AT&T, Georgia workers reach contract deal
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
AT&T has reached a tentative agreement with its union workers in the Southeast region, which includes Georgia, the company said today.
The agreement is for workers for the Dallas-based telecommunication giant's landline division, the company said. It covers about 30,000 Communications Workers of America employees in Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Carolina, and Tennessee.
AT&T's fast-growing wireless unit, AT&T Mobility, is based in Atlanta.
The agreement will be sent to the CWA southeast district's membership for a vote, the company said.
The previous contract expired in August, but the landline telephone workers remained on the job under the old contract as negotiations continued.
The workers had threatened to strike because, among other reasons, they said AT&T is asking them to shoulder a greater percentage of medical expenses in the new contract.
