Fordham: Education markets don’t always work
A new book out written by a trio from the Thomas B. Fordham Foundation about the group’s experience with market-based school reform in Dayton includes some surprising takeaways from a group that has been a national force supporting charter schools and vouchers.

Training needed to help win government contracts
Education is key to helping local businesses win more of the $21 billion in annual contracts Wright Patterson Air Force Base awards, a study commissioned by Congressman Steve Austria, R-Beavercreek, found.
The 31 member blue ribbon commission tasked with finding ways area companies can better compete for Air Force contracts found that access to information and a better understanding of the application process are needed for businesses to have a chance at winning government jobs. The studies found local universities could help train area businesses to “prepare quality competitive” proposals for government contracts.
Science, technology, engineering and mathematics education, known locally as STEM, is also essential to develop a workforce to grow the local defense contracting market.
