens — tall enough, it seems, to accommodate a towering pop fly. The 25,000 square-foot, 9-bedroom Sugarloaf Country Club manse features twin basements in the main and guest wings, custom murals, an indoor batting cage and a slew of unique decorator touches.

Like the dining room table that's suspended from the ceiling.

Or the clear light-up piano.

Or the giant lion's-head mantle encasing one of the fireplaces.

But by far the best part of a visit to the Jones' home is meeting their little boy, Druw, an adorable combination of his mother's gregarious personality and his father's athletic prowess.

"I hit the ball really hard!" he announced recently, asked if he's a baseball player like his dad. "It flew up into the bushes!"

Then again, being 3, he's not opposed to whacking on the bannister with a miniature baseball bat.

"Come on, little one," his father said, firm but gentle. "Let's go play."

While Jones settled into a comfy leather seat to watch television with Druw perched on his lap, the lady of the house took us on a tour.

We started in the guest wing, which features a music room where the custom-built piano — which took 13 months to complete — is housed. Paintings of performers like Bob Marley, Louis Armstrong, Madonna and Whitney Houston line the walls. Nicole Jones, who graduated from Pebblebook High School, where she was active in the vocal program, dreams of meeting Houston some day.

The guest wing features four master-sized bedrooms and a spacious kitchen with a dining area leading to a screened-in porch.

Upstairs, a golden-hued catwalk leads to the main house through a bedroom that's been converted into a sitting area. Druw's island-themed bedroom, featuring custom murals that honor his father's native island nation of Curacao, is also upstairs, as is his sister's. Nine-year-old Madison spends a lot of time with her dad, stepmom and beloved little brother. Her fairy-themed room is near Druw's, and his round, gold-toned baby crib now houses her stuffed animals.

Downstairs, the kitchen boasts professional-grade appliances and cherry cabinetry. The kitchen opens into a large family room, the heart of the Jones' home.

"We went through a few couches before we found the right one," Nicole Jones says. "We joke that it's brought us closer together because we spend all our time laying on it."

The foyer in the main house features two-story ceilings and custom ironwork on the doors and up the stairs. (Look closely and you'll spot the swirly J's hidden in the scrolls and elsewhere in the home's decorative accents.) The master bedroom features one of many fireplaces in the home.

"Andruw is an island boy, but he is very good at making fires," Nicole Jones says. She and her husband are serving as celebrity ambassadors for an upcoming event benefiting Jaden's Ladder, a nonprofit organization that helps survivors of domestic violence. "The Fairway Affair: the Dream Takes Flight, " is a Nov. 10-11 series of events including a gala and rounds of golf with various sports stars, including Braves players Brian McCann, Chipper Jones, Tim Hudson and John Smoltz. (For more info: www.jadensladder.org.)

"I play golf, but I'm not that good," Andruw Jones says modestly. "I just go out there and have fun."

The Jones' home, on about two acres, overlooks part of the Sugarloaf course. Despite the home's size and grandeur, Nicole Jones wants visitors to feel at home.

"I wanted comfort," she said. "I didn't want people to feel like they couldn't sit down."

HOUSE HIGHLIGHTS

• The home's footprint actually covers two lots, and an enclosed "catwalk" connects the main house and the guest wing.

• The basement of the guest wing features a batting cage, indoor basketball court and tons of sports memorabilia, including Jones' framed jerseys and baseball bats signed by just about everyone he has ever played with.

• The basement of the main house features a fitness room with sauna and whirlpool, video arcade games and yes, more sports memorabilia, including a signed pair of boxer Muhammad Ali's trunks.

MORE ABOUT THE BENEFIT:

He's a celebrated sports star, and she's the sweet and friendly face at all sorts of fab events around town.

But Andruw and Nicole Jones get serious for a minute when they talk about a cause near and dear to their hearts. They are serving as celebrity ambassadors for an upcoming gala and golf tournament benefiting Jaden's Ladder. The organization helps survivors of domestic violence.

"It's about respecting women," Andruw Jones said. "This will help both kids and women."

Added Nicole Jones: "We're helping people who are trying to put tragedy behind them and start a new life."

The gala, at a private Buckhead estate, is from 6 p.m. to midnight Nov. 10. The tournament, where golfers get a chance to hit the links with celeb partners, is the next morning at Heritage Golf Course in Tucker. Registration starts at 8 a.m.

The Joneses have rounded up a slew of famous faces to join in, including Brian McCann, Chipper Jones, David Ortiz, Tim Hudson, John Smoltz, Coach Larry Brown, Tom Glavine, Jacob Brumfield, Charles Oakley and Alex Rodriguez.

"Pretty much everyone we've asked has said yes," Nicole Jones said. "I think this year's going to be our best yet."

The event will be the third annual for Jaden's Ladder, and the fundraising goal is $500,000.

Tickets are $250 for the gala, and $650 for an individual round of golf (which includes two tickets to the gala). For tickets and information see www.jadensladder.org.
