I have little doubt that Brokeback Mountain will clean up in these awards. The critical acclaim is overwhelming and will be reflected in the awards. I can’t help but wonder if the movie is really that good (as a film) or if the topic is driving some of the acclaim (homosexual love story). By all accounts, it has been a box office bust that has been shielded by limited release. If the movie was really that good, wouldn’t people be going to see it? Anyway, the comments should be very interesting.

It most certainly has NOT been a box office bust! It has been selling out theaters that it is playing in. Last weekend the number one movie was Hostel(?) which grossed about $ 9,000 a screen, Brokeback Mountain grossed about $11,000 a screen.Yes, it may be because it is not playing on as many screens, but I tried to see it three different times and was unsuccessful due to it selling out. Box office bust??? I think not!

I don’t dispute the numbers that Angie quotes. Brokeback Mountain did do phenomenal on a per screen basis. The movie has been released for 6 weeks and has grossed a little more than $32 million. That is not setting the box office on fire. The cause of that may be the limited release or the cause of the limited release may be the lack of overall interest in the movie. I don’t know, but it certainly is not a cash cow at the box office. Source: http://movies.yahoo.com/mv/boxoffice/weekend
