Sloppy defense costs Jurrjens, BravesGiants take advantage of mistakes

San Francisco — The cool Bay Area weather felt refreshing coming from the sultry summer of Atlanta, and the Braves had their hottest starting pitcher going against the worst home team in baseball Monday night.
Didn't matter.

Sloppy defense and missed scored opportunities were too much for Jair Jurrjens and the reeling Braves to overcome in a 4-2 loss against the San Francisco Giants in a series opener at AT&T Park.
The Giants capitalized on mistakes by middle infielders Kelly Johnson and Yunel Escobar and built a 4-1 lead through six innings, and the Braves left 10 runners on base.
It was the eighth loss in 10 games for the Braves, and snapped a four-game road winning streak for Jurrjens (10-7). He was charged with four runs (three earned) and nine hits with three walks in six innings.
The rookie right-hander had a 0.30 ERA during his road winning streak, and truth be told he pitched far better Monday than the box score indicated.
"He kept us in the game, like he's done all year long," said McCann, who returned to the lineup after a one-week absence for a concussion. "He's probably been our most consistent player all season."
Giants starter Matt Cain (7-9) limited the Braves to one run in 6 2/3 innings despite five walks and five hits.
The Braves failed to take advantage when:
• With two runners on and none out in the fourth inning, Omar Infante flied out and Johnson grounded out.
• After a Jeff Francoeur leadoff walk in the fifth, the Braves didn’t so much as advance the runner to second base.
• With the bases loaded in the seventh, Brian McCann popped out to the shortstop.
We're just not hitting and not putting up runs, that's the bottom line," said McCann, adding that he felt good but pitches seemed harder than usual after his break. "I came up in a big situation and didn't get the job done. I got a pitch to drive and just missed it."
Fielding mistakes by shortstop Escobar and second baseman Johnson led to three of four runs against Jurrjens, though one run went in the books as unearned.
"I don't know what to say about it," said Jurrjens, careful as always to not cast blame, though he did admit, "It's a little frustrating. Things happing during the season. Sometimes you have luck and sometimes you don't.
"Tonight I didn't have luck, and we lost the game."
Aaron Rowand's one-out RBI single in the third was the third hit of the inning and drove in the game’s first run. Jack Bowker followed with a potential double-play grounder to Escobar, who dropped it as he went to throw to second.
He had to settle for one out, and a runner scored from third for a 2-0 lead.
The Giants added a run in the fourth inning after Randy Winn's two-out grounder skipped off Johnson's, allowing Cain to reach second.
Ivan Ochoa then hit a sharp grounder up the middle that Johnson dove for, but the ball skipped off the palm of his glove and Ochoa had an RBI single.
After Braves newcomer Casey Kotchman tripled in the sixth and scored on Infante's single to cut the lead to 3-1, the Giants answered in the bottom of the inning after another defensive gaffe.
Steve Holm singled and scored on Winn's double to the left-field corner. A good relay throw by Escobar might have reached the plate well before Holm, but Escobar dropped the throw from left fielder Gregor Blanco and had no play.
The Giants scored twice as many runs (four) than they had scored while Cain was in during any of his prior seven starts. The epitome of no run support, he was 2-4 despite a 2.44 ERA in that previous stretch.
The Braves got their second run in the eighth inning after Infante doubled, advanced on a Johnson single and came home on Francoeur's groundout.
