The Dayton edition of Sports Illustrated

This week’s Sports Illustrated prominently features two local kids.

Uber Columnist Rick Reilly writes about legless Colonel White football player Bobby Martin. (Note: to read the story online you must have a subscription to the magazine.)

Reilly skewers the Cincinnati officials who preposterously refused to let Martin play because he wasn’t wearing the required shoes and leg pads. Sheesh.

Also, if you haven’t noticed, former Chaminade-Julienne High School superstar Javon Ringer, is emerging as a breakout star for Michigan State. He’s featured in three photos, including one of the feature shots that leads off the magazine each week on the opening pages.

Ringer has four touchdowns and last week ran for almost 200 yards. He’s a big reason why Michigan State is a surprising 4-0 and a sudden contender for the Big Ten Title. That’s pretty good considering they don’t even have his photo up on his player page at the Michigan State football website!

Whatever the legal reasons the refs wouldn’t let the kid play, they should have just been honest and said, “we’re afraid there might be legal issues.” This shoes and leg pads business just serves to make the kid feel bad about himself.

The referees in Cincinnati received no advance warning about the kid from Colnel White. The kid was not seen in the pregame and I’m not sure he even was out there before the game. Suddenly it is in the first half and you see a kid without legs come out onto the field and try to make a play on a punt. Without any offical notice and in today’s litigious society I would err on the side of caution if I was a referee. The administration at Colnel White should have given the referees advance notcie about the kid. No one from the Cincinnati school let the refs know either. I do not blame the referees for their decision.I blame the athletic directors at both schools. What are AD’s doing that they are too busy to communicate with referees? Even the Ohio Athletic Association was unaware of the kid.
