Braves place Garret Anderson on disabled list

Cincinnati — The Braves placed left fielder Garret Anderson on the 15-day disabled list Friday and recalled outfielder Brandon Jones from Class AAA Gwinnett.
Jones was expected to arrive before the 7:05 p.m. series opener against the Reds in Cincinnati.
Anderson had not played since straining his left quadriceps during Sunday’s game at Pittsburgh, and his DL assignment is retroactive to March 20. The Braves had hoped he would feel better after their off-day Thursday and could avoid going on the DL.
Anderson, 36, said he felt the muscle tighten when he scored from second base on Jeff Francoeur’s single in the first inning Sunday. Anderson had doubled with two out in the inning.
The former Los Angeles Angels standout signed as a free agent during the second week of spring training, and missed much of the Grapefruit League schedule after pulling his right calf muscle.
He missed four regular-season starts after tweaking the calf April 8 before a game in Philadelphia.
This is not what the Braves had in mind when they signed Anderson and penciled him in as their primary left fielder. Instead, Matt Diaz has gotten the majority of the playing time.
Anderson is 5-for-25 (.200) with three doubles and no RBIs in 10 games, including 0-for-4 as a pinch-hitter.
Jones hit .308 with four doubles, eight RBIs and a .393 on-base percentage in 14 games for Gwinnett.
