AT&T plans to eliminate 250 management positions in its wireline call center operation, but it's not certain how many employees in Georgia will be affected.

Hundreds of employees are being asked if they are willing to accept a severance package to leave willingly. If not enough employees are enticed to take the offer, the company will turn to layoffs.

While the reduction in staff is part of a nationwide move, it is likely to have an impact on AT&T's Georgia workforce. The company had 21,700 employees statewide as of the third quarter last year.

AT&T did not say how many work in wireline call centers in the state because it does not break out staffing by departments.

Company spokesperson Emily Edmonds said the move to trim staff was "necessitated by changes in customer behavior, including increasing use of technology to choose convenient self-service options rather than calling our centers, and by the continued decline in our wireline business."

Edmonds added, "We hope that many if not all of the eliminated positions will be met by employees who take a voluntary offer to leave the business."
