State board of ed names interim superintendent

The State Board of Education of Ohio on Tuesday appointed Stan W. Heffner as interim superintendent of public instruction. The full board voted to confirm the nomination made on March 29 by the board’s executive committee.

“I am pleased to announce the confirmation of Stan Heffner to lead the Ohio Department of Education as we move forward to provide the best educational opportunities for Ohio students,” Board President Debe Terhar said in a news release. “His academic background, educational work experience and leadership ability is the right combination to provide guidance and continuity to the Department during this transition.

Heffner, who joined the department in 2004 as associate superintendent, began his career teaching in South Dakota where he became the state’s youngest high school principal. He later served as that state’s deputy secretary of education and cultural affairs.

In Ohio, he served on the local school district level since the mid-1980s, including 15 years as superintendent of the Madison Local School District in Lake County.

Heffner completed doctoral course work at the University of Idaho after receiving his master’s degree in school administration and his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Northern State University in South Dakota, according to ODE.

The search process for a permanent superintendent is underway and will include advertising in national education periodicals.

Resumes and letters of interest should be sent to the attention of Mr. J.C. Benton, Director of Board Relations at the Ohio Department of Education, 25 S. Front St. Columbus, Ohio 43215 or via e-mail, SBOE@ode.state.oh.us.
