Delta Air Lines passengers will soon be able to use in-flight Wi-Fi service on domestic flights.

Atlanta-based Delta announced Tuesday it is adding broadband Wi-Fi access on its domestic fleet, allowing passengers with Wi-Fi enabled laptops and other devices to access the Internet and send and receive e-mail, texts and instant messages.

The service will cost $9.95 on flights three hours or shorter and $12.95 on flights longer than three hours. Internet phone call capability will be blocked on the service, but adult content will not.

The airline is working with Itasca, Ill.-based Aircell to install the network on more than 330 planes. MD88/90s will be the first planes to get the service, starting as early as September.

"You will see this service available in Atlanta very soon," Delta spokesman Kent Landers said.

Delta expects to get the system installed in 75 planes by the end of this year, and in the remainder of Delta's domestic fleet, including Boeing 737, 757 and 767-300 planes, by next summer. The service will not be available on Delta Connection flights and will be limited to North America because Aircell's system relies on ground towers.

"Given our interest by our customers in this service, we will continue to explore connectivity offerings for international," Landers said.

Delta's move follows announcements by other airlines adding in-flight Wi-Fi through Aircell, including American Airlines and Virgin America. JetBlue Airways has launched a test of in-flight connectivity with e-mail and instant messaging.

If Delta's proposed merger with Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest Airlines is approved by regulators and shareholders, "we hope to ultimately expand that to include the Northwest mainline fleet in the U.S. as well," Landers said.
