Obama’s “in your face” move in California

(Obama works the crowd in LA Saturday)
Maybe Latino women voters, who make up a huge chunk of California’s Deomcratic constituency, didn’t pay enough notice last week when Barack Obama said student aid should be available to the children of illegal immigrants.
So Saturday he made his point again a bit more vividly.
Obama visited LA’s Garfield High School — the setting for the famous movie “Stand And Deliver” in which inspiring teacher Jamie Escalante pushes Latino kids to test success in math — and delivered an even more pointed critique of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s college aid veto.
“Instead of driving thousands of children who were on the right path into the shadows, we need to give those who play by the rules the opportunity to succeed,” the LA Times reported he said in his speech.

If we really wanted to live up to our history of protecting children from the bad judgements of parents we’d give them vouchers or the ability to go to a better school district. What a horrible school district to move into… ;)By joe mamma

oldprof, you got that right. Many taxpayers are tired of do-gooders binge spending their dollars instead of taking care of “business” like basics and infrastructure. At least one conspiracy book says this is by design. Failures of economic, social, cultural, government, and educational systems resulting in chaos and anarchy can cause some desired power and wealth shifts. It seems everything is working according to plan. Mexico’s system has failed its people and the dominos are falling northward. Of course, we also have some issues. Someone in my family has already emigrated north to Canada. Pretty soon we will all be at the North Pole with Santa and the elves expecting them to take care of us.By Oldprof

We’ve had a history in this nation of trying to protect children from the bad judgments and misfortunes of their parents. Obama’s proposal seems to be a continuation of that value—the children did not decide to become illegal immigrants, their parents did. Of course, even if Obama gets to the White House, the odds of our citizenry wanting to support more education are slim—our voters don’t even fully support children in their own neighborhoods.
