AT&T-enabled smart pill bottles now available
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Smart pill bottles that glow and beep when it’s time to take medicine are now available for $10 apiece on Amazon.com, AT&T's Atlanta-based wireless division announced Tuesday.
AT&T's wireless system gives the bottles' caps their smarts. The company is working to wire as many consumer gadgets as possible as the market for cell phones becomes saturated.
Vitality GlowCaps, of Cambridge, Mass., makes the bottle caps, which the company eventually plans to offer for free through pharmacies.
Customers will pay $15 monthly to connect to AT&T -- although the billing will be handled by Vitality.
The bottle caps use light, then sound to alert pill takers. Calls or text messages can follow if the bottle isn't opened.
Glen Lurie, president of AT&T's emerging devices division, said the caps deliver "a reliable means to establish and maintain a prescription routine. This solution is simple, easy to use, and long overdue."
