KVUE picks new co-anchor for morning newscasts

Management at KVUE didn’t have to look far to fill an opening on the station’s morning news team.

Weekend sports anchor Bryan Mays has slid into the spot vacated earlier this year by Olga Campos, co-anchoring the station’s “Daybreak” and “Midday” newscasts alongside Melissa Gale.

“When Bryan filled in on the ‘Daybreak’ anchor desk, he created a spark that was felt not only on the air, but behind the scenes as well, working closely with the producers to improve the quality of the editorial aspect of the newscast,” said Frank Volpicella, KVUE’s executive news director. “I’m confident that along with Melissa Gale and Albert Ramon, Bryan will build on the success they’ve established, and help produce a newscast that the viewers of Central Texas will want to see.”

While Austin viewers know Mays for his sports coverage, Volpicella points out that Mays has covered hard news in previous jobs. He arrived at KVUE in 2004 after gigs in San Antonio and Lufkin.

“He is a fine journalist, an effective communicator, and a valued member of the team,” Volpicella said.

Sports reporter Matt Mitchell will fill Mays’ spot on the weekend newscasts, Volpicella said, and the station is actively searching for Mitchell’s replacement.

The moves at KVUE were set in motion when Campos departed in late July after spending 16 years at the city’s No. 1-rated TV station. She’s now working for Austin philanthropist Milton Verret.

Love Melissa! She is smart, sincere, pretty and seems like a down to earth gal who I could see as a friend and neighbor. Mays is a good fit for the morning and brings added value to the morning news. So far they seem to click well together! Good Job KVUE, my favourite news station. Been watching for 10 years.

Mays seems like a good fit. Glad that "Corney" Quita did NOT get the job. She is NOT a news person, maybe she should just stick to reviewing household products and gadgets. By the way, since when did reviewing "household" products start passing as legitimate news? AND WOULD SOMEONE, ANY ONE, TELL MELISSA TO DO SOMETHING WITH THAT HAIR!

Oh, so the Statesman will accept comments for this controversial article, but we can't get a word in on the burning story about the nut case at aggie-land threatening to cut anyone up who tried to take his keys. Wow, can you imagine how the nut cases (moi included) who regularly leave comments would have a field day with the crazy aggie?

Melissa Gale is what makes that morning newscast.....its Olga that was destroying it and I'm glad she's gone.....Brian is a HUGE improvement over Olga. Olga had the 'I'm better than everyone else persona' and it had no place in news.
