‘Brokeback’ back to Jan. 13 for Dayton
Zack’s sick, so I’m filling in to update for him…
Turns out Brokeback Mountain will not be opening in Dayton on Jan. 6, it has once again been pushed to Jan. 13 for the Neon.
It will still open in Columbus Dec. 30 at the Drexel Gateway.
Jonathan says. “After BROKEBACK opened in 200 additional markets last week, numbers were quite mediocre. Focus, the film’s distributor, has gone back to its original strategy for smaller markets (distributors consider us quite small in terms of box office). Seems that even though there are pockets of people eagerly awaiting the film, it’s still not a blockbuster…and they believe that word-of-mouth and more aclaim will be better for Dayton.”
Sigh, I guess Daytonians will just have to venture to Columbus or wait patiently.

I don’t think anyone was expecting a blockbuster in Brokeback Mountain. Modest box office should be considered a success for this film. And if you’re driving to Columbus to see, head east not north.By Bryan

Just checked boxofficemojo.com. Monday’s per-screen average for Brokeback was just under $4,800. That is extraordinarily good business. Maybe not so mediocre after all.By Jonathan McNeal

I wish Focus had waited until they saw Monday’s grosses…even at THE NEON, we more than doubled Saturday’s and Sunday’s numbers on Monday. That said, studios base almost all of their decisions on Saturday and Sunday grosses…and they were not great. They were down 23% from the previous weekend. That said, we are at the studio’s mercy. The distributor told me point blank that Dayton doesn’t have a track record for supporting arthouse films. Even so, I would like to open BROKEBACK as soon as possible. With only 2 weeks to go, I’ll be doing my best to do some grassroots marketing. More than anyone, I’d love to prove the distributor wrong…By Joanie

Box office is often not an indicator of a good film. Some really awful movies have grossed big amounts. I am a fan of Ag Lee and Brokeback sounds like a great movie and I am looking forward to seeing it.
