All-Star update

Chipper Jones had a 250,000-vote lead on Mets' David Wright in the most-recent All-Star voting, released Wednesday. Brian McCann is trailing the Cubs' Geovany Soto for NL catcher.

Draft picks No. 40, 64, 70

The Braves won't pick until 40th overall — in the supplemental round — in Thursday's amateur draft (2 p.m., ESPN2) because they had to give the Mets' their first-round pick as compensation for signing Tom Glavine.

The Braves got the 40th pick as compensation for Kansas City signing reliever Ron Mahay. They have their normal slot at No. 64 in the second round and pick again at 70th in the second round as compensation for not signing last year's second-round pick Josh Fields of the University of Georgia.

"I think there's a good crop of players out there, it's just got to fall right," Braves scouting director Roy Clark said.

As always, the Braves wouldn't mind drafting local talent, and there's plenty to choose from: 10 players from Georgia were ranked in Baseball America's Top 100 high school prospects.

"I always tell people 'best available Georgia guy,' " Clark kidded. "It's a very good year: Georgia and the Southeast. So we'll wait and see. They're like babies to us. We like the babies to stay at home."
