Report: TV stations producing more local news

U.S. TV stations affiliated with the Big 4 networks — ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC — produced an average of 5.36 hours of local news each weekday in 2010, up a full hour from just three years ago.

A report for the Radio Television Digital News Association produced by Hofstra University’s Bob Papper shows TV stations in markets 26-100 added the most newscasts in 2010. Austin ranks 44th in market size, up from 48 during the 2009-2010 TV season.

Austin stations have added a pair of newscasts in recent weeks, with KEYE rolling out a two-hour morning show that runs from 5 to 7 a.m., and KXAN starting its morning news 30 minutes earlier at 4:30 a.m.

Other newscasts added in the last year or so include 4:30 a.m. shows on KTBC and KVUE.

Fox-owned KTBC produces the most local news — 7.5 hours — each weekday, including a 5.5-hour morning show.

KVUE and KXAN are next, with around five hours of news, followed by KEYE with four hours. KXAN also produces a 30-minute 9 p.m. newscast for sister station KNVA, Austin’s CW affiliate.

Among Spanish-language broadcasters, KEYE’s Telemundo Austin and Univision’s KAKW each produce an hour of news.
