DPS school board accepting applications for seat
The Dayton Board of Education will accept applications through Jan. 7 for an appointment to fill the unexpired term of Jeffrey J. Mims, Jr., who was elected to the state school board.
Mims, the board’s president, will resign from the board Friday. He was elected Nov. 2 to represent the 3rd District, which covers all of Montgomery, Butler and Miami counties and the southeast corner of Darke County. The 19-member state board creates policy and makes recommendations for K-12 education in Ohio.
By law, the Dayton school board must appoint someone to fill Mims’ seat no later than Jan. 30.
“We’re hoping to have a good pool from which to select someone,” board member Yvonne Isaacs said Tuesday.
To be eligible, applicants must be registered to vote and reside in the district.
Those wishing to be considered for the appointment must submit an application and three letters of recommendation. They also must submit a letter of interest describing why they want to be considered for the position, their related experience and qualifications and their opinions on important issues facing the district.
Application packets are available online on the district’s website at www.dps.k12.oh.us and at the DPS administration building, 115 S. Ludlow St. They can be picked up or dropped off at the front desk between 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. They also may be mailed to the Dayton Board of Education, Attention: Ms. Cherisse Kidd, 115 S. Ludlow St., Dayton, OH 45402-1812 or faxed to (937) 542-3152.
In related news, board member Stacy Thompson appears poised to become the next president. The board will vote on the nominating committee’s recommendation on Jan. 4.
“I’m excited and certainly humbled by it,” said Thompson, vice president for community development with KeyBank. The 1983 Meadowdale High School graduate was appointed to fill a vacancy on the board in June 2006, then elected in November 2007 to fill the remainder of that term. She was elected to her first full term last year.
Mims and Isaacs, who are on the nominating committee, made the announcement Tuesday.
A public reception for Mims will be at 4:30 p.m. on Jan. 4, in the school board’s community meeting room at Fourth and Ludlow streets.
Mims was appointed to the board in 2007 to fill the unexpired term of Clayton Luckie, who was elected state representative. Mims was elected to the four-year term that November.
He had spent his 34-year career in service to the Dayton school district, where he was a teacher, teachers union president, an administrator and a district lobbyist. He retired in 2007 as director of legislative affairs, contract compliance, and community relations.
Mims counts among his proudest accomplishments the 2008 passage of the district’s first operating levy in 16 years; the 2008 hiring of interim Superintendent Kurt Stanic and Superintendent Lori Ward earlier this year; and seeing all of the high schools improve in every subject area on the Ohio Graduation Test the last two years.
“It’s been a rewarding challenge,” he said.
