Coca-Cola and the U.S. Agency for International Development this week announced a joint investment of $12.7 million to create clean-water projects in sub-Saharan Africa.

The money will be spent through the global partnership between Atlanta-based Coca-Cola and USAID, called the Water and Development Alliance. The group focuses on watershed management, water supply and sanitation, hygiene promotion, and productive water use.

With the new spending, USAID and Coca-Cola have committed a total of $28.1 million since 2005 for water projects in 22 countries. Coca-Cola has made water usage a focus of its environmental plan.

Coca-Cola CEO Muhtar Kent told the AJC this year that, for every goal scored during the World Cup, the company would donate money for rainwater harvesting in African villages.
