Coke subsidiary to pay $7.6M for water violations

A Coca-Cola Co. subsidiary has agreed to pay $7.59 million to a California city for alleged wastewater violations.

The issue stems from an AMCAN Beverages plant in American Canyon, Calif., near San Francisco.

According to the city of American Canyon, AMCAN Beverages, owned by Atlanta-based Coca-Cola, was supposed to treat wastewater at its plant before discharging it into the city’s treatment system. However, city tests in 2007 showed high concentrations of contaminants.

A subsequent investigation by AMCAN found that violations had taken place. The company began discussions to correct the problems and settle the issue.

“We’ve taken rapid steps to ensure our operations comply with applicable law,” said Coca-Cola spokesman Ray Crockett.

City officials credited Coca-Cola with quickly addressing the problem.

“AMCAN, a subsidiary of the Coca-Cola Co., acted proactively to report and correct conditions that led to the alleged permit violations and has responsibly reimbursed the city for its cost,” said William Ross, a lawyer for the city, in a press statement.

Coca-Cola bought the plant in 2002 from a Japanese company. It makes drinks for the Powerade, Minute Maid, Gold Peak and Nestea brands.
