KBVO to air 22 high school football games this season

Austin TV station KBVO is doubling the number of Central Texas high school football games it will broadcast this season.

The MyNetworkTV affiliate plans to air 22 matchups, 11 live in high definition Thursdays at 7 p.m. and 11 Friday night games that will be taped for broadcast Saturdays at 7 p.m.

“This is the essence of our communities, Central Texas vs. Central Texas,” said Eric Lassberg, president and general manager for KBVO, KNVA and KXAN. “I think we’ve done a great job picking games people will want to see.”

Thursday games will also be streamed live on kxan.com, Lassberg said, while Friday night action can be seen online each Saturday.

“We understand Saturday night is a big college football night,” said KXAN sports director Roger Wallace, “but we know DVRs will be humming for sure.”

Area coaches and athletic directors said the televised matchups give students — and their schools — great exposure.

“Football is so much more than a game. It’s an event,” said Jim Loerwald, athletic director for the Round Rock school district. “This is amazing for these schools.”

“Being on TV gets people excited,” said Austin school district athletic director Tommy Cox. “This is an opportunity to showcase our kids. It’s a win-win deal for everybody.”

KBVO is on Channel 7 on both AT&T U-verse and Time Warner Cable. Over the air, it can be found on channels 14 and 51.
