‘Walk the Line’ snubbed for Best Picture
So I averaged 4 out of 5 with my Oscar predictions, which isn’t bad, but also not especially good. But I did call the Leading and Supporting Actress categories, Directing, and would’ve nailed the screenplay categories if I’d put Syriana in the Original Screenplay category. (Stupidity leak, I guess.) Same with the Academy, I guess: Two of the Best Picture nominees (Capote and Good Night, and Good Luck) are quite good, two more (Brokeback Mountain and Munich) are great, and one of them — you guessed it: Crash — is one of the most despicable movies I saw all year.
Usually each year there’s one or two surprises to get excited about. This year, the surprises are all terrible oversights or gross self-importance. The biggest snub’s gotta be Walk the Line not getting a Best Picture nomination, and the biggest surprise might be that Munich and Crash did. My biggest fear as a movie-lover and Oscar-watcher is that Crash could win Best Picture if the buzz on Brokeback Mountain — which, despite my personal struggle with it, is certainly worthy of the award — has peaked.
“It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from Hustle & Flow being one of three Best Song nominees has me hoping we’ll get to see Terrence Howard’s DJay and Taraji P. Henson’s Shug perform it live during the telecast. (Hopefully the song will win, too. It’s not only a great song, but you buy into the movie because of its on-screen creation.)
So those are my initial impressions. Good work on all the categories, but again — mostly quite predictable. Hopefully the real surprises will come on Oscar night.

Was great to see Amy Adams and Terrence Howard get nominations for great performances. I must be out of the loop, but I don’t get all of the newfound love for Crash. There were many movies that were better last year. I also think Eric Bana was overlooked. He was the core of Munich and gave a great performance. Also when was the last time that the directing and best picture nominees lined up perfectly?By mike

I can’t recall when directing and best picture lined up myself. I really despise those old-line liberals of the Academy for thinking “Crash” is an anti-racisim movie — you know that’s why it’s nominated. It’s just liberal racism.By O

Crash is rewarded for the message. Sad but true. I thought Crash wasn’t very good either (the first time I saw it). I think it’s OK, after seeing it again (T. Howard was great). Although, it doesn’t deserve the nomination it received it’s still an OK to good movie. I haven’t seen Munich and everyone I know who has either loves it or hates it. As for Walk The Line … c’mon you didn’t see that coming?By Cindy

The answer is: 1981. Ironically Steven Spielberg was among the nominees that year as well, with Raiders of the Lost Ark. Thank you imdb and their random trivia.
