About me
I grew up in Princeton, N.J., the son of two educators, attending public school until eighth grade, then switching to a Catholic high school. I came to Ohio to attend the University of Dayton in 1986 and the state has been my home since. I worked at small and medium-sized newspapers in Preble, Miami and Clark counties before joining the Dayton Daily News in 1998.
I’ve covered education since I started with the Springfield (Ohio) News-Sun in 1996. Mark Fisher, who technically covers higher education, is the other half of our education team at the Dayton Daily News, and we collaborate frequently. Much of my reporting has been focused on the hot local issues of school choice, urban school reform and standardized testing.
I am just back on the job after spending eight months as the Knight-Wallace journalism fellow in education at the University of Michigan. Read more about this wonderful program for mid-career journalists here.
My wife is a high school guidance counselor. I have three daughters, the oldest of whom is in first grade.
